I like the concepts, and I like the way things are trending.

I am looking to buy a small TV to mount on the wall of my kitchen. Ideally it has access to YouTube and a web browser built in so I can check out my favourite cooking videos and websites. I also have photos, videos, and music stored on a NAS, and it would be great if I could access all of those too.

Samsung and Sony both make a number of models that look like they'll fit the bill without needing any extra hardware. Of course I could also stick an Apple TV, WD TV Live, Asus O!Play, etc. under there somewhere too.

Dude, just plug in your laptop and pull up your cooking shows, web sites, etc. That's what I do. Unless you really want to mount a TV, a cable box, a google box, and an apple tv on your wall :|

in the end?!? the END?!?

like 2012?

hate to break this to you buddy... unless the world blows up, there's not going to be an "end" to the "technology race."

and in the "meantime"... google will be replaced with some other tech company. because that's the way it works.

gee, i wonder if all these companies know they are aiming at a finish line, at which point all technology will have been discovered, so they don't have to make any more... and they'll declare a WINNER.

seriously man... "in the end"? that's just nonsense.

He means Google will win out over Apple. They are now essentially in the exact same markets.

A few thoughts …

- The search functionality reminds me of the new TiVo swivel search that’s available on the TiVo Premiere

- This is going to put pressure on Apple to do something with the Apple TV

- It’s interesting there was a Hulu symbol in their demo. So far, Hulu has stopped (or at least tried to stop) every TV-centric browser from viewing their content (PS3, Kylo, Boxee, etc). It may be part of their upcoming subscription plan.

- The only way this will succeed is if Google can convince cable/satellite set-top box makers (Scientific Atlanta, Motorola, etc) and TV manufacturers to include it in their products. People don’t want another set-top box.

Good luck with that. Microsoft has tried for years with Media Room. Otherwise, it will be relegated to a niche market just like the Apple TV.

Then there are lots of questions:

- How’s this going to integrate with mobile Android?
- How do you get content from your PC or Mac on Google TV? (DLNA? Their new streaming application acquisition?)
- Who’s building the PVR software? Is it up to the box makers?
- What DRM is supported? (There was a symbol for Amazon Unbox, so one would assume that’s at least supported.)
- Will the UI be the same for all boxes?

SONY and Adobe are on board now.

I don't know if it will be any good, The trend in TV industry is 3D now, is web content on TV really that attractive now? Not sure.

Well, Apple has already ported Safari to Mac, Windows, and iPhone OS. An Apple TV Port would be nice. The only way to do it now is to install Mac OS X 10.4 (yes, that is possible) on Apple TV, then install Safari.

I think that the ideal is that you use a touch based controller (iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, etc.) to control apps on an iPhone Os based AppleTV.

I would like to use my iPad as a couch browsing device, and when i find something to watch, it would play on my big screen with one click!

Thought this was called WebTV.

http://www.webtv.com/pc/

I am personally moving away from applications on my tv, move in favor of content on my tv.

If this is google, apple or netflix (via tivo). What needs to happen is the interface needs to be simple, cheap or free, and it needs to "just work".

Somehow integrating the internet and TV doesn't seem all that revolutionary..

Xperia X10 is the best-selling handset in Japan, and that "when you beat Apple, you're dominating

i'm not sure anyone ELSE is too excited about SONY beating apple IN JAPAN.

hey, i hear they like nintendo there, too.

yes, of course sony beats iphone in japan. duh.

and i'm guessing nokia does pretty good business in scandanavia, too.

I wish you'd answer my question and tell me how its bloated?

What does that even mean anyways?

Its size? You dont like having a 300 mb application?
Its speed? Sure it takes like 2 seconds to switch to different screens sometimes. Is that horrible?

Please tell me intelligent sir.

- For what it does, its a huge application.
- The UI is convoluted - everything I want to do is like walking through quicksand (and now it's ugly too)
- It's painfully slow
- It beachballs
- It simply crashes

And this is on OSX. On Windows, it is unusable.

I shouldn't need a prehistoric application like itunes to work with my idevices. They should be able to do all this stuff over the air automatically.... Oh wait, Google is releasing that now (see previous rumor).

I love Apple, but recently they are arrogant and resting on their laurels. I'll buy and use whatever product is the best, regardless of weather it is Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. Competition benefits me

You know, I'm not sure why so many people want to take issue with the Apple TV. We have a Samsung 63 LED in our living room and use the Apple TV like there is no tomorrow. The thing delivers nice quality pictures, i rarely have problems with it and since getting it my buying of "hard copy" movies has dropped probably 97% versus Digital Copies.

I think the Apple TV is a great little device that just needs more love :D

Then again maybe i'm misreading everyone's statements but it seem like the little white box needs more credit than it gets..

As for Google, yawn, someone said it best, they always introduce cool sounding stuff but does it ever really stick? Me thinks not

Now Apple, Well Apple Just knows how to deliver

At least for us, we love the Apple TV in our home, got 3 of em, living room, bed room and guest room

Cheers! :)

We use Apple TV daily. I have several hundred (250+) tv shows and movies ready to be viewed on demand.

You would think it was a the 70's and 80's if you wanted TV at my house with all the seasons of various shows we have from Apple TV. Sometimes I get 24 half hours shows for $24. Good Deal, expecially when we watch them 1 a day and then wait 6-8 months and watch them again....

While SJ and crew were counting their money Goog was busy sneaking up behind them.

Bye-bye Apple TV (POS) anyway.

Better watch out Apple, I hear that Google is planning to release an OS and laptops this fall.

Would be interesting to see what Apple does with this, as I would love to see an ARM version of the Apple TV essentially running iPhone OS, but using an iPhone or iPad as a touch-screen remote. You'd just bundle it with an iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch depending on your needs, or buy one on its own if you already have a compatible device.

Somehow integrating the internet and TV doesn't seem all that revolutionary..

I just recently installed QuickTime 6 on a Windows NT 4.0 Virtual Machine and the first thing I see when it starts up is all the QuickTime TV stations....

As an Apple stocks holder Im very happy of Google stupidity of announcing everz of their products MONTHS in advance giving Apple enough time to react. But this is not the only thing I like about Google. The other things are for example that most things they do fail, while most things Apple does do not. Compare Googles (much higher) stock price with apple's I think it will soon be reveresed with Apple essentially havong Google stock price and vica versa.

Based on your post, you've got a lot of sack to call anyone stupid.

Apple vs google

This is all really quite simple. Apple just needs to wirelessly port the i-Phone and i-Pad to Apple TV so that you can use your i-Phone or i-Pad as a controller for the games you own and play them on your tv through Apple TV. The only thing that would be even cooler is if Apple started building television sets that could do this. Imagine not being required to purchase a separate gaming system because it was all built in to the television.

You could go to your friend's houses with your phone and you could all sync up to the same game. It's THAT simple. This is where it is all headed. TRUST ME.

Awesome.

All it needs is a tiny keyboard remote.

I don't see this revolutionizing anything yet but it's a good step forward. Recent TVs have some rudimentary functionality like this already.

What about malware?

I wonder how the device will address malware because you know in time, people will start writing scripts for them to specifically target these devices.
