Wow Google WTF?

I always preorder a new Pixel every year. This year was the first time I told myself to wait for final real user reviews, and I'm glad I didn't buy it now.

200 charging cycles and that's it? LOL seriously. While Apple and Samsung say 1,000+ cycles.

Does that mean there's some issue with the [H]ardware there not telling us?

Hard pass on this phone for now, until it's out and people have had it for a while and report any issues or not. I don't need to be a guinea pig for Google's hardware.

The android authority article says the top of the line Samsungs hit 2000 cycles and the Oppo and One+ hit 1600 cycles. And Google is asking for the same amount as those phones.

It's pretty shameful they start to throttle these new phones at 200 cycles.

Google lowers battery capacity, charging and phone performance. The previous page has the android authority article where they explain it further.
“This software will adjust the battery’s maximum voltage in stages that start at 200 charge cycles and continue gradually until 1000 charge cycles“

So it is not in full strength throttling mode as soon as it hits 200 cycles. I would like to learn what are the “stages” first before making any assumptions.

I was thinking of buying the 10 or 10 Pro, but yeah, after I read that article I'm out. I'm sure by next year, with the 11 series, Google will fix this, because I'm sure it will affect their sales big time with the tech enthusiast crowd.

At least they're honest about this upfront. Apple wasn't. They will need to step up their game in the battery department. It feels incredible naive for such a big company to do this. Is it really that hard to do what Samsung does (2.000 cycles battery endurance)?

And the only reason I was possibly thinking of upgrading from my Pixel 9 Pro XL was specifically for more efficiency and longer battery life in the 10 Pro series. LOL that's out now.

My current phone works absolutely flawless right now there's no reason for me to upgrade especially with this news.

Not saying I won't get a 10 series but I'm going to wait a month or so see what real users report.

Guess that article really kicked the hornet's nest, huh?

Now, to be fair...

Google also says their phone will maintain 80% capacity for 1000 cycles. It will just start charging slower and limit maximum charge at 200 and continue to worsen from 200-1000, at which point it should be replaced.

The issue here is that you could have a Pixel with 200 cycles that still has 100% health, but the software will limit charging to 95% of capacity (just a guess) because it is trying to preserve the battery. I am just not sure how transparent it will be about what shenanigans it is doing. It makes sense to put some limits in to slow the degradation, but it seems arbitrary and wrong. Maybe it is super intelligent and calculating voltage and temperature and such to make an ideal charge limit, but I want some visibility into the machinations.

The issue here is that....
The issue unfortunately is that we are talking about Google and Pixel phones. The Pixel's have had a spotty track record with different types of hardware and performance issues in the past. We just don't know and can only go by what Google told Android Authority that after 200 cycles, charging performance will drop and battery capacity will drop as well.

Google needs to come out and explain in detail what's going on with a 200 cycle battery. Why are there still battery issues going back to the Pixel 4a? Have they considered hiring an engineer to fix the battery problems? Are they using inferior batteries that don't last as long as the competition?

They need a PR person to speak up and explain.

That indigo sure looks nice though haha .. I figure I bring some cheerful news

I like it.
Really like the Moonstone.

I can get a 10 Pro XL really cheap after trade-in and credits but I'm still leaning towards passing with hearing about the battery throttling and how much I'm loving the ZF7 and S25U. 10 Pro Fold is an absolute no go for me because I just think when all things are considered it's inferior overall to the ZF7 even if I do prefer some things about Pixel OS overall. Its been nearly a month with the ZF7 and I still can't get over how great this phone feels in hand. One thing I do love about the Pixel Foldables however, the interior screen isn't near as reflective as the Z Folds. I wish Samsung could tone down the gloss/sheen of the cover on the inner screen.

Then again this is kinda tough to ignore. $478 after trade in and $200 promo code and $300 in Google store credit earned 🤔🤔

Are you able to share the codes? I was trying to share my $150 discount and the person was not able to use it.
I don't know. You gave him the long, alphanumeric code from the email, not the link? I guess it does say it is your exclusive code.

Brian Tong formally from CNET did his video a couple days ago and showed off the Moonstone. It has a light blue tint with a touch of gray. Awesome color and I usually stick with porcelain. However I can't ignore the battery issue with 200 cycles.

I'm now actually considering the 6.7" OnePlus 13r which Amazon has on sale. That phone as a mid ranger has gotten awesome reviews.

Between Google's bait and switch trade-in value manipulation I mentioned earlier and now these battery shenanigans, think I'm going to pass on getting a 10PF and just ride out the year with my 9PF. Genuinely bummed as this was going to be my one phone upgrade for the year. Now if Samsung actually releases their tri-fold state-side, might be my first Samsung device in a long time..🤔;)

It's $499 through OnePlus also. Not bad at all.

I guess I would look at it like this.

If you are a person who keeps their phone for 3 years or more then it may be a good idea to skip the Pixel 10 series.

BUT....if you are like most people on this forum buying a new phone every year this really shouldn't affect you much. You would have about 6 months of lowered battery capacity and then you get rid of in trade or sale.

It is the most ridiculous idea to handicap something to prevent it from being handicapped. That is literally what Google is doing. Unless their batteries are inherently unstable I don't understand why you would do this instead of just let the battery age naturally.

There is also a possibility that people complain enough about the issue and updates the phone by removing the battery limiting software???

In any case this is a shoot yourself in the foot moment.

When Nexus phones were under $500 you could let this kind of stuff slide. Now with Google charging as much as Apple and Samsung they need to step up and over the years in my opinion they keep trying to save money on the hardware and charge a high price.

Google used to make really good mid range phones and it feels like they still haven't grown out of that mentality. I can't remember a Pixel release that didn't have some hardware failures. They need to start putting the best components in their phones and undercut the price with Apple and Samsung and do it for a few years straight with no hardware compromise. They are trying to be a top line competitor without leading the industry in hardware, just software. Google has always thought they can fix hardware problems with software and it has worked for them but there is a limit and Google needs to spend more on the hardware so it can catch up with their software.

I love Pixel phones a lot but the constant hardware compromises get tiring after a while specially when they raised the price equivalent to the competition and the competition doesn't have these issues. Pixel software makes up for a lot but in my experience I keep wondering what a s25ultra would be like running Pixel software. I wouldn't have that fantasy if Pixel hardware was as good or superior.

With their track record and constantly canceling projects it is harder for me to keep the faith. They certainly could change this particular issue around with a simple update.

Thanks for the OnePlus mention. That led me down a YouTube rabbit hole and I'm currently watching stuff on the Oppo Find X8. Lol
