honestly i am bored of the iphone and i would like a change, iphone needs to change its interface in 4.0 next year

Yes. They should make it so left swiping moves things right, and pinch zooming is reversed. That would be less boring.

Or they could just stick to what works.

I agree. Google is like the new Microsoft but free haha.

They are making a lot of the same mistakes with their mobile platform that Microsoft made and it is becoming very fragmented and a game between them and 3rd party manufacturers! They may be working on future versions of Android obviously, but it will not be anything drastically different from the current. They can't even really keep up as it is.

There are a lot of parallels between them and Microsoft. The big difference is that Google isn't trying to protect an OEM lock-in monopoly with everything else they do, they are just trying to infiltrate any and everything they can to make ad money and gain data. But that is the only reason they are entering all these new areas, and guess what? They don't have experience in ANY of these areas! Also, their motivation is strictly ad and data money, not the end user, or the 3rd parties.

Google is turning into a mess!

Let them and Microsoft fight over trying to do everything to protect their monopolistic revenue while Apple begins to dominate all markets with their vastly superior products, decades of experience and knowledge, and one complete end to end package of hardware and software coupled with a seamless ecosystem! :)

When will Microsoft learn that their license the software and don't make the hardware model success was a fluke that they have been trying to keep from falling apart ever since. The fact that they are imitating Apple in virtually every way including their software/hardware business model is proof that they realize what is going on. And now Google is making the same mistakes. You'd think they would research or know a bit about the history of the computer industry and how things really went down.

You don't know what you're talking about do you?

As more and more android, iphone, and any other smartphone that can access the net are sold, Google will increase their revenue through mobile ads.

Actually, the Droid is closing in on 1 million sold devices. Anymore unsubstantiated remarks?

Be careful - facts like that have been known to cause heads to explode on MacRumors. Some people have constructed very fragile alternate realities where Microsoft is dead (;)) and Apple is supreme. Break their bubbles with facts, and it could have drastic consequences!

Anecdote :) - I went to a Thanksgiving dinner in the city, and at one point the conversation hit on a current YouTube video (the Adam Lambert kiss). Three people with Droids brought it up and shared it, to much banter and amusement.

The 4 people with Iphones had one bar and Edge. They watched the video on Droids.

Nice phone on sucky network == sucky phone.

Haha, anecdotes are fun, especially around the holidays.

We had a discussion going at the dinner table about who requires more training; police officers or state highway patrolmen.

My uncle whipped out his iPhone and began tapping away. I pulled out my G1 and asked it a question. That's my favorite thing to do, asking my phone questions and getting a proper google search. We passed around the Android phone and asked it silly questions. It's impressive when an 85 year old woman can search for things on a phone with the touch of one button...

You mean the Adam Lambert Awesome Gyrating clip? ;) Yeah, that one's bookmarked. :D

Nice phone on sucky network == sucky phone.

The unfortunate truth. If Apple really wants to upgrade their iPhone, all they really have to do is switch carriers.

I feel sorry for the people in the US who are stuck on AT&T. But here in vancouver (and Canada in general) the iphone has come to multiple carriers.. Rogers, Telus, Bell, and now Virgin.

I'm guessing it's just a matter of time it's not exclusive to AT&T

Especially when you realize the iphone was released before the recession, which means unemployment was not in the double digits..

The Droid doing well in these market conditions proves that it's a very good phone. Who knows what the numbers would be like if consumer spending didn't take a huge hit.

OH no!! Reason and logic being applied!

inb4 GOOGLE IS DYING LOL!

oh wait, too late.

Stop the press! Are you saying that MS is locking up software to work on only one platform!!??

Funny, 'cuz the Droid owners at the dinner did the same thing - with Google Maps. Very cute to just ask "where is xxx" and see the route - and seamlessly switch to street view so that you can recognize the place when you arrive.

In Silicon Valley, it's surprising how quickly Android has become "new and cool", and the Iphone is now "last generation" (put it in the history drawer with the StarTAC and other misfit toys).

I usually find good insight from those who work and live in Silicon Valley. I lived out that way last year and drove through twice a week. It is amazing to see all the expensive toys...

P.S. I miss my StarTAC, that was a SOLID little device!

In another interesting tidbit, the "trusted source" claims that the Android operating system seen so far in such devices as the original T-Mobile G1 through to the new Motorola Droid is not the "real" Android. Exactly what, however, the "real" Android offers is unknown at this time.

I thought Android was an open platform? If so, then the only way the current phones could not be the "real" Android would be if they didn't implement everything the whole Android platform is capable of doing.

Did I miss something?

