Introducing the Amoeba account from Apple. We couldn't give you a phone, but we took your idea and decided to give you a bank account that morphs into a credit card, savings, checking, or mortgage account, all with one number.
Something that is very flexible vs foldable. Almost like we are comparing the two different mindsets involved here. ;)

Looking at the specs, brace for impact: battery (definitely) and durability (probably). Foldables are a good concept; the problem is that it’s not currently feasible to build a good one.

Not sure if this is self-mockery ?

You say you don't want both in one device due to the bulk, but you'd still buy it if apple makes one ?

While I have consciously (and unapologetically) invested in The Ecosystem, nothing I add to it has ever been just "because Apple made it." Heck no. I've passed on the vast majority of their offerings. Sure, I know there are some fanatics that would buy a polishing cloth, if Apple offered one. But that's not how I roll.

The parameters for me even considering a foldable are pretty specific: 1) has to be made by Apple's, 2) it can't be much bulkier than my current iPhone 14 Pro and 3) it can't be anywhere close to $2,449. After this boxes, there are a while slew of boxes that would have to check out for me to actually purchase. I'm open to Apple presenting something that checks all of my boxes, but not blindly so. 😉

Oh you are in luck!

To be fair, my Z Fold 4 is more comfortable in my pocket than my 12 Pro Max ever was, because it isn't nearly as wide. And no, I would never wear skinny jeans so that's not the issue. To each their own though. There's no one size fits all when it comes to cell phones. Rollables will have their day but I think we are at least 3-5 years out from being able to make them water resistant, let alone dust resistant.
That's interesting to hear about in-pocket fit. I've not yet heard/read anything about that aspect. Thanks.

And I am not at all a skinny jean person. Trust me, no one wants that. 🤪 Nor am I a cargo pant kind of guy either. Feels like a Goldie Locks moment here...

As I was just writing in another response: I'm open to Apple's take on almost anything - foldables included. But there is a series of specific boxes they would have to check in order for the consider their foldable and an entirely different set of boxes they'd have to check to see me actually hit the Buy button. Well see.

I know apple fans will make fun because apple doesn't yet have a folding phone, but after using one, I really want them to do something here. The folding phone in practice is really awesome.
That's good to hear. I have not used one nor know anyone who does. Always interested to hear form those who do.
Conceptually, I'm curious. We'll see what Apple has up their sleeve.

Another bonus for the Z Fold 4 is that since it isn't as wide as many of the slab phones but it's a bit thicker when folded, it fits better in my hands, therefore I've never dropped it. I dropped my Z Fold 3 one time over the course of the year that I owned it. Not bad! I've heard this from other Z Fold owners as well, including a buddy of mine that has the ZF4. I understand the boxes you need checked in order to buy one from Apple. There's nothing wrong with that.

Hate these phones with a passion! They are bulky, cumbersome and a waste of engineering hours. This is not the next best thing in mobile development but companies trying to force something on people like slightly curved screens from Samsung that sucked!! Hope Apple never goes this route.
They make them for people that still think, they can have everything in one small devise and the once that like to show off with gadgets 🤣 (there is 1 word for these people) I'll let your imaginations run wild 🤣

Alright I gotcha

Well I'm afraid even if apple does it it will be bulkier than your 14 pro, and heavier for sure . I mean the pixel fold is already a prowess

Unless they come with a rollable i don't see how it would weigh less than 250gr

When trying to be funny backfires because segfaultdotorg isn't aware that interest for flip/dumb phones is up :p

It just confirms gen Z are dumb 🤣

We can hate on foldable phones all we want, but only because there isn't one within our ecosystem that we can have. You probably don't want Apple's first gen on it either. But once the tech matures enough, this is ultimately the answer to the small phone/big phone dilemma.

I would guess Apple isn't doing this until they can get weight and folded dimensions to a highly marketable standard (e.g. "the thinnest expanding phone"). I would also speculate folding is not the priority - creases and gaps when folded are typically un-Apple design elements. I'd imagine they'll be all in on a scroll.
I have no interest in a foldable phone even if Apple makes one!
Scroll tech....now, that's a whole different ball game, something that would possibly tempt me, although only possibly

It's not even a good concept!
Scrolling screens is a good concept, alas not ready yet

Hmm definitely mixed on the success of this device. Better form factor with the wider screen, but at $1799, huge bezels, and with that crappy tensor chip it's not holding a candle to the Fold series. Plus Samsung gives out insane trade in prices, discounts, and heavily discounted gear with their devices. Competition is good and if Samsung does indeed release the Fold 5 early I'll expect some super good deals.

When Apple released one, they will have the crease issue resolved. Right now people are basically paying beta testers, paying what over 1700 for a prototype makes little sense to me.
The crease is the least of my issues with this form factor. The vertical flip phones intrigue me from a nostalgia standpoint (there’s something to be said about how we used to end calls with dumb phones by closing them), but I have no interest in a device that halfassedly fills an imaginary gap between a phone and an iPad mini.

I understand what mean about closing the phone to end calls. That’s why i love flip cases, just close the phone by closing the top. You can even carry a credit card or two depending on the case but thats a personal preference thing.

The hardware juxtaposition this spring will be interesting to watch unfold. On one hand, Google will unveil its most expensive smartphone to date with a smartphone/tablet hybrid. Meanwhile, all signs point to Apple unveiling its entry into face wearables with a mixed reality headset.

Time will tell who made the right bet moving forward. Foldables vs wearables. You all know where my money is.

I recently switched from my iphone to a pixel 7 in obsidian black. This thing is gorgeous and a welcome fresh air. Love the pure android experience even if nothing wrong with ui. The value is exceptional and yes i notice the 8gb ram vs the 4 on my iphone. Can actually take a photo and come back to whatever it is i am doing without a refresh.

I just wish they would offer a smaller form factor. Base is 6.3. I still carry my mini as a back up and portability though.

Not interested in a foldable. Google is known for value and 1700 is steep even for a foldable. Maybe if the g3 is a massive step up but even then..

It still baffles me why on earth a phone needs 12 GB of RAM by default.
As an upgrade option sure but… Really?
That memory is also shared with GPU in some application.

Contents are also getting bigger in filesize and Apps are getting heavier.

Any ML implementation will also need bigger ram.

Lastly... for marketing
