If you're expecting a smooth long term experience, this phone is DOA:

Now, imagine just a minor Qualcomm processor upgrade and the same RAM quantity? That's the Pixel 3 right there. Plus, Google's optimization isn't as smooth as OnePlus' Oxygen OS. I know OnePlus has more RAM, but that's the point for Google to get better performance.

The iPhone XS/XS Max have the same RAM as the Pixel 3/3XL. The iPhone XR with 3gb RAM will probably be more smooth than the Pixel 3/3XL due to Apple's optimization.

This is funny, iPhone X comes out and people slam the notch... now pixel 3 is out and it has a Notch and a chin! Why?
Also that photo comparison seems really off, no way that the iPhone Xs is that bad... Google Total Fail.

They really took the notch up a notch... and retained the chin... Oh gracious me.

Guys, this will never not be hilarious. Relish these moments. Steve would be cracking up right now at the sight of that thing (and at the A12 benchmark comparisons). This should be a funny parody, but instead it is reality.

Please can somebody confirm cause I can’t find this anywhere. Does this have facial recognition and if so, is it 3D?

All I can find are rumours. This article doesn’t mention it either way, neither does Google’s website.

It has a finger print scanner on the back so I doubt they went to the expense of 3D face scanning.

Still don’t get Google, they launch a design like this up against not only Apple, but Samsung and One Plus, Razer, Plus all the other Android makers including Nokia now. What were they thinking?

I am just looking more forward to the XR launch now :)

My god the comments on this story are so cringe-worthy.

Yeah the Pixel 3 isn’t the greatest looking device. That being said, the camera looks amazing, Google’s AI is much better than Apple’s, and who knows, maybe the WiFi and LTE actually work as designed.

If ALL you care about is a good camera there are plenty of good real cameras and then get an actually good looking and good working phone.

Design, hardware and software is not simply something you can ignore or dismiss because of a good camera.

Chris Pirillo?! Now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time... a long time.

I used to subscribe to him but boy did he get insufferable quickly.

He’s like all the other pathetic You Tubers, moan about a product like the iPhone praising the competition, then a week later make a video of why they went and bought said product they allegedly hated.. all in the name of click bait for videos hits and nothing more.

as a photographer with a 5d mark iv I'm so amazed at the xs camera its insane in low light, no way would that photo be real the background building was bright and everything else is dark, they said that was untouched would is a lie
Are you prepared to eat your hat if you are wrong? Because I've heard "no way" in my life so many times and it never is really "no way".
So my proposition is - lets see the real test reviews and then jump to conclusion regardless of the camera you have at home, shall we? :-D

Ahahahahahahahahaha seriously?!

THAT was the tradeoff for face recognition on the iPhone and an edge to edge display. Even people who didn’t like it understood why they did it. Yet Google don’t have either and still sport the notch.

What an absolute farce.
Disagree. Even if the iPhone didn't have facial recognition they would still have a notch for the ear piece, front camera and sensors.

At least with Android, there is a setting that can black out the screen tabs on each side of the notch so it looks like a solid black bar at the top (no visible notch). We'll never get that on iOS.
It's not a solid black bar. It contains all the system info/icons that normally take up the top of the screen.

I, for one, am making the leap. iOS hasn't improved its utility much. Its AI and machine learning still generate a lot of irrelevant responses. Shortcuts seems like a bandaid.

I was more impressed by Google's metrics for information processing than Apple's number of new stores.

The phones are fine but they're at least a year behind. The camera looks amazing, though.

Enlighten me. In what meaningful way is their phone behind?

But they do have facial recognition, and 3D facial recognition, so...
You said that was the reason why Apple has a notch. I disagreed because they would still need a notch for the other stuff. I didn't say they don't have it. Just disagreeing with your logic of why the notch was implemented.

That photo looks real to me. The people are sitting on a rock under the shadow of a tree, it’s not a common scenario but I can totally see the iPhone getting fooled by that set up. Pixel generally have the best camera of its generation so it will be interesting to see more in-depth reviews.

For what I heard so far the Xs is on par with the pixel 2 and S9, maybe even a bit behind, so we’ll see if this is an incremental update or if google will leap frog again like they did with the original pixel and pixel 2.
What does that mean, “what I’ve heard so far?” In the only scientific test I’ve seen, DxoMark rated the XS far better than Pixel 2.

“It looks the same” or “my friend said” or “I read on a forum that” aren’t solid pieces of data.

You said that was the reason why Apple has a notch. I disagreed because they would still need a notch for the other stuff. I didn't slsay they don't have it. Just disagreeing with your logic of why the notch was implemented.

Hmmm, I’m not sure they’d have released it without Face ID though.

So I don’t think the notch would have come before Face ID, it’s one and the same. If that makes sense.

No one should be defending the design of the 3XL. No excuse for it.

The Pixel 3 although a slightly dated design imo isn't bad but is overpriced.

I am no YouTube star, but couldn’t disagree more with that video.

My pixel 2 has been fine, though it is not an XL. Sadly the XL gave the regular pixel 2 a bad reputation.

On the 2, the Screen has been awesome, response of screen and software has been great. I see no optimization issues with this phone so far.

Big, big, big disappointment with the new Pixels. Almost no interesting features - the "Top Shot" is basically the same as Live Photos instead you don't get a live photo/gif out of it. They barely showed us ONE example of their HDR which seems to be improved only on low-light situations and not in general, like the iPhone Xs.

Google did a great job with portrait mode on a single camera, why couldn't they add a second lens? Image what would they do with two lenses and their software.

And, the phones are ugly.

I guess most of consumers like the notch since everybody is adding them now. They day when there is no choice but to buy a notch phone will be a sad day for me.:(

Actually, I gather that most consumers don’t even care about the notch in general. The ones that make the biggest deal about the notch on the iPhone when it launched for the 2017 X, were the ones on a tech forum. Anyone that I know that has owned the iPhone X has never even commented on the notch whatsoever. You just have those on the Internet That Like to exacerbate something to make it more of an issue, when it’s not.

What an absolute farce.

They tried to combine the „group selfie“ cam with „facial recognition“ into a feature but marketing stepped in due to naming issues.

If people complain about the XS being too incremental the same can be said for the Pixel. And tech press can no longer whine about notches and missing headphone jacks on Apple products.
