I like the App but I too DISLIKE that they took out the volume slider.

My iPad 2's volume down button no longer works so I rely on that slider to adjust my volume when I watch YouTube videos :(

I doubt they will add a slider for the iPad version when it's released. Hopefully they add it to both versions!

(pessimistic post) sure it's alright now. But you wait. I give it 6 months before it's over-run by adds. Monetization (although necessary) will ruin this app.

It's tricky, I feel like lack of monetisation could equally ruin an app. The facebook app has been a case in point over the last few years.

Hang on a minute.

I thought Apple fans hated Google with a passion, why is everyone wanting this on their phone and not accepting Apple's way?

Why would you be all putting a Google app on your phone if you despise them so much?

I suppose this just proves you were confused. You do realize Google makes a lot more money from iOS than Android. It would appear a lot of iOS users use Google services...

As I said I understand the need for advertising, however I don't care for the way Google goes about it. They are always in your face, you can't ignore them, and as I said they eat the limited data in my data plan (especially the video ads you can't skip). However it's not just about the ads, but the entire Google ecosystem they have created. I don't like it and I don't have to play in it. So I won't. Enjoy your ads.

What services do you use which are free and do not contain ads, specifically what makes these comparable services different than Google in terms of implementation of the ads. Don't go and say Vimeo, it's too small to be comparable to YouTube.

Anyways, you can do what you want, I and millions of other people will continue to enjoy YouTube, as revolutionary as it has been as a website. YouTube is awesome. The app is awesome.

Except that's not what happened - Apple and Google had a licensing agreement that expired. Apple didn't pull the app - they lost the right to the API and Google knew that was going to happen so they wrote an app. Google isn't spiting anybody here.

And the original agreement came because there were no 3rd party apps.

People pay to use Vimeo anyway.

yes it does

No, it doesn't!

I'm not talking about channels or things you've got marked within your YouTube account (online). I'm talking about the Favorites selection within Apple's original YouTube app. That Favorites area allows you to save a list of Favorite YouTube videos without having to log into (or even have) a YouTube account.

The new YouTube app does not allow you to keep that same list of Favorites.

Double tap home button, swipe over a couple times and the volume slider is there, sadly it pauses the video that was playing, but at least there is one option that doesn't require you to use the physical volume keys.

Oh wow I feel really silly now. Totally FORGOT about that option! Once the iPad version comes along I will just 4 finger swipe up to get to the volume slider. Thank you for reminding me!!

That's not at all what "universal binary" means...

On OS X it means PPC and Intel binary, with less and less support for PPC the term is not as common anymore.

When speaking iOS, a Universal app is optimized to run on all iOS devices—itʼs essentially an iPhone app and an iPad app built as a single binary.

Unfortunately the "not available on this platform" issue is becoming a real pain with Youtube, and this app of course does not alleviate it.

If you don't want your video seen on a mobile device you might as well forget about putting it on Youtube at all.

Michael

Actually all the videos I've tried which would not play in Apple's app do just fine in this one.

No, this is more like Google+, I wonder if Kevin Rose designed this app.

Android version is similar to their mobile web site that you can access via Safari.

Looks pretty much identical to the Android phone app to me. Minus the offline video preload.
When did you last see it?

That's because there's no api for background video. Only for background audio.

Yep and that's what's needed.
Have you ever used the default youtube app? It just works

I've tried with Tom Waits "drunk on the moon" (album version with cd cover as video)...it works on my mac, but doesn't appear on my iPhone...even with the new youtube app :(

Why did you even read the article then?

it's there just not activated yet. it seems that it will use external apps with in the map app, which really excites me as i feel that's the start of some really great cross app apis

Well the interface is open for developers, so public transportation can be implemented from third part developers.
Google Maps already has it so why wait for third party developers? If third party developers do some great innovations, great. But for right now, I'll take my Google Maps.

Sharing to Facebook will probably not work until iOS 6 w/ FB integration.
Why? I have used apps that share to FB for years.

If it's written specifically for the iOS 6 FB integration, it shouldn't have been released yet, or it should say that certain features are only available with 6.0 and later. "Easy sharing to Facebook" is in the product description, and it says it's compatible with iOS 4.3 and above with no caveats. Right now, it looks like a bug, not a "feature to come."

Same here, any ideas?

It seems...airplay video support has not been implemented. I don't know how people says this is a superior version...doesn't work in the background, no airplay support, ads. Yeah, it has facebook integration, but it doesn't work.. Hope they improve it

You forgot that you also can't change the quality of a video, can't view the top rated comments, can't click links in the comment sections (or video description), annotations embedded in the movie (generally used to link to another movie or subscribe) still don't work, and I have no clue what order my Channels are listed in - since it's not by most recent upload, alphabetically, or by when I subscribed (a real joy when you're subscribed to a hundred + channels).

Then, of course, there's the whole other side of Youtube... for those of us with videos, there's no way to track your own or go into Analytics.

Sorry, I expected MUCH more from Google. If they want to release their own app, then it should be able to do as much (if not more) then by viewing the page via Safari.

...but at least we have ads.
