Mmm.. Cos the Google home page is really complicated ain't it..

No but they saw the smaller galaxy tabs were doing well and wanted some of that action....followers these days.. not leaders... Next..

Yeah the smaller Galaxy Tabs that NO one was buying really motivated Apple to make the mini? If you know anything about Apple by now is that march to their own drummer.

how many of these do we need that do essentially the same thing? Is the market for them really that profitable that every tech company out there sees the value in competing in this space?

It's not the box that's important. It's the ecosystem.

Google is just trying to get a piece of the content pie.

It's even worth it to sell these at a loss, if you can push your content.

Apple made $1B last year selling content directly through their Apple TV.

I'd want a piece of that too.

I'm not surprised to see the hatred towards Google with this being an Apple rumors website but competition is better for consumers and many don't seem to understand that.

Look at the the recently released emails of Apple worrying about losing customers because other companies are offering larger display devices. Apple might finally win back customers they've lost regardless if you think its a good idea or not. Newer and better products can be released by Apple if they have someone to compete with.

lol Google.

Stop trying, you fail at everything that isn't search....

That's a pretty bold statement to say that Google is a failure at everything except for search. Google does a pretty damn good job where Apple fails. Search, Email, Maps and other services are superior to what Apple has to offer. Apple makes great hardware and a solid OS but services for example such as Siri aren't as good as Google Now.

You're also discrediting Android which is a serious and legitimate competitor for iOS. Regardless of what you may think, people buy it, use it and enjoy it.

Throughout the years, .Mac, MobileMe, and iCloud have been playing catch up. It's no secret that Apple does a poor job with providing cloud based services. Products like these show Apple what people are interested in wether they're a failure or a success.

So the fact that they've been trying to market Chrome "for everything" for how many years now only to come out and say, nope, forget all that... it's Android TV now.

They are designed for two different devices, how?

Chrome what? Chrome is a browser while Chromebooks runs Chrome OS and Chromecast is a mirroring device that "casts" content. It's a device that essentially gets sent a website address of what to play with essentially no GUI.

The name Android TV suits the device because that's what it does... it runs Android.

Don't get the impression I'm backing Google here. I love both companies and I look for whats best for my needs.

GoogleRumors.

This is why I love competition.

It's true, since Apple has been dependent on upgrades of existing products, they've got nothing new and exciting.

It's rather sad to see a good company with nothing but a CEO that keeps promising big things that haven't materialized.

Google continues to innovate and deliver while Apple fumbles.

He just sees you for what you are.

The quote wasn't even directed at me.

Please try to follow along.

My statement still stands. Lots of people can be passionate about apple, and not be totally enamoured with what is being produced/sold today. Would be pretty damn boring if anyone say around agreeing that items that had not been updated for many years, are still as ground breaking as when 1st introduced. Which is exactly what you are saying, based on your response.

iOS lacks proper tablet interface. .

Until you can explain how so I will have to respectfully disagree.

Looking at who you replied to I'm not even sure why you brought Apple into the equation. Apple does a lot more things than Google. They create hardware as well as software as well as cloud-based services and they run retail stores. You're not putting up a fair argument there. Actually since Microsoft makes mobile phone software (just like Google), has an office suite (as Google goes), offers cloud-based services (as Google does) and offers internet Search (just as Google does) that would've made more sense to bring up Microsoft to compare against Google since neither company are known as hardware companies as Apple is....or were you only interested in putting down Apple? ;)

I have to agree wholeheartedly because the new Mac Pro isn't any more innovative than the classic iPod.

Apple missed the chance of a big headstart... they should have made an appstore for the Apple TV years ago.

Mmm.. Cos the Google home page is really complicated ain't it..

Actually searching on Google has become less intuitive. The image searching has actually lost functionality. Somehow they have confused less useful and simple.

Not to me it doesn't. And I keep hearing about how consumers want choice, yet it's two companies - Apple and Samsung - and two operating systems - iOS and Android - dominating the mobile phone/tablet space. When it comes to PC's it's one company dominating - Microsoft. And I'll bet if you took a poll of iOS users here a large number would say they use Google services exclusively on their iOS devices. To me choice is overrated.

I think consumers would prefer fewer options that were better, than more options that are all basically the same. In my twitter feed someone said they don't need another box, they need the one they have to provide the content choices they want, the way they want to pay for it. Benedict Evans tweeted a graph that also illustrates the problem with TV:

As I've said before, I hope we haven't seen a new ATV yet because Apple has something up its sleeve on the content side. If all we get from them is basically what Amazon announced then I don't see that as really moving the ball forward.

Your opinion greatly differs from me. Choice is most definitely not overrated and while most people prefer Samsung or Apple there still is a niche that doesn't want to buy crap. I am in that niche.

IOS crap due to lack of features, touch wizz crap because need I say more?

Oh and BTW OSX deserves far more market share since it is much better then Windows

There needs to be a market need, and technology should be able to address that need. What kind of product would you like to see? I have the impression you (and many others) are just asking for something "new" without having any idea what you would like to see or have.

I don't think this is so. I think the iPod, iPhone and iPad created consumer "need" and therefore the market. Millions of people didn't "need" a smartphone in 2006. In 2007, they did. This is the defining quality of those devices.

Exactly. Until Apple came with a GUI that made sense for the 'normal' person, those previous smartphones where niche products. LG Prada vs iPhone is like night and day.

If you can't tell the difference between a laptop/PC and a phone/tablet i'm not sure how I could make it any clearer for you.

I sincerely hope Apple doesn't align itself with just one cable provider ...a move similar to what they did with ATT on the original iphone. I got rid of my ATV 6 months ago because it was not integrated with my ATT Uverse box. I like what ATT uverse has to offer so I won't be switching to comcast just because Apple's box integrates with it.

Get that common sense out of here.:)

When it comes to TV I disagree. I want to spend time actually watching the content I want rather than staring at the interface. But that's just me.

Then you should stay away from Apple TV and go for Roku, which has an ugly UI, but unquestionably richer content than ATV. Or if you have local content, WD's box is even better, but butt ugly.

Apple's greatest strength is design and generally well thought out UI. Unfortunately, ATV is not the best example of Apple's excellence, even if it is the best of what's on the market now.

But Google has made incredible strides with the Android UI, so there is no reason they cannot outdo Apple, particularly since Apple has become rather complacent.

Yeah that faux-glass shelf in the ATV GUI is a think to marvel at. Stare at it for hours....

Honestly Chrome OS & Android have beautiful UIs. I don't get why anyone would think they're not.

You made a blanket assertion that only Apple makes beautiful UIs but that's just your opinion.

Well thank you for telling me what I just didn't say.

"That's just your opinion" - well...................... yes, (is redundancy necessary?)

Wow... insightful excellence - brilliant, thanks :)
