Wow. The competition is fierce. I don’t recall a company coming out like this to be the first and undermine the competition. Props, Google. I wonder how Apple responds to this come September’s iPhone event.

Props Google?

I hope in your lifetime you create something and someone wholesale copies it.

Google is a sh*t company.

The fact that Google decided to even go with more than a single camera means that their software can only do so much.
Hopefully this means that Google might open up their camera app to OEMs that have been doing dual cameras for ages. Right now, all the Android One phones with dual camera have to use the OEM's custom camera app because Android's stock camera app doesn't support more than one camera.

Not enough time in the day to list all the things Android was slow/late to get. Especially low-level architectural or security features.

But, hey, at least you can keep bringing up widgets.
Oh that sucks. Would love to hear more. You can tell me some now and save some for other days.

You are incorrect. Android 6.0 introduced their version of Touch ID back in October 2015:

https://developer.android.com/about/versions/marshmallow/android-6.0#fingerprint-authentication
Motorola is the first company to offer this facility in its flagship Smartphone. In 2011, among Android phones, Atrix became the standard-bearer by getting this feature. Apple followed Motorola adding a fingerprint reader in its Flagship phone iPhone 5s in 2013 and naming it as Touch ID.

But the phones (and smartphones) did not start with iPhone or Android. As I said, Pantech was the first one and it happened when iPhone did not exist yet.

The headphone jack is gone and isn't coming back. Let it go.

Except that it is coming back. The latest Moto Z brought back the headphone jack. The Pixel 3A has a headphone jack... which is why I bought one.

That's when google decided to standardize the fingerprint APIs for all of Android. The Galaxy S5 came out a year before that and had a fingerprint reader.

And Windows Mobile phones had fingerprint readers before the iPhone even existed. The Toshiba g900 came out in 2007 with a fingerprint reader on the back.

Put in a headphone jack. It hurts no one and pleases many.

Speak for yourself. It hurts me to see old tech crap on a 21st-century device that has gotten so good and powerful. People need to learn to accept changes, move on and not get stuck in the past.
And if it makes you feel any better, the headphone jack is DEAD! At least on smartphones for now. More or less in a form of Ghost! And luckily is one of these things I will not miss. Ever!

I can't see where you can down vote this? There is an upvote (like) button, where is the downvote option?

Options suck! Down with options! Wait, where do I register my opinion on options...? Give me the option! I want options! ;)

And yet your argument is older than the headphone jack itself. ;)

An article about camera revolves into yet another e-pens contest between people (who did what first, etc). It’s really old. Am I the only one here that want to discuss if this will make Google to open their camera app to OEMs? Or do we want to just be stuck in the pixxing contest? *sigh

We're you ever forced to use it?

Laughitng at all the people who speak about copying, do they really think it takes 3 minute to produce something?

Muahahahahah I mean could it possibly be that the design follows the function and they end up all being similar? Oh no right Apple invented design :D

C'mon, really for company do develop anything takes time, and while they get inspiration on theway, unless you deliver one year / 2 later than the competitor, it is IMPOSSIBLE to say they copied.

Will it have a FaceID copy too? I remember people guessing that it would take stock Android phones a couple years to catch up with FaceID, this could prove them right.

It took a couple years for Android to get Touch ID back in the day - the iPhone got it in 2013, Samsung had a buggy non-standard implementation in 2014, stock Android had it in 2015.
Android has had FaceID/3D face recognition since 2018 (Huawei Mate 20 Pro).

why. copy. disgusting. apple. design. choices. that. havent. even. taken. off.

whyyyyyyyy
What makes you think it's a copy?
It's not like the 2019 iphone has been launched.
[doublepost=1560411616][/doublepost]
Why not? Apple is too. lol
Yeah. At the end of 2018 Huawei launched the Mate 20 Pro.
So technically both Apple and Google are copying Huawei's back camera design.
[doublepost=1560411816][/doublepost]
So apparently the new Pixel 4 is going to support air gestures as well. Didn’t Samsung already tried that and wasn’t it a big fail?
https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/201...adar-enabled-gestures-thanks-to-project-soli/
Well google will launch a better and more refined option.
They took their time and waited for the tech to mature ;)

OK, your majesty. We won't talk about Google copying the square camera bump from Apple.

Shall we talk about all the things in Android Q that Google lifted from iOS instead?

