As it has been pointed out, the scroll ball is the EXACT same piece of hardware found on CrackBerrys.

For navigating links on a dense webpage, thank you high-res screen, the trackball makes web usage a breeze. It's also great for gaming, apps, and quick one-handed navigation tasks!
Except that its memory architecture makes creating games for it that you can sell for real money rather problematic.

But Google has to say *something* puffed in the absence of anything truly unique or revolutionary. "Superphone" sure sounds better than "rebadged HTC."

Rebadged???? Have you bothered to look at the pictures. It says HTC right there on the back! It also has a Google logo on the back which pragmatically isn't too much different than the "intel inside" stickers on the vast majority of PCs with Intel processors inside. It means Google/Intel threw some money at this device to bring defray the costs of bringing it to market. A bit more classy though.

As for "superphone" .... no worse that Intel relabeling SMT as "hyperthreading". Intel makes up new marketing words for tech that has standard names all the time.

512MB flash and a 4GB MicroSD? So everyone who buys this thing needs to spend money on extra storage? Looks like Sandisk, etc doesn't even make a 32GB MicroSD yet and a 16GB is $74.99 from JR.com. Meaning the NexusOne is about $600 with no contract or $255 for a "16GB device" with a 2yr contract, where as the comparative iPhone 3GS is $500 and $200 respectively. I understand it has some cool new hardware components but some people now complain about how expensive an iPhone can be...

So I buy an iPhone with no contract at $600 for 16MB, but if I want to but if I want a 32MB, what do I do? Why, I pay more money! Surprise, surprise-- you pay more for more storage. At least w/ Google you can upgrade the memory without having to buy a whole new phone.

It really is like having blinders on when it comes to Apple people.

If Apple was so concerned about their 'reputation', they would have never released the original iPhone (remember all the predictions back then?), or the upcoming tablet/slate thing.

Also, although this definitely looks like a nice phone, what is so 'new' about it? There's nothing on it we haven't seen before, just beefier specs (which is not necessarily a bad thing mind you.) But it's definitely not some daring leap into the unknown...

iPhone 3GsII. Even faster than the 3Gs, 10x more hype. Seriously, the iPhone needs a real makeover, and I don't see Apple willing to give it a chance since if it goes wrong, their reputation will be ruined.

Google could do something 'new' like this since this is their first venture into the mobile market (no, ignore Android altogether), they have no reputation to keep hold of.

  • Google does not need to be on the board to know what the iPhone is or can do, they will definitely have bought a few.
  • Standard $529 with 4GB on an SD card, so it looks cheaper. Smart, reminds me of the NeXT Cube which looked more expensive that PC/Mac/Sun solutions until you fitted those with the same functionality. But it still worked marketing-wise to establish an 'expensive' label on the NeXT. So, how much for 8GB to get in the range of the minimum iPhone memory?
  • Still a broken memory architecture, you cannot put apps and such on the SD card. No room for serious apps or games.
  • In a different league than the iPhone but might still do well. Still, would you pay out of pocket $529 knowing this is the first release and you can expect it to be followed pretty soon by something that addresses the most serious problems?
  • How is the music/video interface?

I wouldn't consider 2.1 a first release, nor something that is made by a manufacturer that's been making Android devices for over a year now.

None of this wil really matter after the next iPhone update. Not that it really matters now.

Looks interesting and probably isn't a bad product. Will be easy for many users to switch. The consumer will ultimately decide. Definitely could catch up to iPhone, but very doubtful it'll have that much momentum within 5-6 months, by the time iPhone 4 comes out. Doubtful long term too. Apple still has iLoyalty like none other that is nearly 10 years in the making, starting with iPods...but that cannot pull them through forever.

I'm Apple loyal, so I'm probably biased. For now, iPhone does what I need it to do, even if it is slightly behind the curve. Would be nice if Apple did an 8 month upgrade as opposed to a yearly upgrade.

If I do switch to Google's phone or a Blackberry, it will definitely be a pain not having mobile me/having to switch all my accounts to a new email address.

You'd have no other option. WebOS, RIM, and OSX are locked down on their respective hardware and WM is a joke. Maybe, and that's a big maybe, when WM7 is released sometime in 2010 or 2011 companies like Motorola will have another option of OS to put on their phones. Until then they're stuck with Android or WM, and Android is just as good as OSX and light years better than WM plus it's open so they pay little to no licensing fees.
Unless they want the Google apps which are Google proprietary and not free. You know, you have 'Android' and 'Android with Google'.

