He stretches the truth to the conversation. I think previously he said the opposite things in 2 parts of a interview. I really have no confidence in what he says but things might be better between the behemoths. That doesnt mean they dont hate each others guts. They are frienemies.

While at the annual Allen and Co media conference in Sun Valley, Idaho, Google Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt said the company's relationship with Apple is "improving" and that the two companies have been conducting "lots and lots" of meetings, reports Reuters.Schmidt did say that the companies are in "constant business discussions on a long list of issues." Last December, the former Google CEO said that the two companies had an "on and off" relationship and that they would work through any issues in "the adult way."

Apple and Google's relationship has been strained in recent years, with constant patent disputes between Apple and Google's Android parters as well as the removal of both Google Maps and YouTube from iOS. The two companies also have taken their rivalry to apps as Google has Safari competitor Chrome in the App Store and has most recently updated its Google Search app with Siri competitor Google Now.

Schmidt had served as an Apple board member while also holding the position of Google CEO, but as the two companies became increasingly direct competitors following Google's launches of Android and Chrome OS, Schmidt stepped down from Apple's board in August 2009.

The more Apple removes Google from iOS defaults (Maps, YouTube, soon search), the better the relationship gets?

Nobody cares what that little weasel, Eric Schmidt, has to say. Until Google gets rid of him and the three stooges at the top, nothing will change.

Google will be just as arrogant and controlling as ever.

And Apple isnt arrogant and controlling? Come on, get real here.

That might be true if you could change the defaults, and app URIs worked much much much better in iOS than they do today.

Youtube works fine for me.

I believe it is possible for a site/app to target Google Maps and have it fall back to Apple Maps, but it requires custom code on a site/basis basis which is likely why we dont see it a lot. Certainly not ideal, but I guess it gives developers something to work with (although it'd be nice for end users to be able to make that decision).

See https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/ios/urlscheme and http://googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com.au/2012/12/a-new-way-to-add-google-maps-to-your.html

Edit: Sorry, reread your post and you are clearly aware of the URI stuff. I'll leave it there in case its of interest to others.

If that was a question, the answer is no.

As it stands:

- Maps: Google's are the most accurate (not opinion, fact. Sure they are far from perfect, but on a global scale, they are the most accurate)
- YouTube: The biggest online video site. Kinda makes sense to have that on board
- Search: The heart of search, that nobody has been able to get close to matching.

Anyone would have to be really stupid to write Google off. They own three of the hottest web services.

Apple and Samsung sueing each other and trying to ban the sales of the others products, how is that helping their users by eliminating choice. Google pulling support for Gmail on WindowsPhone, how is that helping their users? Or all the FUD in Microsoft's Scroogled campaign? Sounds like they have some issues with each other to me :)

Being and keeping competitive is not the same as hatred. I'm sure you understand the difference.

Not 100% sure about sites, but yes its possible in apps. We use it along with a check to see if Chrome is installed. All our maps based apps now use Google Maps (which we embed into the app, so the iOS device doesn't need Google Maps installed anymore unless you want to redirect out of your app).

With any app you *should* be able to launch it via Safari by simply doing <app-slug>://<app-page> however getting the code right is a bit tricky.

If that was a question, the answer is no.

No, the answer is likely yes.

No one said google was removed, just not as a default. And with the no longer as defaults Google has been able to add things like ads that Apple barred. With Apples blessing as it is in compliance with third party app rules. That is for google an improvement

any yet Apple still uses Samsung as one of their primary (and arguably best quality) suppliers.

For example, Samsung saved the day with the rMBP when the LG displays started cocking up.

I guess Google has noticed the drop in the usage of their search engine- With Apple and Microsoft making Bing the default search engine. Who really goes in changes the default anyway? Maybe 5% of people that buy devices with Microsoft and Apple as the OS I'm guessing.

What he meant is that Google does a much better job handling Google apps than Apple does. YouTube and Maps were hardly updated by Apple when it was bundled with iOS. Now, due to Apple's decision to remove those apps, Google regained control and released much, much better Google Maps and YouTube.

Eric was the snake in the grass sitting on the Apple Board during development of the iPhone, all the while sponging in every little detail of how to develop and design smart phones. Then he left the board suddenly and a few months later....Android phones were born.

And what did they look and feel like? No wonder SJ went ballistic.

Easy to for a criminal to offer to "work with you" after he has already robbed you.

No blatant ripoff here folks ... move along.

I think google is great but their android devices just don't do it for me at all. Maybe some cooperation again would be nice so we can get integrated google services.

Maybe, now that the wunderkind is gone for good, that might actually happen.

Thermonuclear my ass. All that did was to waste huge amounts of money. Maybe not the $40 Billion that He wanted to waste on his failed vendetta, but by any rational accounting, way too much.

Business is no sport for little girls who get their panties in a bunch.

Apple hates Google,

The Steve hated Google. But he is in no position to screw up the relationship between the two companies anymore.

Define "better".

Google's YouTube app, in particular, doesn't seem to want to let me choose an appropriate video quality/resolution, nor does it automatically send anything approaching an appropriate stream quality based on device resolution, connection type, connection speed, etc.

Not that this is iOS-specific. My son, a big YT user, burns through his data plan on his Android phone for the same reasons; it streams in a resolution that his Android phone has to downres to display.

You're wrong. You really think Apple didn't want Google Maps updated?

This little girl did very well in business, far better than many. What Google did should have been illegal, in fact I've no idea how they got away with it. You have Eric Schmidt sitting in on development of ios, and then leaving to release android... Would any normal CEO not go ballistic. Of Steve's tantrums, this was the most reasonable of all.

He was a mole. If I was Steve I would have been pissed off also.

You two need to get your timelines in order and your tin foil hats sent to be cleaned.

Without Samsung's expertise, apple would be unable to make much of anything.

If you think that this was his "most reasonable" tantrum, then your opinion of the man must be even lower than mine.
