Thanks a lot, would have never found this. Unfortunately it's either "Turn on only when my battery is at 20% or lower" or "Turn on when my computer is unplugged", but it's something. Any clue where the ram setting would be?
Yes, go to chrome://flags/#quick-intensive-throttling-after-loading and enable it. It's not a RAM setting per se, but this will alter the handling of RAM, indirectly.

You're welcome, but keep in mind that everything behind a flag is in principal considered development trials, so there may be problems ahead. But these features have been under development for several months now.
I don't even use chrome, but my wife insists upon it, whilst complaining that her computer is slow))) I'm hoping this will take some ram back!

How about you educate yourself? You can change the settings to “Turn on when unplugged”
It’s not in the OP, so the only way I could come to know that is to install the software first. I don’t make it a habit to install stuff just to see what toggles it has. I don’t recall seeing that the power feature was a toggle at all, but it’s in the OP (at least it is now). If I missed that, then sorry. It sure read like it was a last-ditch battery saver mode at first read, and battery saver modes are not usually a good solution for daily use.

it has gained so many energy and memory saver features over the years, that you'd think it wouldn't use any energy or memory at all by now...

Yeah!!… sure they forgot to mention that your Mac got to 20% battery in 1 hour because chrome itself … but then not to worry “energy saver” will kick in… what about you don’t hog my battery all along ??

A bit like every Paralles releases… every year they declare to gain at least 20% over the previous year… by now running a windows vm in parallels is faster than running it on a I9 5khz 😂😂

That’s interesting that education related websites don’t work well under Safari. When I was in my undergrad, everything I had to access (be it online assignments, textbooks, or whatnot) ran great on even my iPad, but that was also years ago.

Honest to God, the two reasons I don’t use Chrome are because I think it’s kinda ugly/clunky and there’s no option to have adblockers on the iOS or Android app. The privacy thing has never bothered me (plus, it’s incredibly easy to make Chrome just as “private” as Firefox and Safari with a few extensions or just getting one of the many privacy focused forks of Chromium. That privacy argument was always a little weak to me).
Yeah, it might just be my school's learning management system, but it's been notorious for not showing images during tests (important) due to Safari's tracking rules that prevent it from grabbing it from the servers (sorry for a not-so-technical explanation, but that was the gist of it). One of my professors had to put a statement to use Chrome as Safari's new privacy measures or w/e prevented multiple students from seeing diagrams that are necessary for an Anatomy course. I'd rather not risk it anymore, so I'll use Chrome.

Most people don't realize that adblockers also help with privacy issues they are so paranoid about. You can also tweak the Google settings on personalization, as you said. Ublock Origin has been hailed for ad-blocking, sure, but it's also supreme in stopping trackers and preserving privacy.

I do use Safari on my iPhone, though.

I'm seeing a lot on here asking why are you using Chrome? For one a lot of jobs have apps and sites that only run in Chrome. Two despite privacy concerns it does have the best rendering engine. Safari is nice but I switched over to Edge because Safari just won't work well or at all with some sites. So it got annoying seeing that message sorry this browser isn't supported etc... I've never had that message with Edge but with Safari I saw it too often. If I didn't use Edge though I would say my second choice would be Firefox.

Safari under Develop menu has User agent to have it mimic other browsers. Should try that with those sites.

Good idea but it’s just easier for me to use Edge and I like the web toolbar apps and chrome extensions add on as well. I ditched Chrome a bit ago because of mostly it just used so much damn RAM. No other browser seems to use nearly as much.

I can’t speak for macOS as I’ve never used Edge on there, but on Windows I found Edge to be much worse than Chrome. I know that people always talk about chrome and RAM, but to be fully honest, the only time I’ve ever had a memory issue with the browser was with Edge on Windows.

I miss EdgeHTML Edge, actually. To this day still one of the fastest and most lightweight browsers I’ve used. Firefox comes close in performance but unfortunately not on being lightweight.

I don't have a Windows Machine anymore but when I used Chrome on my two Mac's and Windows it was OK on Windows but trash on a Mac. Edge has worked fine on my iPhone, Mac, and former PC though. So for me, I just found it the best. I'd likely use Safari as my default honestly since I'm all in Apple now basically but as I said Safari has too many problems with not working at all or at least not correctly. If I ever ditch Edge it's likely gonna be for Firefox though. I tried Opera as well and man it was nice and blazing fast but also had the problem of it just doesn't work for some sites. if you want full compatibility it seems like you need Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Brave.

I used to use Firefox, but I can’t stand their new tab UI, and they stopped letting you revert to the previous style many versions ago. I don’t like that much vertical space being consumed by tabs.
Valid gripe for sure!

I am dealing with it due to my total dislike for the strange memory leaks I had to deal with in Chrome, and the fact that I want Firefox to remain relevant in the browser scene. At this point we are almost back to OEM ownership of all browsers, and I feel that is a Bad deal for all of us.

PLEASe submit your feedback to the Firefox devs on that gripe.

For people who do not need Google Chrome, better find yourself a much efficient and faster browser. Firefox, Safari, Waterfox?

Safari maybe 99% of the time with FFX as a backup if/when something doesn't work quite right.

The only time I routinely lean to FFX is when I'm playing on the Internet Arcade (no sound in Safari).

Glad, Google pushed this update out. Desperately needed. Google Chrome has been using too much RAM. Now, we need it for iOS devices too, please.
Chrome on iOS, like all other browsers, is just a repackaged WebView, so you’re essentially running Safari. There’s no real performance loss using Chrome on iOS over Safari, and Google couldn’t do anything like this on iOS even if they wanted to.

I gave in a few years ago and Chrome is pretty much my default browser across Mac and Windows. I use Safari mostly on my iPad and iPhone.