Kinda expensive in the UK! I'll get it after the Apple conference, so I can see what the situation is witht he iSlate/iPhone

Apparently we are getting the extra 2.5% tax added on too! Arn please add this to your report if you can :)

Yeah, that only happens yearly. With the same-old w/ Apple, it won't take long for Google to surpass Apple in even more areas of technology. Maybe in another 4 or 5 years, you guy will finally get a camera with flash. lol Oh, but let's let Jobs set the pace. ;-)

attack of the clones

I find it amazing how original the iphone is and how the droid, storm, nexus ..... are little more then copies

home screen looks ugly to me, especially that top bar. But still will like to see how it performs

Did you mean "Know Thy Self" instead of "Know They Self"?

Hope you didn't pull the trigger on that yet!

The OS software is 2.1, the hardware is 1.0 and still based on a broken memory architecture that is ages old. I have no idea what version the Google apps are on Android, but 1.something I guess.

They can offer it cheaper because they say "4GB card (expandable to 32GB)". Very nice marketing ploy, that sounds like 32GB for the price of 4GB and it is an old trick. They don't tell you that card's memory cannot be used for the same things as the internal 8GB in an iPhone.

Still, it might do basic stuff very well and be a good competitor in the smartphone business. And if it is 'good-enough' and the market does not demand sophisticated apps, the memory architecture might not be a serious drawback.

Sooooooo what!
It is a multi media phone. Big a** deal. The iphone will never leave my hands. Alive or dead.

It is so easy though to make an iphone rip-off once the standard has been done by another company. All one has to do is buy a rebranded phone for HTC, LG or whoever. Pop in Android and start all the BS about being an iphone competitor. I hate the latter with a passion.
Every time a new cell phone drops the vendor always makes sure it is touted as an iphone competitor so the uninitiated can be f***** in the head with the outrages idea that the new kid on the block is JUST LIKE THE IPHONE BUT A LITTLE BIT BETTER. LOL!!!!
Just look at this lead story. Did Google spend millions and years developing their Nexus phone? NO! They got a rebranded phone from some outfit in Asia, threw in Android(I'm so scared!) and abracadabra. THE NEXUS ONE.
And all the cells phone now are doing it up with Android and a flashy UI. Get out of my face. They don't even know the ins and outs of the Android OS. Just that it is the new kid to help them sell their disposable a** cells.

And when Apple finally puts an OLED screen in its screen, you'll be saying what again?

That's the Apple way. Given free license to call their inventions "originals", even when competitors come up w/ new technology in thier device that Apple does't have. Once invented by others, Apple's allowed to copy it, only you can't point that out and STILL claim their their device is THE original.

Nexus NOne

Since the beginning when I first saw this phone I knew it was nothing new. Don't get wrong on this. It's a good phone and all but nothing groundbreaking here. Blogoshere did not all the hoopla on this and made it look like a revolutionary product of the decade.

I agree I am Apple fan but this phone is nothing compared to iPhone. Apple too can release a phone every 2 months but Apple look for innovation, quality over quantity!

:)

Makes no difference.

Whatever captures the Average User portion of the market (the bulk of the market), wins. And the best devices are the ones that are geared for the Average User.

I don't see Apple relinquishing this portion of the market anytime soon. The iPhone has the most to offer, in the easiest possible package - both for consumers and developers. Done.

OLED screen isn't ground breaking? Turn-by-turn directions isn't ground breaking? Having voice activated search isn't ground breaking? Allowing you to simultaneously run up to six applications and toggle between them with an on-screen menu isn't ground breaking? Even bassic things like having a removable battery and flash for the camera isn't ground breaking (available on phones for years now!).

Of course not! It wasn't invented by Apple. C'mon, take your blinders off, good man!!! :-D

android problem is lack of apps, of devs making money out of their apps.

apple won't do major improvements to their hardware, just enough but not much because they work alot on their software. os 4.0 will probably be full of goodies and meanwhile the "gang" comes up with 10 MP with 100W flash and improved maps and and...nothing

apple has nothing to worry about but still it's good the "gang" is struggling

Apple is screwed

...if the NexusOne is nearly as good as the iPhone.. The multiple carrier status will be quite an advantage, especially since Verizon has considerably more coverage than AT&T (At least in Metropolitan Los Angeles, they do. I had Verizon and experienced one dropped call, because the battery died. On AT&T I don't even get signal at home. No signal when I lived in the middle of [flat] Burbank, no signal while living in Pasadena, no signal at friend's house in Glendale.)

I can already hear Jobs saying how beautiful an OLED screen is on the iPhone in my head. :)

Only then will any issues with OLED screens be null and void in the opinion of the Apple faithful.
