Whether this service by Google is good or bad is one thing..
But, I'm surprised that Google can "DO" things, and all we hear is Apple is TRYING to do this, that etc.. But, nothing comes out.

Tim Cook might be a profitable CEO. But, he has not delivered ANYTHING yet. All he has done so far is polish what Steve already did.. People might argue that the stock market is rigged (may be it is..), but, this sentiment is exactly reflecting in the stock price. Do a compare of GOOG and APPL stock, and you see that they are the mirror images.. GOOG going up and APPL going down.

At some point Mr. Cook has to explain. He can try talking like Steve, walking like Steve, but he is NO STEVE. This fall is make or break for him/Apple.. Else it is fall for Apple+Tim.

I must be too old, I don't get the need for this service for a lot of people. I have my old CD's ripped and now available to me via iTunes Match, and using Match I was able to upgrade that low bit rate music that I "acquired" back in he day too. I have my iTunes purchases available via Itunes in the Cloud, as well. I don't spend a $100 a year on new music, in fact a quick look at my purchase history shows that in the last calendar year, I've bought 2 complete albums and 7 songs. I can't see paying a hundie +, to listen to new music. I can see that maybe younger people than I would find this convenient, but as someone who is in his 40's I don't get it. I dread I may have just become that "Get off my lawn you young whippersnappers" guy...aka my dad...
"Old" is more of a mentality than an age these days. I just turned 40 myself and I use MOG all the time, happily paying $10 a month to access new music any time I feel like it. That's "new to me" music - not just today's new music. Music I haven't heard. I can't ever imagine being content with only the music I had bought long ago, and we all know buying blindly is for suckers. And I STILL spend hundreds of dollars on CDs and downloads above that. I love music, and I'll take whatever access to it I can get.

I'll just go on record saying this.

Streaming music services aren't for everyone. If it's not for you - don't subscribe.

If it is - you now have at least one more option.

Exactly, I'm sick and tired of people saying "this is so dumb" just because it's not for them, personally I'm not into services like this (Spotify), but I can see how many people find this apps amazing, and yes, this gives people one more option.

Competition is always good.

I'd guess that Google/Samsung/etc doesn't care about that, they might even be happy about it. Why? Because those who pick a streaming service based on whether it has The Beatles or not tend to be old. So, it works perfectly for Samsung's current strategy of calling iOS/iPhones/iPads/etc old.
Surely you pick a music subscription service based on the bands you like, otherwise what are you buying...
I don't think Beatles fan tend to be old, me and most of my school friends are good fans, we're all about 20.
It's one of those bands that like most music fans like right?

I'm willing to bet that iRadio turns out to be a free service that simply removes the 90-second limit with iTunes song previews.

That's sorta the point...I didn't have to purchase AirFoil for Pandora or iTunes, just to stream music to my audio system and shouldn't have to for Spotify either.

Not sure of your setup, but can't you just choose Apple TV (or your compatible device) as the output in the sound settings. Or Option-Click the volume item in the menu bar.

Again, maybe this doesn't apply to you. Works for me with rMBP and Apple TV with Spotify. Not app specific streaming, just all sound output.

Just a quick note on all this fuss about iRadio.

They say Apple raised the offer price to what Pandora offers, now explain me, if Pandora pays that high roalty because it does not require any direct agreement with the record labels, why the hell do people and news sites keep saying Apple is negotiating ?

If Apple pays 12cents/100 songs THERE IS NO NEGOTIATION GOING ON, that is a table price, no argument.

Idiotic the times and times I keep reading this on websites...

Matter of Opinion

what a joke, $120 a year? no thanks
I still dont see why people "buy" digital music, much less "rent" it...
they will just have a new high bandwidth 24bit format soon
and the networks will slow down once again
data plans will explode and everyone gets price gouged, awesome:confused:

PS. I only buy vinyl records...
superior sound, art, and the ability to resell (usually at a profit)

I use spotify and I find the sound quality much superior to vinyl. You know what I hear in between digital songs on a album - nothing, know what I hear on Vinyl - Hisssssss. If you prefer vinyl that is your opinion. I like the convenience of spotify because my music purchases exceeded $120 per year and with Spotify I get anything I want. I am freer to explore new music and not have to worry if I just wasted my money.

Maybe your tastes are too picky?

Pandora just takes some guiding - thumb down anything you don't want on a station, even if you like the song. I have about 10 different stations on Pandora that play almost only music I want because I've taken some time to optimize them.

I use both Pandora and Spotify a lot - Pandora is great if I want minimal intervention, Spotify is great when I'm looking for specific songs or artists or albums.

Curious as to why you use both Spotify and Pandora.. You know that Spotify can do the same thing as Pandora right? Radio plays based on a song or band.. thumbs up the ones you like, thumbs down the ones you dont.. Spotify also saves a playlist of your "Liked" songs which is nice...

Yet when you stop paying Spotify you lose all those 120 dollars you spend a year.

So you're a self proclaimed hipster that doesn't explore new music outside of you're known genre?

Radio on Spotify does not work in most European countries (on the FREE version) on mobile.

Can play whatever I want when I want? Excellent. Meanwhile Apple is still pursuing the horrible Pandora method. Google - young and modern. Apple - old and out of touch.

----------

Looks like a good alternative to Spotify,
but only iRadio will have The Beatles ;)

Excellent, something for the elderly fanbase that they market phones to.

They're not the first people in the market of streaming music, and the people already in it already have better services. Why would anyone swap to this from Spotify, for example?

Well for one - it's less expensive.

Also - I imagine that this service will be integrated into Android - so if you have a phone or tablet that runs Android - there could be advantages over spotify

Lastly - and correct me if I am wrong - can you upload your own personal music to spotify so you can stream any song you want + have your entire music available as well?

Clearly you don't know music. We can't all be beliebers! :p

They are not identical. You are confused. One allows you to pick the songs, one forces you to listen to what they think you will like.

Paid spotify lets you pick songs. Free spotify does not, it just does "stations" like pandora.

Technically not true, depending how you define 'all'. When you stop paying spotify you will be converted back to a free account. You can still stream music on your desktop so yeah all playlists are still there. What you lose is the ability to offline sync the playlist on your desktop and stream/sync to any model device spotify supports.

At the same time, you get 'more' by stopping to pay. Yes, those commercials between tracks.

That's part of my point, people will pick a service based on the music they like.

But, even if you and your friends do, most 20 year olds doesn't listen a lot to The Beatles. And the percentage of 20 year olds who would base their buying decision on whether The Beatles are available or not, is really small.

I don't get it

I don't understand these whole streaming services. I find the sound quality mediocre at best. While most of my collection is vinyl, I am not opposed to digital. I have ~2TB of digital music, mostly lossless and 24 bit ALAC files. I spend over $3M per year in music so cost isn't the issue. It's the quality and the fact that I don;t own the music. If these services shut down then what? I'll still have my LPs and files (which are backed up). For music on the go (car, plane, etc.) I have my Ipod classic.
