Hey kid, if you think Apple is gonna give you 150gb of online storage for a reasonable price, you need to stay back a few grades. It will be cheaper to buy 2 iphones than pay apple for storage.

MobileMe = $100 and you get 20gb. LOL.

Exactly, the last time 20gb cost $100 in the real world, Steve Jobs weighed more than 60 lbs. But the worse part about Apple's offering was having an email address with '@me.com' at the end. Tre' classy!

Apple needs to get serious with it's iTunes offerings and stop with these half-a$$ed products with premium prices.

Well these new google products and offerings seem like a home run hit. Now it is Apples turn. O do I love competition.

Google seems to be unable to finish products before rolling them out. They're becoming marketing-driven instead of engineering-driven. Which makes perfect sense when you think about it. Google makes 96% of their profits from advertising.

Google might have finished Music and rolled it out later if Google I/O weren't happening right now. They needed a dog and pony show to distract the world from droid's post-openness. And their own version of Locationgate. (Let's see how long it takes for them to update all the versions of droid to fix that.)

But it's not just Google releasing beta-quality products. Look at RIM's half-baked PlayBook with no native e-mail app. And Motorola's Xoom that still doesn't have a pad-capable OS. And all the El Cheapo iPad clones: the Coby Kyros, Sylvania Magni, and Camangi FM600 are all out there. Somewhere.

Don't believe me? Here's proof:

http://www.lifeatmost.com/tablet-pc/camangi-fm600-7-inch-android-tablet-running-froyo/

Lol...I sorta have to agree with this. I think they are in a way training the public of purchasing products with half working features (that are advertised to sell the product in the first place) and software in "beta" so that if you have a problem becuase it's in beta you shouldn't fully expect it to work anyway. *Although in fairness I will say they haven't rolled out the music portion to all customers*

It's like selling a beta side by side refrigerator/freezer with promise that the freezer side will work in the next 6 months but becuase it's still in beta you shouldn't hold them to task to have it working in 6 months too.

The really insane thing about "cloud storage" for music is that it only makes sense for ripped CDs, a dying practice. Apple *already* has "cloud storage" for all their music - it's called the iTunes Store.

Why would they want a million people re-uploading music files they've already got a copy of and could serve out from a single source?

Physically uploading your own files to some service? Who is going to do that? Oh, yes. Geeks! But not consumers. Why would anyone want to do that?

If it's not effortless and automatic, it's dead in the water.

Hmm that sounds a bit wrong. You have no backup from Itunes if your hard drives crashes.

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3033719?start=0&tstart=0

Ever try and move 20,000 songs from one computer to another in Itunes? (about 1/4 purchased from Itunes) Not the easiest thing in the world to do.

I've been wondering that for a long time. Apple generally makes good software, so you'd think they'd be capable of improving iTunes. My guess is that it's because they keep duct taping more functions onto it rather than scraping it and starting over.

I haven't used it on a Windows PC, because I don't use Windows. I have heard it doesn't run well on those systems. However, I've used iTunes on Leopard and SL, and don't find any issues with it at all. Runs fine...

I think people tend to generalize.

No it won't. I hear Windows users with their $500 laptops complaining all the time. Get a good computer and life will be better. Get your sandy bridge with the additional components needed to make it run well.

I had a Dell user tell me recently that "you get what you pay for". He was right. His Dell was over $1000. The $500 machines subsidize the cost of the better machines to bring the price down a little.

Most people need a better machine but don't know it. They are wasting their money.

Most people use their computers to browse facebook, listen to music and watch movies. They should not have to spend $1200, and spending $1200 to do the above WOULD be a waste of money.

Contrary to popular Apple fan belief, you could go to your local supermarket and pick up a $400 laptop that would be great for Music (just not itunes due to it being a pile of crap on Windows) (winamp, songbird, etc), Movies, Facebook, Youtube, etc.

My whole life I have been an early adopted, on the cutting edge of tech.

Maybe I am now an old man, because I SIMPLY FAIL to see the point in either Amazon or Google's offering.

1. Streaming all media in an age of mobile data caps? Not cute.
2. 8GB, 16GB, 32GB etc. is a ton of space to house thousands of songs locally. No network connection required. Will it hold your entire music collection? Probably not. But you don't listen to your entire music collection all the live long day.
3. If you want access to your entire collection, stream from your own computer via AudioGalaxy or whatever other programs there are out there. AudioGalaxy works very well. Yes, your computer needs to be on. Big deal.

