The ads are being pushed to your iPhone by Google, who's motto is "Don't be evil." Ads I'm ultimately paying for in my data plan because it pushes them to my device without my permission, hence the reason I won't use the app. They might not be very big data-wise, but several hundred of them over the course of a day DO add up. While I understand the need for advertising, I don't think I need to be seeing an ad everywhere I turn. It's the same reason I don't watch YouTube on the web on the desktop. Too much garbage distracting from whatever it is you're trying to watch.

What is evil about subsidizing their services with ads ? Are you suggesting they should offer payed subscriptions to YouTube instead ?

As soon as I downloaded the app and saw how ugly it was. I deleted it right away. When iOS 6 comes out I'll download it again but for now I'm happy with the default GOOD LOOKING app.

You watch several hundred YouTube videos in the course of a day? If you ask me, the short ads would be the least of your data worries.

Awesome news. I can't wait to download it. Looking forward to the Google Maps app.

Not really sure this is awesome news, since I really don't mind going to you tube directly (if I need to see something on You Tube).

Liking apple maps so far (waiting for final release) but would like to compare with the potential google maps app for iPhone.

Native YouTube App released after Apple removes YouTube from iOS.

BREAKING: Google says "fu*k you"

Awesome. Just tried it out, and I can't wait for the iPad version. Honestly, the only thing that keeps me from switching to the iPad for all of my daily content consumption is the native youtube app....it's soooo painfully slow to load that it's just not practical, and viewing through a browser is first of all annoying, but also not much better. The google youtube app loads just as fast as youtube on my macbook does, so if the iPad version follows through my macbook will collect dust a majority of the time.

Except that's not what happened - Apple and Google had a licensing agreement that expired. Apple didn't pull the app - they lost the right to the API and Google knew that was going to happen so they wrote an app. Google isn't spiting anybody here.

Isn't this technically against the "no app that duplicates core iOS functionality" rule?

I believe they should. I'd rather pay 10 dollars a month and save 15 seconds for every video I watch.

The background playback probably wasn't needed, google was thinking that people will watch video rather listen to music the feature will come later but for now just try to cope without it, I'm just happy that the videos I watch on my MacBook will pop up on this app

Having background audio on the YouTube app (regardless of smartphone) is hugely important to kids, they use it essentially as their version of Pandora. They don't need to pay for a subscription, the app doesn't cost money, the music doesn't cost money, and they playlists are easily shareable. They just listen to the music and mostly don't even pay attention to the video.

The Amazon Cloud Player does this, as well as Apple's own Music iOS app. You can even control the volume/play/pause from the iOS lock screen.

No reason Google couldn't make this work for the new YouTube app, esp. for the kids that use playlists to listen to music.

Typical Google, not meeting even the lowest of expectations.

That's because there's no api for background video. Only for background audio.

No. Apple knows that in a week or two the local app is going away and second, it's not really a core feature, and three, YouTube is Google brand and therefore Google is duplicating their own core app since it's their API anyhow despite Apple programming it.

As I said I understand the need for advertising, however I don't care for the way Google goes about it. They are always in your face, you can't ignore them, and as I said they eat the limited data in my data plan (especially the video ads you can't skip). However it's not just about the ads, but the entire Google ecosystem they have created. I don't like it and I don't have to play in it. So I won't. Enjoy your ads.

Unfortunately the "not available on this platform" issue is becoming a real pain with Youtube, and this app of course does not alleviate it.

If you don't want your video seen on a mobile device you might as well forget about putting it on Youtube at all.
