A square camera bump is ugly on the iPhone as it's ugly on any other smartphone. It's just something about the proportions and the bulkiness of it that make it seem like an afterthought, very out of place on something so slim and elegant as a modern smartphone.

I personally don't care about companies copying each other. IIRC Samsung copied some of Apple's design clues but if the final product is a good smartphone I really don't care. Just yesterday I was handling my girl's Xiaomi Redmi. It looks like an iPhone XS Max with lesser quality materials and display and stock Android. But it has a really tiny notch (and no Face ID) and a slimmer camera bump than the iPhone, and I have to give it to them, it doesn't look bad at all, because it basically looks like an iPhone XS Max, as I said. Copying is shameful on their part, but for the final customer does it really matter?

Notches and fugly camera bumps are all the rage right now but I don't see them staying. Especially the notch: it's a temporary solution to a new problem, but I bet that designers are already researching something newer and better.

Why not put in a headphone jack?

I will never understand lobbying for an omission of something USEFUL, unless YOU are the one paying for it.

i already spent hours debating this during the iphone 7 days. i am paying for it, so the omission is necessary.

Speak for yourself. You know a ton of people want the headphone jack back. Why even deny this?

and you know a ton of people needed the usb-a ports, but switching to usb-c is necessary and, in fact, a lot better for the future.

Nah
It's not an argument.
It's an observation of what's taken place in the past.
You may not like these changes, it may not be convenient for your circumstances, but that's beside the point.
You can either adapt or move to something that suits your needs.

I should of added HD DVD and Betamax :p

a few years ago ThinkGeek had an April Fools Day Product page; one of their featured "products" was a Betamax to HD DVD converter. Epic. It took me a couple of seconds to realize what I was seeing.

Google has no shame and is obviously grasping at straws. They blasted Apple on removing the 3.5mm on the iPhone 7. Then they did it on the Pixel 2. They touted that they only need one camera lens, and now it goes from 1 to 3 lenses?! What a joke.

Motorola is the first company to offer this facility in its flagship Smartphone. In 2011, among Android phones, Atrix became the standard-bearer by getting this feature. Apple followed Motorola adding a fingerprint reader in its Flagship phone iPhone 5s in 2013 and naming it as Touch ID.

Source

But the phones (and smartphones) did not start with iPhone or Android. As I said, Pantech was the first one and it happened when iPhone did not exist yet.

I’m glad to see you’ve eased back on the insults.

My post was about stock Android, which I specifically mentioned. Touch ID isn’t just a fingerprint reader for unlocking your phone. It’s a system-wide feature that allows you to authenticate into apps, access and auto fill your saved passwords (keychain integration), make payments in person or online when used with Apple Pay. Android had an equivalent system in place in 2015 with Android 6.0, as I mentioned. Combined with Android Pay which came out in September 2015, they reached parity with the Touch ID system that came out in 2013, and with Apple Pay which came out in 2014.

Now, if the rumors are true, it will have taken about 2 years to gain stock Android system-wide support for a FaceID equivalent authentication system. I’m curious to see if Android phones will continue to stick with fingerprint tech, once Android’s FaceID equivalent system is (rumored to be) available in Android Q later this summer.

Speaking about stock Android would make sense if people were buying the phones with it. They don't. Android business model works differently from iOS. Android gets expanded by the vendors.

So Android got fingerprint reader first. Google Wallet was released on September 19, 2011. It took years for Apple to come with similar features. They improved on them. Google is constantly improving their software too.

Android Face ID has been available on Huawei a few months after it was released on iPhone. That's the beauty of Android, you have a lot of choices.

Is this supposed to be a clever retort? The fact that you can't parse a few sentences says all I need to know.

no, it's not a retort. amazing how you seem to always want to cause a fight when in reality, i just didn't want to read your link.

but if you thought it was a retort, that tells me everything i need to know about you. see ya.

The original article is about Google Pixel phones, which run stock Android, which is what my post was about. You keep veering off topic.

Google Wallet wasn’t on par with Apple Pay at all, which is why Google made Android Pay in 2015.

My point was that you paid for having the jack, but didn't get it...argh, nevermind.

