It may be good but the fact that I have to pull over to the side of the road and input an address is a deal killer. i would rather use a flawed Apple Maps product with Siri on the go.

You can use Siri to speak the address after selecting the field in Google Maps. Plus, they'll probably add Google Voice search to it eventually, at least before Apple lets you specify a default mapping app.

Still can't download it in California.

BTW, does anyone think it's not an accident that it doesn't show up first with a direct search for 'Google Maps'?

Even looking at all Google apps, it's last in the list.
If I was paranoid and Google, I'd assume it's not an accident. :) :)

This whole Apple maps mess has made everyone pickier, I think.

Yeah, it has. Though that's bound to happen when you replace a mature platform with what was at the time a beta 1 release. People tend to get a little bitchy over stuff like that.

Though I have been playing with Apple Maps since I upgraded my iPad to iOS6 a few days ago. It's improved a goodly bit since I first played with it. I wouldn't put it up there with Google Maps just yet, but it's...yeah...it's decent now.

Hallelujah! You really have to applaud Google, BAILING Apple out from its WORST customer and public relations DISASTER in recent memory.

Google could have let Apple HANG itself with its own mistakes, but rather showed enough RESPECT to iOS users to give them a CHOICE. Would Apple have done this for ANYONE, let alone Google? Of course not!

That alone shows which company is truly more pro-consumer rather than anti-competition.

Now if only Apple could take that SMALL step in doing what Android does, which is ALLOW its users to CHOOSE their OWN default apps, that would be a BRILLIANT gesture of good faith to all iOS users. Let's just hope Tim Cook follows Steve Jobs' advice and "does the right thing".

Every single app ever released on the App Store doesn't show up in search correctly for quite some time. And every single app takes time to propagate which is why not every one can download it right now. None of this is new.

I've been getting the "temporarily unavailable" for about a half hour now. I'm on the west coast.

I noticed that the update date listed for the app is December 13. Today is the 12th. Did someone at Apple release it a day early?

Maybe the "unavailability" has more to do with the fact that MILLIONS of people want the app at the same time? :)

Now, how soon can we make the Google Maps app the DEFAULT Maps app in iOS?

Mark

Edit: I was finally able to download it!

Well I downloaded it and played around with it for a few minutes, and it's just not the same as before. Contacts aren't listed, so you have to save them manually, street view is weird to get to. That's all about I see, unfortunately Apple's implementation of Google Maps was better, but Google releasing their own app sure does make it easy for Google to implement changes quickly.

I personally have nothing wrong with Apple Maps because 99% of the time I use a GPS unit.

Just click the link on main rumors post from your iOS device and it will take you to the app in the App Store. Downloads fast too!

WELCOME TO FREE TURN BY TURN VOICE DIRECTONS!

Yep, just tried it on my iPhone 4 and it worked flawlessly. Thanks Google. :)

Moving Apple's Maps to a folder on the back page on my phone.

It's how the App Store search works.

The App has only just been released, so it'll be a while before it shows up in all places.

Even when it does, the App Store weights search results based on the App's popularity.

The same thing has happened with other App launches like YouTube (although that's Google too).

It kinda emphasises one of the scenarios where the new "card" layout for the App Store is undesirable.
