I have a feeling it may have had to do something with a lot of the Apple talent that was in the company. I wouldn't be surprised to see Tony end up either at Google in a much different capacity, or out on his own again shortly. This can be said for others as well. We shall see. This is a pretty big carrot they dangled.

So Consumer Reports is a good source if they say anything bad about any company except for Apple. When they criticize anything Apple they aren't a reliable source and don't know what they are talking about? At least that's the impression I've gotten here in the past. :D

Consistency is not a strong attribute for many on here.

Limits the use of user info. Doesn't say disallows the use. I don't trust this move. Being a nest owner, I will be keeping my eyes open and certainly not purchasing any more of their products.

You better believe Nest will integrate with Google Now beautifully if people opt in to linking it with their Google account.

If you link Nest to your Google account, you'll probably be able to say things like, "OK, Google, what's the temperature inside my home right now?" and "OK, Google, turn the thermostat at home up to 70 when the temperature outside goes below 20" from anywhere you happen to be in the world.

Tin foil hat or not, most people would have to admit that being able to control the thermostat in your home with your voice from halfway around the world is pretty amazing. Google is likely going to market the heck out of Nest and tout it as having simple, voice-controlled interaction and the masses are going to love it.

3.2 billion for a company that makes smoke detectors and thermostats? what's the worth of Honeywells thermostat and smoke detector division then? 300 billion?

Don't get me wrong, I have a Nest and it's great but 3 billion?:eek::eek::eek:

As a Nest owner I am unhappy about this. Because I know that Google wouldn't pay this much if they didn't have some rather sinister plans. But then again, I have to say that Nest probably let Google look inside of it's product development pipeline. Did anyone know the Protect was coming out before Nest announced it...?

Just yesterday, when I first read about the Nest fire-alarm I thought that Apple should buy them and go seriously into home-automation. Well ...

That's my first thought: home automation.

My guess is that Nest told their investors about future plans, and Google decided it was easier to buy their expertise than start from scratch.

(Similar to the way Apple bought up a bunch of mapping, semiconductor and personal assistant companies last year.)

Nest is not a Google product, it doesn't have 10 buttons and 50 settings. :D

I think this sentiment has been over played with Apple products.

I can't stand the remote for my Apple TV. Which moron designed that?

It looks cool but doesn't function worth a crap! Lot of buttons where omitted for the sake of looking clean.

In fact I just threw it out in the garbage last week!

So the whole acquisition is about giving Nest voice control?

Nope, the whole acquisition is about Google getting as much data as possible. And they will do that; but they'll give the end-user some nice benefits in exchange for the data they're collecting. Google has a long, long history of doing this.

Now Nest will use Android. You'll be able to root it, add widgets, see the weather, time and date, it'll have NFC, it'll have an 18MP camera that also shoots 4K video, be 3x bigger, it will use Google voice, it will have a stylus, have multitasking, split windows and it will be able to make calls.
Has always run Android, and is powered by an ARM CortexA8

This is much better than Nest. Thermostat, live weather, plays music. This is who Apple should buy

I'm not sure this product is "much better" than Nest (a thermostat that plays music?), but it is another approach to home automation. We're only starting to see the possibilities, which is why Google was so desperate to buy in.

i don't understand how these companies, worth billions at purchase, would ever profitable by creating very expensive gadgets supposed to replace cheap products

one can find a thermostat for less than $50 and a smoke detector for $10

the potential value of geek customers would never match this amount

You've just succinctly described the most common criticism of Apple's products. Well done!

My bad, the customer reviews, not CR directly.

Yay? Android on everything is getting old. Android on your refrigerator, your toilet, your sink, now your lightbulbs can be controlled with your phone. Is anybody tired of this yet?
