Offering people a choice of carriers is very cool. Even better, an indication of who the next carrier will be exactly. Apple: take note.

It's certainly not in a new category of any kind, but calling it an iphone clone is lame -- the iphone may have started the revolution, but it doesn't own it.

That wont ever happen. I read this is another forum.

For everyone that's waiting for AT&T to get anything other than an iPhone you're sort of missing the reality of what's really going on. If you've noticed, AT&T has yet to receive a single other high-end phone other than the iPhone. This is entirely because of AT&T's relationship with Apple. Not only does AT&T give iPhone users special privileges (early upgrades to new iPhones, etc.), but they also only choose to advertise the iPhone and not anything else (they also subsidized the price greater than they subsidize the price of other devices so as to continue to keep giving the iPhone a sales advantage). They've even declined other products that would essentially compete with the iPhone.

As a result of this relationship pretty much every company has just decided to stop supporting AT&T in the realm of high end smartphones and if you're waiting to receive anything other than an iPhone my guess is that you'll be waiting for a long time because no one is showing any signs of giving AT&T any support whatsoever. When companies are choosing to give T-Mobile support (a smaller carrier) over a larger carrier that tells you a hell of a lot. Hell, even Sprint got a decent Android device.

You have a better chance of the iPhone going to other carriers before seeing high end smartphones going to AT&T courtesy of how they've treated all the cell phone manufacturers and continue to worship Apple.

As expected, no love for NZ. I wonder whether we'll see a "better" set of frequencies in a later model (I need WCDMA 850).

I'm not that impressed, Google voice and the notifications bar are the only things that are attractive about android. The new hardware is still ugly, like all android phones, minus the original hero, and the software doesn't take advantage of the increased hardware specs as much as it should, ie. it's not as fast as it should be.

I'm glad the phone exists because I love to see Apple challenged.

But past that I'm begining to realize that while I love Google's services I don't much care for the style of their design. I don't think this would be the phone for me even if I couldn't have an iPhone.

I'm sure it appeals to a lot of people, but I'm not one of them.

But like I said, I hope it does well.

Agreed.

Googles products and services sometimes seem like devices designed by geeks not taking into account the mainstream consumer. Look at how sparse their landing page is for the phone. If i'm an average consumer and looking for comparative information and illustrations, especially as it pertains to the iPhone, there is none. It's a bunch of text on a page that the average person can't even decipher. Apple just seems incredibly more....'elegant' if you will.

If this was Microsoft with the exact same initiative, it would be ripped to shreds on this board. Competition IS great, and that means from whomever. For instance, the ZUNE is actually a rather nice device in its current iteration, but due to the perceived infallible superiority or the iPod, and the tech worlds reluctance to praise any other competitor other than Google, it doesn't stand a chance.

If the battery cover drops off after 3-5 days of use will the owners still claim its the best phone EVAR! and sneer at the iPhone as if it fell out of a horse's rear?

Will the pundits claim it will be a failure within a year with "only" 100k units sold?

Will its anemic app store be praised for its disorganized chaotic collection of apps that must be purchased with a Google account that 99% of people don't have?

What will happen to the Android "clones" now that Google is competing directly with them, and getting the best OS and features/design for themselves?

I think your head is rammed a bit too far up Apple's arse mate.

This phone looks a lot better than a lot of the other phones out there at the moment. It's just a shame that it's not a flip phone.

iPhone 3GsII. Even faster than the 3Gs, 10x more hype. Seriously, the iPhone needs a real makeover, and I don't see Apple willing to give it a chance since if it goes wrong, their reputation will be ruined.

Oh, just like when Apple scrapped the iPod Mini (which at the time was the BEST selling iPod) and made the Nano?

What sorta makeover are you looking for?

They have sold millions of phones. I don't seem them changing anything about the phone just for the sake of change.

I'm curious to see how reliable the Verizon network really is once the majority of their customer base is using data hungry phones like the iPhone or the Nexus. I'm not a big AT&T fan, but I do understand that their network is suffering due in part to the majority of their customer base using the iPhone. The iPhone consumes more data than any other phone on the market, and no other network carries the burden having that phone has their biggest seller.

Verizon is an AWESOME service right now BECAUSE it doesn't have iPhone. I'm willing to bet that once the playing field is even, and a ton of people jump off the AT&T network and move to Verizon, you're going to see vast improvements on AT&T's end.

Before I make any switches, I'm gonna wait for the masses to jump ship first. I want to see if the Verizon network gets bogged down in a similar fashion. I'd love to see everyone migrate to Verizon because of how bad AT&T has been lately, and in turn free up the AT&T network completely. Everyone to Verizon!

