Google Lens and standalone VR.
Ah, Their WordLens purchase has been refined further, that is certainly exciting if you use it.

VR, I don't know, maybe its because I'm seemingly the only millennial on the planet that thinks VR is (and going to be) a hype disease (AR on the other hand has hugely exciting potential), my eyes just gloss over when the subject comes up.

Google and Microsoft are trying to use iOS to get all users into their eco-system: apps, cloud, assistants.

I wonder how this will pan out... one winner, or the choice of the 3 big-gun-eco-systems for more than a decade:
– Apple
– Google
– Microsoft
These 3 love-HATE eachother.

I see the mobile device as the food tray while the services are the food and desserts. Google has been smart to focus on having the best cross-platform services while Microsoft recently caught on with post-Ballmer era. Apple will eventually pay the price for not caring about services or cross-platform.

I have no doubt Google Assistant is better than Siri. But how is this useful at all on iOS? Who is going to open an app just to use the assistant?

It's a demo, a trojan horse as you will. It gives people a working version of how much better Android is.

....not caring about services? *mark wahlberg squinty meme*

Services are Apple's #1 growing section of the company.

Apple need to drag their web based services into 2017, and make them robust, and play nicely with other ecosystems.
Google need to stick at something for more than 5 mins, and support what they do have properly for 'normal' users

..MS look the best for me right now, have migrated my cloud services to O365 and been impressed so far but as usual YMMV.

Totally agree like decide on going forward with one chat/sms app, one email (inbox or Gmail) (keep or reminders app)

Still since it's excellent at web apps and is cross platform it's my current ecosystem. I can use my iphone or Android device back and forth seamlessly. Sorry but Apple is too restrictive in what devices I can use their services on. No thank you.
[doublepost=1495049408][/doublepost]Unfortunately looks like assistant isn't available in Canada. Too bad I wanted to try it out :(

I'm sorry but Google's assistant is better than Siri. Apple seriously needs to step up. Here's looking at you WWDC.
*patiently awaits the lazy tech "journalists" to point to a revamped Siri at WWDC as somehow a "response" to Alexa/Assistant as if these things can be overhauled in the span of two weeks*

Google is so far ahead of Apple in Ai its not even funny and Apple can't catch up unless Google makes a major error. Every day their AI will get smarter and learn new skills because of all the data they collect. Google has always been an ai company, search was just a means to an end. I recently switched to IOS and none of these announcements make me want to switch back but Apple may start to see their fortunes change as AI becomes a normal part of every day life.

....which is why Apple has been developing their AI offerings for years. They just didn't shout from the rooftops about it. They're also focused on doing it in a way that is strictly on device instead of collecting people's data. Obviously with that privacy concern in place Apple will never likely match Google, but personally I'll take the tradeoff seeing as I don't use assistants all that much anyway.

What AI? We dont have AI..Its pre canned responses to search queries that are already on the internet..

I agree and I also think Apple knows this. Over the past few months, Tim Cook has been talking about the future of augmented reality and I think this is a big focus area for the company. While I concede that Google Assistant is so far beyond Siri, I still don't trust Google as much as I do Apple with its info collection. That being said, Siri needs a major upgrade or it will sooner than later be left behind.

There is going to be a war on AI which Apple couldn't afford to lose.

Google AI is getting smarter every day while Siri is getting dumber. The services are relatively as smart as the people in management so Cook, Schiller, Cue, etc. don't paint a positive outlook for Apple.

At least the Google Assistance easily connected to my Honeywell thermostats, a device which is not Homekit enabled.

I do like the Photo features of being able to automatically share photos with my spouse. The number of photos we both take that are not shared must be staggering.

pretty cool keynote was really impressed with google lens, hope that will come in iOS 11. Using google assistant now and it works surprisingly well. Will use both of them on the daily. Siri for setting reminders, sending text messages, driving directions, and google assistant for the more advance stuff that siri struggles with. Hope we see a much improved siri at WWDC.

I am going to make a prediction that Siri will be a part of the Apple keynote in a huge way and its abilities will silence the haters...

The problem is that Siri / Alexa overall quality of responses have been better than Siri for a few years now, not just a couple weeks.

Any revamp to Siri has been long overdue by years. Not just "two weeks". if Apple comes out with a home speaker, than yeah, two weeks is far too short for a "response" and Apple has likely had one in the works for longer. But Siri itself is a few years behind both Google's and Amazon's machine learning / AI.

it's what happens when you piss off the original developers of the tech and they leave your company looking for greener pastures.
