I have no doubt Google Assistant is better than Siri. But how is this useful at all on iOS? Who is going to open an app just to use the assistant?

People like me who have given up on Siri. She is absolute garbage.

Dictating a text to my wife:
Me: Send a text to NAME that say's I'll be home by 5.
Siri: I'm sorry I don't recognize NAME. [even though it was recognized earlier]
Me: Repeat.
Siri: I'll send a text to NAME that says Beehive.
Me: Repeat.
Siri: Sorry, I didn't get that.
Me: Repeat process five times until it works.

Finding the phone number of a local framing shop:
Me: Call "NAME Framing Shop"
Siri: Here are 3 framing shops near you. [50 miles away]

Finding a Vietnamese restaurant:
Me: Find All Chay Vietnamese.
Siri: Sorry, I don't recognize that.

Google finds the last two every time, the first time.

With Apple adding more Android features by the year, and Google apps being better on the iPhone than Android, it's making it harder by the year to even waste your time buying an Android device.

Google is so far ahead of Apple in Ai its not even funny and Apple can't catch up unless Google makes a major error. Every day their AI will get smarter and learn new skills because of all the data they collect. Google has always been an ai company, search was just a means to an end. I recently switched to IOS and none of these announcements make me want to switch back but Apple may start to see their fortunes change as AI becomes a normal part of every day life.

Not at all. One of Android O's "features" is the ease of selecting directions. iOS has had that for years as it knows what is considered a mapping direction, contact, etc. that is AI.

Apple has made some great strides with inter app communication. If you have an address copied in clipboard and go to maps, the copied address is the first suggested direction. Also have seen it where if someone messages you an address and it's still fresh, maps will suggest that address. Has Goog caught on to this or is it in O (think I heard it mentioned).

The keyboard suggests emojis and actually does get better as you type I've found out. Same with Siri.

Suggested apps.
Suggested contacts
Suggested contacts
Etc

Apple is making great strides. They are taking the slow route instead of jumping a cliff and having to climb back to do important things. Honestly made me laugh that Goog is still trying to make text selection not suck.

Google and Microsoft are trying to use iOS to get all users into their eco-system: apps, cloud, assistants.

I wonder how this will pan out... one winner, or the choice of the 3 big-gun-eco-systems for more than a decade:
– Apple
– Google
– Microsoft
These 3 love-HATE eachother.

The way I look at is that Apple is still the whole package in terms of hardware, software, mobile and desktop operating systems.

Apple: iOS and iPhones/iPads, macOS and Macs are fantastic.
Google: Android and Pixels are great but their desktop OS and computers are practically non-existent.
Microsoft: Windows Phone is dirt but Windows and their computers are great.

Apple is the only one that can blend great software with great hardware, regardless of whether it's mobile or desktop class computing.

was added to duing Android M via the Google App.

Long press homebutton on any screen (On a google phone) and it will open up a set of cards with contextually aware information from that screen, so if Someone emails you an address, while your email is open, long press home and you get a card that contextually interprets that address and gives you a "maps" card with that address and directions

The bit where you scan the WiFi router code and the phone automatically connects was okay.

Except:

  • It's something you do 2 times each year
  • Your "friend" won't have the sticker 99% of times
  • It's just easier and faster to just tell the password

This keynote was boring and I thought that Apple events were boring. Nothing new just what we already knew already. Really nothing.

dont worry apple will continue thier run of amazing keynotes next month to amaze us all :) strap in.....

I see the mobile device as the food tray while the services are the food and desserts. Google has been smart to focus on having the best cross-platform services while Microsoft recently caught on with post-Ballmer era. Apple will eventually pay the price for not caring about services or cross-platform.
Not caring about services like iCloud, iMessage, iCloud Photo Library, FaceTime, iTunes, Apple Music, Siri, iWork, etc., those are all pretty damn good services. Apple releases those cross-platform when it's beneficial for their growth. That's why Apple Music and iTunes have been released.

Google Assistant is better at parsing voice, but like most google products it seems to lack focus. If I compose a text message, having an option to read my reply before sending would be great (not available). For calling, another basic voice command; Google Assistant can't seem to parse Call XXX iphone, vs Call XXX home. Where it sometimes ignores the last portion of the command or worse it takes me to a google search, while Siri gets it correct.

Btw this is Google Assistant on latest Beta on a Nexus & Pixel device. But it does work GREAT for googling things, that you then have to look at the screen?

Okay, but opening an app to tell Google Assistant to text your wife is a ridiculous way to go about doing it. It's no longer hands-free. It would be easier to just open the Messages app and type it out if the phone is already in your hands.

You are not at all thinking of the practical application .... companies, hotel, resturants etc.... when you ask for the code, you can just scan an image.... getting on wifi as conveniently as it is to use Apple Pay to make a contactless purchase.

Hope you understands it's application?

Your thinking google make this for when you visit your mates house....lol no....

Some welcomed changes, and at-a-glance I liked the idea behind the camera AR, but otherwise, a complete dud of a release.

And LOL at Android getting notification dots in 2017. Am I missing something? All this badgering in the past from those dorks about live icons and such, and they never had notification dots??

If Apple had this same keynote, they'd be ripped to shreds here and elsewhere.

To be fair, I'm not sure the notification dots are really that important on Android especially since unlike iOS, you don't have all of your apps on your homescreen to begin with. In my experience, Android is just so much better at notification management. iOS beats Android in having a more centralized place to manage notification settings but fails everywhere else with them.

They all win.

Apple for the hardware. Google for the consumer ecosystem and MS for Corporate apps.

If it's a company that uses pre-shared key? Then it's a lame company that just doesn't care.

Any self-respected company has a RADIUS or other WPA-EAP

you have literally no clue what you're talking about

While both are great to have, there are numerous other technologies in play for public access WiFi in areas such as hotels, restaraunts or offices that must be accounted for.

for example, a hotel offering free guest WiFi isn't using some form of centralized active directory user account for it's hotel guests to allow them onto the wifi, nor are they providing (and shouldn't be) a generic WPA based key.

What they need are one time use only keys that can be applied to end user devices that hvae limited time and expirey. This is what Google is trying for here. imagine going into a hotel, and instead of having to search for the WiFi, get some login page, and login with some sort of public credentials, you point your camera as a barcode and you're automatically connected with your one time connection information.