Verizon is awesome because it never got the iPhone and has had the benefit of two years' worth of learning from AT&T's difficulties. Easy to be awesome when your competition's already blazed the trail for you.

Unlocked doesn't mean much when it really still only works on T-Mo. Unless you're some masochist who enjoys AT&T's EDGE speeds.

Not even that psyched for the Verizon version, their smartphone plans are terribly priced and the phone becomes even less unlocked thanks to their network setup.

I wonder if Verizon will move google functionality and add Microsoft Bing to the home page, like it does with other Verizon phones?

That's a lot of stuff on the very top line on that phone! Kind of PC-ish.

Although I don't own an iPhone, I guess I'm used to seeing the perfectly square, artistically done icons, four across, four up...

Not prejudiced just when you see Nexus One, it just looks empty in some areas and crowded in others.

And those critiquing T-Mobile, sure it's a small carrier with not as many subscribers as att/verizon, it has a different 3G GSM technology, etc., but it has served me well here in the Mid Atlantic area where I live. While I am not a worldly traveler to speak intelligently of whether it has spotty service across the nation or across my state even or in rural areas in my state etc, it has served my needs without fail and my plan is not to shabby either. To outright dismiss T-Mobile with prejudice does a disservice to those of us who subscribe and are happy with teh company and with what we have. ;)

The iPhone is still the sexiest handset out there, hands-down.

Don't need a lot of storage for apps. A lot of them are web-based.

Tell that to my games.

Anyway, what a disappointing phone. Horrible storage. Nice screen, though.

I'm sure all the iPhone haters will declare it as the messiah, but what an earlier poster said is correct, it's an iPhone clone with few apps (also low app storage) and a disorganized UI.

never going to happen.

You're probably right given what Apple has done to their laptops.

I don't get it though. My iPhone can barely last a full workday. By the ride home it needs to be in the car charger.

Our company is looking to do enterprise apps. Given the battery and the onerous Apple store method of distribution, the Nexus looks worth investigating. Maybe I won't have to learn Obj-C after all.

Time for the iPhone to play catch up!

Apple is behind the curve now.

Let's see

Google fails to address app storage issue with Droid and Android 2.0
http://androidandme.com/2009/10/new...app-storage-issue-with-droid-and-android-2-0/
 And that's from an Android fan site.

Except that if it's a large app with data, not all of the data is stored in the primary memory.

Also, from another thread (and this one too):

Q: "Why only 512MB for app storage?" In a future software release, we'll enable encryption for storage on SD card.

The new 3D user interface is pretty nice. And it has voice input throughout the whole phone and not just for some specific application which even seems to work very nicely. Dictating emails and sms will be lots of fun. Not to mention that it is only half the price of an iPhone 3GS 32GB. Seems really to be not just a smart- but a Superphone! :)

Other than lack of triband 3G and small built-in storage (which is still where apps can run exclusively for now), the hardware spec looks very nice. But to me, it's the software that matters more. Having used Droid, I just can't get myself warm up to Android OS. It's certainly one of two platforms I would choose (the other being Palm WebOS) if I had to stop using iPhone, but it just looks and feels clunky to me.

Don't need a lot of storage for apps. A lot of them are web-based.

Also, as was stated in the launch event:

Q: Why 512MB for app storage only?

A: They store apps in the internal ROM and not on the SD card now, for piracy reasons, but they will offer an upgrade soon for installing apps on the SD card.

So it would appear that apps will be able to be stored on removable storage soon enough, making the inbuilt storage limitation a thing of the past.

It isn't going to be an isue soon. What's the next complaint going to be? :p

LoL behind this 'iphone killer'? haha probably not.

Offering people a choice of carriers is very cool. Even better, an indication of who the next carrier will be exactly. Apple: take note.

Lets not forget that ATT and every other carrier around the world had to change their backend to accommodate some of the features (like visual voice mail). And the fact that it's Verizon. Trust me, talks will break down again when Verizon CEO Ivan Seidenberg will demand that jobs slap a big check mark on the back of the phone and demand removal of the app store and itunes in favor of the Verizon media store haha.

That Apple didn't make it, and Steve didn't personally bless it. Honestly, I love my Macs, love my iPods, but I'm not blind to the fact that there are some great products out there that aren't made by Apple.

The Android platform is one of them.

Oh I don't know, maybe the other two issues I mentioned?

Liiiiiiiike.. piss-poor internal memory and an inelegant UI?

And no apps?

And developers not wanting to develop apps, because they can't make money?

I'm sure I can think of more.

Apple will be releasing iPhone OS 4.0 and a tablet that (might) dominate the education industry, by the end of this month. We'll see how much leverage android has then.