Like what? The gestures Apple copied from Palm Pre? Or the swipe keyboard, Dark mode, compatibility with external drives, mouse support, compatibility with console controllers, street view, uninstructive volume indicator and so on.
[doublepost=1560413068][/doublepost]
They copied the notch, no headphone jack, and now a square camera bump. Apple should just add a notch to the bottom of the screen just to see what happens.
I thought Motorola and Oppo the first companies to launch smartphones without a headphone jack?

Make the Square camera flush, like LG does with their camera bumps, get rid of that notch in the front, add USB C. Lastly, add Headphone Jack! Then Ill upgrade from my 8plus
Last I checked your 8 Plus doesn’t have a headphone jack...I thought maybe you still have a 6/6S Plus...

Google likes to copy Apple recently, especially rumors.

They copied when they heard rumors about Screen Time and Dark Mode coming to iOS. And now a square bump! Right after following the notch, gesture navigations, and animations. Etc.

I laugh every time when Google eats their own words too when they make fun of Apple, then they do it themselves. They did it with the camera bump, headphone jack, and dual cameras. There’s probably more too.

Google is a joke. ;D
Android basically had Dark Mode in Jelly Bean, Google is just bringing it back.

id rather have more features inside the phone than something i havent used in 5 years but hey thats me. Bluetooth is better than wired when youre doing anything physical like working out, riding a bike, skateboarding ect... You ever try running on a treadmill with your phone on the machine and hitting the wire and your phone goes flying? Yea no thanks.
Once you feel how free it is to use headphones without wires you never go back. Sure you can use wired headphones with the dongle at home or doing anything not physical still so i see no reason for the complaints anymore. Bluetooth audio has also been really good for about 5 years now. I tried those motorola bluetooth behind the neck earbuds 6 or so years ago and the quality and cutouts where horrible. Once i tried jaybird i was hooked. As good of quality as my wired bowers earbuds that cost 180$ and no wires. But seriously this isnt a problem anymore. If you lose that dongle or forget to bring it with you just leave it connected to the 3.5 mm on your wired headphones and move on with your life.

You mean the android implementation that is so imprecise it can be fooled easily?

I guess it's easy to rattle off a laundry list of android features which resemble those on iOS when you don't have to worry about implementation. Just shove a half-baked feature in so you can claim parity with iOS, never mind it can be fooled with a photo. For instance, did you know that for one of the govt apps I use, only the iOS version allows for Face ID unlock? The android version doesn't support it as it is deemed too insecure.

https://www.straitstimes.com/singap...to-log-into-government-e-services-by-scanning

And that is why...

Real multitasking? Both iOS and Android are 100% fully preemptive, multi-threaded and multitasking operating systems.

iOS on iphones is clearly less capable in this area and unlike Android it doesn't offer support for slit screen multitasking, picture in picture, floating windows, floating app bubbles, pie menus etc.
Unless you mean the "fake" definition of multitasking invented by Android users to pretend iOS doesn't multitask.
LoL, fake? o_O
And had you read anything on the release notes for Android Pie and Q you'd realize Google is actually making Android "multitasking" more in line with iOS. Hence my previous comment wondering if Android users will still repeat that same tired meme when Q launches without realizing Google has restricted multitasking.
Google is simply enforcing a few more rules when it comes to background tasks(a lot of these rules existed before but weren't enforced). Functionality won't change, or suffer. I remember that the same was claimed by people like you about Android O and P when Google first enforced rules for background tasks, that Android's ability to multitask will suffer but it didn't suffer at all.
As long as your app starts activities as a direct result of user interaction, however, your app most likely isn't affected by this change. In fact, the majority of apps are unaffected by this change.
File system? More proof you never read my previous post (or read up on Android Q). Google is also taking this ability away in Android Q. Apps will be further sandboxed and you'll need to grant access to get to files. No more universal file managers either.
The file system functionality will remain the same in Android Q, that's what matters.
If apps don't have the permission to access the file system they will work like iOS apps, if they does have that permission they will work like in previous Android versions. Example.

Under screen fingerprint scanners? Uh, that's a hardware feature by companies like Synaptics or Qualcomm. Why are you bringing up hardware in a discussion about copying features between iOS and Android?
Well his point was that Android is leading in those areas and he's correct.

Same goes for memory cards, pen support, USB-C, 5G and so on. You move the goalposts any further and they'll be on the moon.
Yes Android is leading in these areas as well.
