Playlist curation is something that Songza excels at and seems to be the main reason why Google bought them. The idea is to improve the playlist feature of Play Music and also the rumored YouTube music service.

Spotify purchased Echo Nest, another company with good playlist curation technology, before Apple bought Beats. If anything, both Apple and Google are setting up their own services to stay competitive with Spotify.

The logic is: if a company introduces something new before Apple, it is only because they are trying to be first at doing something Apple is rumored to be working on; if they introduce something after Apple has made it, then they are just copying Apple and following in their footsteps. The entire strategy and operation of every single tech company in the world revolves around what Apple does or is rumored to be doing.

That was funny. All tech companies copy. Many of the new features in iOS8 have been in Android for YEARS. Android can do so much more as far as features go... the reason why people don't know this is because when they are on Android, they either don't want to learn it or they don't tinker with their phones as much. I switched to Android a while back because of the UI redesign in iOS7 and the fact that it was so frustrating using Siri and Apple Maps. The awesome things I discovered so far is that Google backs up photos and videos in the Cloud, and you can actually see all of your videos and photos in a web browser... and I can have my phone read me webpages via a free app, and I can modify the entire UI without rooting, and also the fact that I can read free articles from MacRumors and all the other websites in my Newsstand app FREE, which my wife is jealous of (as she has an iPhone). The only thing I miss in iOS is that I can't FaceTime with my wife because she has an iPhone and she doesn't want to use Google Hangouts. But if you compare the App Store and the Google Play Store alone, you'll see how much better and easier it is to browse through apps, and use it in general because you don't have two separate apps for apps and music. Anyway, I guess it's all just a matter of taste. I do think Apple has great products but there's a lot more work to be done in iOS... and if only they would come up with a more robust Office Suite already. I mean, that is the sole reason why people are still using Windows, yet Apple wants to focus on a stupid watch that probably won't do well unless it can replace your phone.

The watch will be like your phone. Why do you think iOS 8 introduced continuity?

Songza has some decent playlists but doesn't have an on-demand service like Beats or Google Music does.

Streaming on Songza is great because whatever the programmers did, it doesn't eat up the battery like GM does...

It is probably due to Songza streaming being one way while Google Music might be sending back a constant stream of your data at the same time. Songza sends you music. Google Musica sends you music. But are you constantly sending it your location and status information like what other apps you are using or if you are on the phone? That might be why there is more battery drain.

How thick are some people on this site? Google bought Song a because of how well they curate playlists. It is a feature that lacks a bit in Google Play Music, which is a paid service that relies on zero ads. Songza also has a premium option with no ads.

Apple bought Beats for brand recognition, cool factor among youths, and a profitable headphone business. Google bought Songza specifically to integrate their playlist curation. Two very different purchases.

This is a good point, GM does suck at music list curation.

Google is on the right track. My whole world has been Google for years. Chrome, Gmail, Google Contacs, Google Calendar, google Maps. I couldn't be happier with the ecosystem. I was only resisting switching from Dropbox. With dirt cheap prices on Drive and new Docs, I made that switch too. Final part is switching to Nexus and I'm looking forward to that. Enough of this crap iPhone.

APPLE DID NOT BUY THEIR BEATS FOR THERE MUSIC STREAMING SERVICE! They bought it for the brand.

Aman brother. The nice thing about the google's ecosystem is that it's also open and you can do so much more. Another nice thing is that with google docs, you get google as a spell check and it always know the right spelling, unlike pages whose spell check to me is lacking. Wait off on buying a nexus, when Android L is finally released we should expect to see an updates nexus.

That's what I'm going to do. Bye bye Apple and its closed services. I'll feel good, knowing that all Google products will be supported by all devices until the last day of the world.

I don't know what's worse, the ppl saying apple does everything first or the ppl saying Google doesn't copy apple.

Both sides are wrong of course.

When are people going to get off this bus? All I ever hear in Apple forums is "the only reason company x came out with x is because they thought Apple may come out something similar". It's getting overly ridiculous already and gives the impressions of a forum full of preschoolers. I feel like I'm watching my 4 yr old playing with his friends.

I was being sarcastic :)

I've been on songza for a year. It blows beats away. I mentioned this multiple times on multiple threads about Beats and no one ever took notice. Except Google.

So true, I've been enjoying Songza for quite some time. When the topic comes up in conversation one thinks music.

When Beats comes up one thinks rap/hip hop/elicit sex and drugs. It's the gangsta culture Apples sure to be proud of... Oh wait!

Apple also bought Beats Music for the industry's best playlist curation engine... powered by actual humans. There's more talent at that company than just the 2 big names that come on board with them. Two very similar purchases... one cost more for a good reason, though.

Sadly, you have your head buried in the sand and it bothers you that folks are stating the obvious. Google copies. Samsung copies. Apple copies. It would be nice if you got off the bus and quit whining.

The whole point of a message board is for folks to come together and share thoughts. They (the people you are whining about) are using the platform correctly.
Sharing thoughts and opinions are one thing and excerising sensationalism is another.

If you consider banter a discussion, then my apologies... Carry on

Apologies

Because all the hype is about wearables right now. Just because you're not interested doesn't mean that that applies to everyone. I wouldn't diss the iWatch until you see it, none of us really knows what it's going to be capable of.

Really? Severely beating a woman over and over became just a "charge of violence"???

You were the one that turned his violent against ONE woman to WOMEN. Who are the other women he slammed heads into a wall as your post stated?

I'll await your answer

5 million subs who don't pay anything aren't worth very much. And the beats acquisition was really to bring on board two music industry insiders.

I see how little you understand about marketing. And as another has said - they could have gotten the two industry insiders for a lot less than what they paid.

I'm seeing a patten. and hate it...

Apple purchases Beats, Google follow

All of this very well relates to Lemming... Apple's the 'kin pin' leader, and all the other bastards jump of the cliff..

Just like the real world :)
(maybe that's why i like playing it so much)

Just once, i'd like to see Google/Microsoft do something that doesn't first involve Apple doing it first.

From services, to products..... Its all the same.

What's actually new out there?