We can agree that it's not coming back, regardless of the jack's merit (or lack thereof).

Frankly, as long as there is a dongle for it, I'll be fine.

Given the rate my kids lose/break headphones, I'll just stock up on dongles too or add them to the headphone replacement costs, which is still a LOT less than $200 per incident * #of kids (4).

OR... do what I've already been doing: keep buying Samsung Galaxy devices.

No, you misunderstood me. I didn't mean exchange $$$ for the phone. Having a headphone jack included in the phone negatively affects my overall experience with the phone even if I don't directly use the jack. I'm not going to go into hours of arguments in this again. If you really want to know, go search my posts dating back to the iPhone 7 days. Otherwise, we'll leave it at that.

Great. So me saying "no...no...no..." shouldn't really warrant any sort of rebuttal from you on these forums. No harm done.

But you took the time to reply...

OK then.

I still don't understand where you're coming from, but feel free to ignore this post and/or add me to your ignore list and as you said, "no harm done".

No offense but i don't understand what makes you say that Google copied Apple's square-shaped camera bump. We all know that Apple has not officially released their design. So techically, the Apple's square-shaped camera has not exist. While there is already a product existing for Google.

Google is the new Samsung, copy copy copy, and even worse, copying rumors.

They copied the notch, no headphone jack, and now a square camera bump. Apple should just add a notch to the bottom of the screen just to see what happens.

apple wasn't the first to release a phone with a notch, apple wasn't the first to release a phone without headphone jack and apple wasn't the first to release a phone with a square camera bump.

Do you think Samsung and Google would’ve released phones without a headphone jack if Apple didn’t do it?

I’ll go back even further: Do you think HP would’ve released PCs without optical drives if Apple didn’t do it?

Do you think Apple would have switched to oled if Samsung didnt?

Do you think Apple would have included dark mode if Samsung didnt.

Do you think Apple would have included more than 16GB of storage on the base model of Samsung didnt increase theirs?

Do you think Apple would have included wireless charging if Samsung didnt?

My point? Stop with the stupid copy argument. Its played out. They all copy from each other.

I agree with that... but some companies are more blatant than others.

And let’s face it, OLED screens had their share of issues. The iPhone X fixed a couple of them.

What are the couple of problems the iPhone X fixed?

What's wrong with air? Or a bigger battery. At least the additional weight would be for something.
My point is that this would not come without an opportunity cost.

My 8+ is enough to see me through the day with around 30-40% battery life. In this context, a thicker battery would just mean a heavier phone at no appreciable benefit to me. Likewise, I happen to like the way the 8+ feels in my hand. It's the reason why I don't use a case with my phone, because I just hate how even the thinnest case makes it that much thicker and bulkier.

Having more of something isn't always better, especially if it doesn't give you more of what you want, but instead saddles you with more issues to contend with.

One can imagine why Google is announcing their next phone so early.

It’s pretty obvious that their current pixel phone isn’t selling, so there’s little to lose in announcing their next smartphone offering so early in advance.

Is there anyone here who actually believes this will pose any credible threat to Apple?

The fact that the current Pixel is not selling well is a good thing, a very good thing because it's forcing Google to launch a more competitive Pixel 4 and actually listen to the Android community when they are talking about what type of hardware they like.
Yeah Google got quite the wake up call from the Android community.

Also the Pixel 3 and 3a series were among the most leaked smartphones ever so Google must have thought, why not? let's just tease the upcoming Pixel 4 ourselves before anybody else. It's quite a brilliant idea to be honest especially because it will hinder their haters or negative bombastic click bate article titles like Oh the new Pixels are just a shameless iphone copy wink wink.

What Xioami Redmi is that?
The Redmi Note 7 pro has a tiny notch and it doesn't look like the Xs Max at all.

The iphone x didn't fix any OLED issue.

Apple hasn't announced a square camera bump yet.

In reality, Apple is now in the copying seat. Google has openly said they're using a square camera bump. They were to it first.
Both Apple and Google is then in the copying seat, as Huawei already released a phone long ago with square camera bump (Mate 20 Pro)
