I knew it. It is steve jobs's plan. He knew google would not make navigation for ios. So he made apple own map to draw google out to make the map with navigation for iOS. Then apple will take apple map project out. Clever!!!!

I've been a longtime user and fan of Navigon's GPS app. But with Apple Maps, and now Google Maps both providing free turn-by-turn directions on iOS, it may be quite difficult for them to convince people to pay for their app.

Google Maps looks fantastic. In fact, all of Google's recent offerings look great. Maps, Gmail, Google+, Search....their development team is on a roll. Google Voice is the only app that still retains that old Google look.

I will use this because I have to because there is no public transport or points of interest in Apple maps in my area, but I dont trust google with my data. I dont like the nag screens to link it to a google account (which I dont have). I dont like the "open in chrome", when I dont have chrome installed on my iphone. I dont like the purposefully different look and feel to iOS. I guess google is making a point here, but instead of tempting me to become a google user, it just makes the app feel disjointed from the phone.

My summary - google maps content is second to none and for now necessary, but the user interface and business practices are a pain to suffer.

Yes, Google did have at least some control over the content and features of the iOS 5 Maps app. Their refusal to agree to adding turn-by-turn unless Apple agreed to integrate Latitude and ADS into iOS was the contract renewal deal breaker.

Want ads in your phone OS? I don't.

Then you should get rid of your iPhone (ever hear of iAds?).

For those trying alternate methods, I can confirm that the following will not work if the original method does not work:

1. Finding related apps under Google Earth (or another Google App). While you will be able to find Google Maps, you will not be able to download it.

2. Opening the link from this thread. Same as above.

If it's not working via one method for you, it's unlikely another will work either.

Los Angeles, CA.

Tried downloading first time around 8:30 and was unsuccessful. Been trying ever since then with no success.

Yeah the APP is gone/pulled. Didn't take long did it...

True. Also, Google Maps for iOS has turn-by-turn navigation (without collecting a licensing feefrom Apple) so that argument seems less plausible than ever.

Only after Apple dropped Google Maps and built their own turn-by-turn systems.

In case you didn't notice, Apple maps with Turn-by-turn was kind of a game changer.

What Google did before it came out and after have no bearing on each other.

Before Google held all the cards. Now they have no choice but to put turn-by-turn in if they want to compete. The rules of the game changed and you expect Google to not adjust their plans accordingly?

I could be wrong, but it seems to me Apple is allowing downloads outside of the US first. Can anyone confirm this?

edit: nevermind...dling now in Florida.

What the hell? I try to download it and it tells me "The item you tried to buy is no longer available"

Midnight in Boston and still no luck downloading. Hoping to test it out, but as many people have stated, default is a major issue. Seems as if when driving, Apple Maps is the better of the two because of the whole default part, but in an urban area, Google Maps would be better because of the transit.

Ok first of all, why is there no iPad support. That is not ok at this point for a major release from a major corporation. Second. Lag. Also not ok. It shows how unpolished of an experience this really is. Beyond this, there is a huge lack of setting adjustment. 3d imagery is sub par as far as modern 3d maps. And no satellite 3d. Apparently you have to leave google maps for that and go to earth. Overall this app is very unpolished and as far as I'm concerned, it's no better than apple maps in turn of functionality and usability. And as far as the quality of the MAPS themselves, I'm surprisingly underwhelmed. The data on this app is not the same as it is on my nexus device.

YouTube was released without iPad and iPhone 5 support for more than 2 months. So be patient. I'd rather have an iPhone only Google Maps first than to tolerate Apple Maps or Google Maps web app for more time.

Where do you live? My Apple Maps app gives me turn-by-turn directions.

Gary

The guy you responded to had an iPhone 4, which won't give you audible turn-by-turn directions because of the lack of Siri. A ridiculous requirement that Google has done a great job of sidestepping.