So to recap, use local. If you want to stream, stream from your own computer, but keep in mind your data caps.

Why does a third party need access to all of my files? F that. Google and Amazon are not game changers here. People are flipping out like they're doing something impressive. Keep in mind, I actually really like Google and Amazon :)

Uh, so you are buying CDs to get your new music, which does involve the record companies.

If all you are talking about is uploading your existing collection of music, then it makes no difference where you got it from (Amazon, iTunes or CD -- all of which involved the record companies).

I'm referring to google music not including the record companies. I was replying to a commenter who stated this service was half-baked because the record companies weren't supporting it. In my opinion this is a positive thing. I can get my music from wherever I choose and upload it.

Absolutely. Good components aren't cheap! I owned an Envy for a while, but I had to return it because the fans were just too loud.

That's true if you want more than 2GB. It's important to note how cheap it is though. Last time I renewed with them I paid $50 for the year and got a free EyeFi card.

If the service integrates with Android as well as Picasa Web Albums does on my Xoom and Nexus S, this will be quite good for me.

Every single picture and album I upload to Picasa is avaiable on my phone and if it's as seamless as this I'll be impressed. I just hope iOS compatibility is on the cards.

Today feels like War on Apple day:

1) Microsoft buys Skype, poised to set up a Facetime competitor across Windows devices and Xbox.
2) Google announces a flurry of Android related developments that challenge iOS, iTunes, etc.
3) YouTube begins its assault on iTunes by announcing movie rentals.

If nothing else, maybe this will finally force Apple to rewrite (or rethink) iTunes so that it stops sucking. I'm also wondering how much longer Apple thinks it can sit out the TV market before it's too late. At the very least, it needs to sign up some partners to carry Apple TV as an OS. And that means it probably needs to have its own little "Ice Cream Sandwich" moment where it streamlines iOS across Apple TV, iPhone, iPad, and Lion.

Google wants Android to be compatible with literally every object that plugs into a socket. Apple should want the same.

AppleTV 2 is still better than googleTV. They sold way more units.

Apple will blow all this crap away next month.

Skype is old ass tech.....Microsoft overpaid

Facetime Just works....Apple will push it out to more OSs in the near future.

I think Amazon did a pretty smart thing in mirroring the way they do the music with how they do books.

When you buy a song from Amazon you can download as well as add it to your music storage. Pretty darn simple and smart and easy for the consumer.

I think Amazon has been smart in building their brand with books and music and where Apple could defintely take a few pointers from.

I love my iTunes.
Speedy, looks nice & does what it's supposed to do.

I agree Itunes is pretty good...the haters just want to hate.

But we all know apple is gonna make it better soon.

iCloud will run them all!

They be #winning!

I will say good point too - although again, I think Amazon did a pretty smart thing in mirroring the way they do the music with how they do books.

I agree Amazon cloud music system is awesome...they just need to release an iOS app...

Well, again, all Google is doing is giving you storage with an mp3 player. You don't need label support for that.

I think they had something different in mind but becuase they didn't get label support what they introduced was what they were forced to do instead.

iTunes is great. Some people think the future is managing filenames, metatags, manually uploading files to the cloud... sourced from ripped CDs.

I've got an idea... Google should offer a service where they buy the CD you want off Amazon, have it shipped to them, rip the CD, then upload it for you to the cloud so you can stream it to your devices.

Agreed! It's not quite as smooth running it through the browser on the iPhone, although it's nice you can use the play controls in the task bar to control the music.

Honestly, if they could build something like Stitcher - they'd be a pretty phenomenal selling point with purchasing music from Amazon.

My smartphone has a limited battery life. Above all things, I want to have my needs met while not needed to be plugged in constantly. Streaming music, especially on phones with lots of storage space, is not only a waste of battery life but a waste of storage space. Coupled with the need to upload your music to their servers, streaming music to your smart phone is one of the worst ideas I've seen.

I couldn't agree more. Google went to town at this I/O. I'm really impressed with the span of their developments.

Really? Is anything that Google announced today shocking or revolutionary? So far they have announced they are trying to cure fragmentation which they announced last year and still hasnt worked. Movie rentals and clould storage is old news and they are finally catching up. So far there is nothing surprising to me.

I love audiogalaxy. Great app and service!

At least they know how to look after their developers unlike Apple ;)

Also, it looks like every single person that attended was given a Galaxy Tab free of charge
