$1700 for a phone! I guess if it replaces a tablet and whatnot. Maybe this is the next step in transitioning away from having 5 different items on you. But given how fast tech advances I don’t know if I could put that much faith in a phone. The 13 mini is the first phone I’ve ever wanted to hang onto for a while.

Despite all the naysayers; apple will 100% make a folding phone eventually for one simple reason.

It gives them justification to bust into the $3000 price point.

At least it’s something new in andriod land. Were as Apple’s rumours keep getting more boring every year.

This year may be the worst the only new key feature is the action button. I am hoping next years rumoured Iphone 16 ultra with larger display comes to pass.

Otherwise I am hanging onto to my iPhone 12 Pro Max for as long as I can.

This I did not know. Colour me interested now!
I only know this because I've owned both at one point. The Flip 4 being the backup to my Fold 4. I don't understand the allure of the Flip 4 at all. I think it is a nonsensical device, at least for my use case. Why anyone would want to constantly have to flip their phone open to complete even the most basic tasks is beyond me. I grew up in the era of flip phones and while they had their moment in the sun, that sun set long ago. I traded it in for a Pixel 7 as my new backup phone. The Fold 4 on the other hand, is outstanding. I'll never go back to a traditional slab phone again. I will be buying the Pixel Fold on day one, no doubt about it.

Some UI there
It's the UI for the Mexican market. Everyone in Hollywood knows Mexico is sepia toned.😑
It still baffles me why on earth a phone needs 12 GB of RAM by default.
As an upgrade option sure but… Really?
In a word, bloat. Using the installed manufacturer's OS, my phone performed like a the mid-range phone it is. But after a [barebones] custom ROM and root, it's 2x as fast. And available RAM went from 1GB to 3GB. I probably exorcised some spyware running in the background as well.😏

That's Google (bad) taste of showing Material You for customizing the phone UI. I find the default to be much better on the eyes. It should look like this.

The Flip 5 will have a much larger outside screen. My coworker loves her Flip 4 though for storage. It fits her pocket much better even though it's 2x thicker. There are likely people who don't touch their phone every 10 minutes. I use my phone constantly so I would need a more functional outside screen.

Pixel phones have always looked uniformly terrible to me each generation and this render doesn't change my mind tbh.

I hope this foldable craze dies out like the 3d phones did. They look terrible.

Who knows - maybe they already plan to do so with their rumoured mixed reality headset.

I think we can agree that all other things equal, a large screen is more desirable than a smaller one, while also concluding that a larger viewable area doesn't necessarily have to come from the phone itself.

I don't agree simply because there is still a market for smaller phones. I have seen MAYBE three or four foldable in the wild. And I travel a lot across the country and overseas.

This is just a gimmick in my opinion. Like 3d phones and cameras and the Playstation phone.

I do see a few galaxy folds around me. There are people who use them, but they are still a small niche (large due to the price, I suspect). The Galaxy Flip seems more popular, especially with women, probably because they can keep them in their handbags. It's a no-go for men who desire a thinner form factor that they can easily slip into their pants pockets.

I did recently get to handle one folding phone (my project group member uses one). The square display is nice for viewing photos and pdf documents, but the crease in the middle is very noticeable even from a distance, and frankly, I find it an eyesore when reading because the screen protector is so reflective. One neat trick is that when using the rear camera for selfies, you can use the front display to check that everyone is within frame (and Samsung phones have this cool trick where you can wave at the phone to activate the camera).

Funnily enough, after we came back from overseas, and after I was just done singing its praises in another thread, I learnt that her fold's screen blacked out and she had to send it in for a pretty expensive repair, so she is currently using the S22 (it has 5 cameras at the back?).

The biggest downside I can think of is that while it tries to be both a phone and a tablet, it doesn't have the battery life to do both.