I suppose that a "real" Google Android phone call will go like this:
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "Call Harry's Plumbing Supply."
Phone speaking back to owner: Are you sure you want Harry's Plumbing Supply? Ace Hardware has been price checked to be 2.6% lower cost than Harry's?
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "No, I'm not interested in Ace Hardware, connect me to Harry's Plumbing Supply."
Phone speaking back to owner: Well okay, but there is a Sears store closer to your current GPS location. They offer plumbing supplies and Craftsman tools also. Would you like to try there instead?
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "No, please dial Harry's Plumbing Supply. No more advertising."
Phone speaking back to owner: Okay, okay, however a quick scan of Harry's Plumbing Supply yellow page ad, shows that he are now closed. You really should consider calling Ace or Sears, they will give you excellent service and save you money. Which would you prefer?
Owner speaking into his "real" Android phone: "Dial the mutherfuc*in' number I requested and stop with all the ads!!!"
Phone speaking back to owner: Okay, okay! Harry the cheapskate that won't spend a few bucks advertising on Google coming right up, but don't complain to me about his service or prices.
***phone rings***
Harry answering his phone: "Hello?"
Owner speaking to Harry: "Hi Harry the wife said to invite you and Margaret over for steaks on Saturday. Can you hear me Harry...? There's suddenly a lot of static right now. Can you hear me, Harry? Harry, are you there...?"

the iPhone 3G was released in July 2008. the recession began December 2007. i'm no economist, but consumer spending is up compared to where it was a year ago.

It seems to make sense that Google would eventually integrate services like Voice and Wave into the core of Android. I would think that would still be the Android everyone uses and all their third party hardware makers sell.

It'd be cool if I get a GPhone without a plan though. Just use it as a Wifi phone.

Apple *HAS* to shake AT&T, or the iPhone growth will stagnate.

For what it's worth, I was at a Best Buy mobile site yesterday (girlfriend was buying a Droid so I was hovering around for a good 30+ minutes) and an older woman said she wanted to buy her husband a phone with web access. The BB rep suggested the iPhone and the woman said something to the effect of hearing the iPhone has bad coverage and drops a lot of calls. The BB rep actually agreed that to be the case, went on to say how she hears a lot of complaints about the iPhone from customers, and sold her a Droid instead. Another customer was returning her iPhone 3GS because it dropped too many calls. I'm not sure what she got instead as she was just returning the equipment.

What you said about Google is felt by many about Apple.

The obvious difference being that Apple is extending their products and services without leaving their core competencies behind. When I think about companies overextending themselves, I think of MS trying to become a news channel or Google producing hardware. It just strikes me as going too far outside what they're good at.

Actually, the Droid is closing in on 1 million sold devices. Anymore unsubstantiated remarks?

Umm... how much evidence do you require exactly?

BTW, I'm not an Apple fanboy. I don't take any joy in those news stories. I have no interest in seeing any product fail, but it would seem you're cherry-picking your Android-related news. Even a casual glance at the headlines shows it's not doing as well as hoped.

the iPhone 3G was released in July 2008. the recession began December 2007. i'm no economist, but consumer spending is up compared to where it was a year ago.

I was talking about the original iPhone (June 30th 2007), which was released before a 54% drop in the S&P 500. And the peak of the stock market was in September 2007.

Now if you wanna compare the 3G, which was released in July 2008, the S&P 500 was at 1260. The bottom of the S&P 500 was at 683.

That means after the release of the iPhone 3G, the stock market dropped another 45%.

All those statistics work in favor of the iPhone, and the same factors are the reason the Droid has not had higher sales numbers.

And Consumer spending might be slightly up since this time last year, but it's considerably lower than what it was during the original iPhone release (which was what I was talking about)

why would you compare the second generation iPhone, to the first gen Droid, it does not make a good comparison as the droid was a NEW product, and the iPhone 3G had one complete year of advertising due to the 2G release.

But my main point is that since the release of the iPhone 2G, and the 3G, there has been considerable wealth lost in the stock market. And there was more unemployed people in the USA in November than any other time in the last 25 years. If you expect to see strong sales numbers in these economic conditions, you might be disappointed.

I'm glad Apple didn't do that.

Seconded.

Apple seems to have a knack for success in a whole range of markets, from computers to media players, to phones, software, etc. And it looks like they're about to change the tablet game as well

Actually I know exactly what I am talking about. They can have all the ad revenue they want, but if their platform is fragmented, sucks, and dies like WM then that doesn't quite serve their purpose well now does it?

inb4 GOOGLE IS DYING LOL!

Stop the press! Are you saying that MS is locking up software to work on only one platform!!??

I was talking about Microsoft's fluke of a success with their business model and how they locked in OEMs to Windows. All they have been doing ever since is trying desperately to stop their lock-in monopoly from falling apart, whether it be by illegally stopping competitors, making other crappy products to invade threatening competition and so on. Nice try though!

Apple's model that you are mocking is actually what the people are CHOOSING and praising, Windows never has been a choice, it is a decision that is made for people because OEMs are locked into it!
