"Unlimited" has conditions, read the fine print:

If your photos are over 16 MP or video over 1080p, you dip into your limited free storage of 15 GB. It will also compress your images/video into what Google defines as "High Quality."

Not saying this isn't good, but it's not the second coming either.

Interesting find on the fine print, although I think it's safe to say a huge majority of users don't have above 16MP pictures or 2k/4k video on their phones. And if they do, they still get 15 GB free which is awesome.

Still, this is awesome as it hopefully pressures Apple to do something similar.

Pretty much. I believe they can even use it for advertising.

People didn't bother to read the policy on using the Microsoft #HowOldBot that people were going crazy with recently. It says they can use your picture in any advertising plus sell it to partners.

Facebook has a similar policy. They can use your images for most anything.

No, Facebook can't. They are restricted in how they can use them based on your privacy settings. However, they can use your public photos however they want.

Thank you google for the photo storage. It just makes sense. I'm in major disagreement with Apples new system of pushing everything to iCloud Drive and then making you pay to upgrade the space. I think this is a very anti apple business model as it stops people from using the devices to full potential, and as advertised.

Hopefully Apple has an answer to this.

Nothing is FREE

What is the price for having FREE unlimited photo storage? How will Google make money for giving FREE unlimited photo storage?

Same as every Google privacy policy. They get to index and analyze the contents of all your stuff. They take things like location and time and date data to build a better profile of you. Where you go, what you do, who you're there with, and more. Then they use that data to sell ads.

And they own every photo that's uploaded. Read the smal print.

No comment necessary.

If I had a dollar for every vendor pitch I've seen with an ocean of partner logos that looked just like both of those... it would buy an Edition watch.

Apple is borrowing a very old cliche just as much as Google.

And Apple and it's BUSINESS PARTNERS don't do any of this...
It amazes me that people think Apple is this white fluffy bunny of a business that will protect its consumers privacy and data.

Remember that the reasoning for it is much different. Google analyzes all your photos, uses location data, and more to build a better profile about you, which they can sell to advertisers. Because of this, Google makes money off your photos and can afford to give you unlimited storage at no cost.

Apple doesn't do this so they charge for storage.

Simply two different business models.

Apple has over $150 Billion in reserves. To say they charge for storage because they don't make money selling ads is reaching pretty hard. It would be far more believable if Apple simply said "We charge because we can." If they said something as crazy as "We charge for storage because we don't sell ads", who would actually believe that? Currently we don't know why Apple charges so much. I feel pretty darn confident it ain't the reason you gave.

Apple does the same thing. They tell you so in the privacy policy. Thing is, there's nothing wrong with it. Both companies give you options to opt out. Both companies will still sell the ad space. The ads just won't be targeted.

The only necessary comment, is that you've simply shown that you have apparently never seen a wall of customer icons in a corporate presentation before.

For instance, from a 2011 article about Google Wallet, more than three years before Apple Pay came out:

No, Facebook can't. They are restricted in how they can use them based on your privacy settings. However, they can use your public photos however they want.

They are also limited by the law... No user agreement is above the law...
For instance, it's unlawful to use my photos without citing my name as an author, no agreement can make that legal... Likewise, it's illegal to use my photos in context that were not explicitly enumerated in the licence agreement.

So far, Facebook has not be bothered because they have so far not used photos however they wanted and because US laws are pretty weak when it comes to defend authors. But if they did, they would be opened to lawsuits outside the US (or an European investigation)...
