Is there a way open links from my mail or messages and have it open in the new youtube app as apposed to m.youtube.com?

They don't need to, Google could easily use iOS's API for playing audio in the background, they just didn't bother. I hope it comes in an update.

I know, but I friggin' hate ads and I prefer to block 'em.

Not nessacary so. Its a video app...i never heard of a video app that plays in the background.
The api probaly only works for audio files.

I like this app very much compare to the old one. It is not a universal app, that means it cost smaller space for both your phone and ipad. It has ads because you can get more content, moreover, compare to the video size you are watching, the ads is nothing. why complain so much? just because it is from google? childish.

Hmmm... More advertising built in by the company who's motto is "Don't be evil." No thanks I'll pass. Nothing on YouTube I absolutely have to have in my life anyway.

Hmmm. I removed the youtube app from my screen a couple years ago and don't miss it one bit.

A good Vimeo app might be nice. ...but another youtube app has about as much appeal as a myspace or facebook app.

Quite necessary for music videos, documentations, yada yada. Folks eventually find that useful, especially when your phone is in the pocket and you want to quickly control the audio via your headphones. The preloaded "old" (yet most simple) YouTube app can do that, like the iPod app as well as Podcasts via the video app or the new Podcast app, and even many 3rd party apps, like AirVideo. The API works for both audio and video, and there is no reason why it shouldn't.

It also seems to me because of the many issues users here and me are dealing with (AirPlay, REAL fullscreen mode, volume etc.), that this app is like the old Facebook app - HTML5 wrapped up in an iOS app. But since Google is way too much into HTML5 than finetuning an app for a specific OS, we can only use what is given to us, or remain with iOS 5.

The Amazon Cloud Player does this, as well as Apple's own Music iOS app. You can even control the volume/play/pause from the iOS lock screen.

No reason Google couldn't make this work for the new YouTube app, esp. for the kids that use playlists to listen to music.

Typical Google, not meeting even the lowest of expectations.

What is the connection between showin ads and the motto?

The ads are being pushed to your iPhone by Google, who's motto is "Don't be evil." Ads I'm ultimately paying for in my data plan because it pushes them to my device without my permission, hence the reason I won't use the app. They might not be very big data-wise, but several hundred of them over the course of a day DO add up. While I understand the need for advertising, I don't think I need to be seeing an ad everywhere I turn. It's the same reason I don't watch YouTube on the web on the desktop. Too much garbage distracting from whatever it is you're trying to watch.

The background playback probably wasn't needed, google was thinking that people will watch video rather listen to music the feature will come later but for now just try to cope without it, I'm just happy that the videos I watch on my MacBook will pop up on this app

Yes, ads are pushed by Google. Obvious.

1. You're not paying the ads with your data plan because your telco doesn't pay nothing to Google

2. You have granted your permission when you download an accept the TOS of the application.

Not using the apps is totally right if you don't want ads but I still don't know what has to do the ads with the motto.

Lame.

Ads before every video ensure that I won't use the app.

Not all videos have ads. There is a class of Youtube videos that have existed for a long time with ads - you see them when viewing on a regular desktop/laptop computer. These videos could not be played in the old Youtube app, since it lacked support for ads.

But now you can see them in this app. And all the other videos you could see before without ads will STILL BE WITHOUT ADS.

You'll just get the same experience as on a regular computer. If you see ads there, you'll see them in the new app. If not, you won't see them there either.

Pay attention.

Erm... Facebook pretty much lifted it from Android.

I don't use Android, I have an iPhone so I was obviously unaware of this.

Is that a deal breaker? Can you not move your thumb 5mm and use the buttons?

Tin foil hat to table number one please!! Because when APPLE steals your personal information it's perfectly fine because it's Apple?

I like Apple so I don't mind. I don't like Google lol.

Fab, though personally this is a negative change still, even though I accept I'm a fringe case, if I see ads I won't bother waiting for the video. I'd rather have an app that showed only ad-free youtube videos.

It'd be splendid if you could leave the attitude at the door, there's no need for it. I know it's exciting to feel like you're correcting someone who is *gasp* slightly misguided, even wrong, on the internet, but brandishing caps and informing people to "Pay attention" is just ridiculous. Get over yourself.

I guess that'll learn me for having the audacity to casually post in a page 1 thread.

As promised, Google has introduced a native YouTube app for iPhone. We had previously reported that Apple will be removing the dedicated YouTube app from iOS 6 which is due to be released in the near future. At the time, Google promised that a native iOS app was in the works. YouTube had previously been one of the built-in iOS apps since the original iPhone launch.

The app just appeared in the App Store as a free download:

The YouTube blog outlines some of the new features:The app does not yet natively support the iPad, but the NY Times reports that a native iPad app is in the works.

In order to provide mobile users with the "tens of thousands" of new videos, the app now supports display of ads with videos. Previously, these videos were unavailable on iOS due to the previous lack of support for ads.YouTube is now available as a free download. [App Store]

I love the new YouTube application but Google need to fix some translation problems in their apps. One in this YouTube app is that some text in the post header line are obscured. This is very obvious when you have the language set to swedish where words tend to be a bit long. Normally it reads: (The Verge) uploaded 4 days ago.

And in different languages it reads: (T..) laddade upp ett nytt videkli...4 dagar sedan.

By the way, Apple need to fix some of these as well.. Particulary in the app store.
