This is a mistake for Google. They should instead be supporting Amazon. Instead, they're fragmenting the Android based marketplace and pissing off their partners. Further, it doesn't sound like their device will be any better or have any real product differentiation from the Fire TV, unless they artificially create such differentiation by withholding services on Amazon's device.

Let me get this straight Google , the company that makes Android, is going to fragment Android by releasing a television interface. Meanwhile Amazon, whos fire OS IS a fragmented version of Android, should get support from Google?

Dosent really matter whether its hardware or software - the iPad 4 was still released roughly 6 months after the iPad 3. I think the response on here was "Your iPad 3 will still work, so stop moaning". Likewise, the original Galaxy Gear still works.
The Galaxy Gear got panned in just about every review with plenty of do not buy recommendations. That was not the case with the 3rd gen iPad. If Apple had released iPad 2 6 months after iPad 1 then I could maybe see the comparison (as iPad was a brand new product). I think it's quite obvious Samsung wanted to beat Apple and Google to market with something, so they announced a product not ready for prime time. And they may have gotten burned because the improved product (what should have been their 1st gen product) still beat Google and Apple to market.

But then the Galaxy Gear received software updates and the reviews changed. The Galaxy gear has since received great reviews from review sites and customers alike.

Apple should definitely release a box that connects to your TV, that streams music from iTunes Match, and video from any iTunes purchases, maybe a few 3rd party services like Netflix. Something small, that easily fits onto an AV rack, maybe a super slim remote control.

An added bonus would be if it could stream video (or music) from a computer on the local network, and I know it’s crazy, but using an iOS device as a remote would be _awesome_.

They have. It is called Apple TV 2 and Apple TV 3.

iPad 3 Introduced: March 7, 2012
iPad 4 Introduced: November 2, 2012

So that's roughly 9 months and not 6 months.
Or when it suits your argument we can shorten that period?

I'm confused: Is this an evolution of the existing Google TV platform, or have they given up on that?

Does seem interesting that they have the chromecast, for which developers will have to code to a different UI standard, the old Google TV which again has a different standard, and now the new box with its own standard. Why wou you have so many different devices to do the same thing? They seem to be simply competing with themselves. Very strange IMHO.

More vapourware from Google. You know that wearables fantasy made the nightly news?

Google truly is the new Microsoft - sure it's cr@p now, but wait 'till you see what we've got coming…

And Microsoft truly is the new Google - cr@p in the cloud.

If iWatch turns out to be the Knowledge Navigator… I'll start backing up to floppy disks. The end is nigh. Is it time for Mr Schiller to jump off a ladder again, mummy…?

Note my use of the word "roughly" and the lack of the word "exactly".

If you want to be pedantic, there was 7 months between the release of the Galaxy Gear watches and not 6 months and someone else previously stated.

PLUS the iPad 3 was discontinued on the 23rd October 2013 - So that could be factored into the discussion as well.

Apple last to the party again.
Sigh.
One a leader and now it can't even play catchup.

Why wait?
It is obvious Apple has nothing left in its bag of tricks when it cannot even pull off the most incremental updates to its product lines.

Enough said.

Last???

Ummm maybe you missed Apple TVs 1 through 3......

Roughly +/- 3 months?? I can understand if you were out 1 month but 3??

Yeah, discontinued just over 10 days before the new one.... so? Still not 6 months, not even close.

Still not acceptable in my opinion for a product to be discontinued less then 9 months after release. Just goes to show that Apple also rushes products out.

At least the original Galaxy Gear is still available for purchase and receiving updates.

Is it just me that the competitor starts to copy Apple?

Will Apple be copying other competitors when/if it releases a larger size iPhone?
Did Apple copy other competitors when it released a smaller sized iPad?
Will Apple be copying other competitors when/if it releases a watch?

how many of these do we need that do essentially the same thing? Is the market for them really that profitable that every tech company out there sees the value in competing in this space?

I'd say that with just about every household worldwide, averaging 2 to 3 Tv's, that this market could be enormous!!

If iPhone 6 will be revolutionary it won't be because of the screen size. But am sure Apple haters will try and spin it their own way..... like "It's just the iPhone 5/5S with a larger screen"

I'm no Apple hater, but I am mildly concerned that either the best is behind us. Maybe going forward, we'll get something revolutionary, but a watch, a top box set, and and a 5 inch phone aren't revolutionary. So long as OS X is in tact (Even if Apple tries to make OS X iOS, the backlash would be too great), I will buy Macs because they are clearly better computers. The iPad is still the best tablet out, as well. I want to be wrong on the iPhone, I really do, but there hasn't been a revolutionary iPhone since 2010.

I bet you the average is less than or equal to one per household, and I doubt most people have patience for more than one of these.

You seem to believe myth not fact because the fact is Apple, historically, is rarely first to market. If we just look at recent history -- last 14 years:

- iPod wasn't the first digital player. 2nd, or 3rd for that matter. And when Jobs introduced it the brilliant folks on the MR forum mocked it mercilessly that all the world needed was another MP3 player.
- iTunes wasn't the first desktop market player (pro tip: iTunes wasn't even developed by Apple; it bought it).
- iPhone wasn't the first smart phone. And who even thought BB could be overtaken.
- iPad wasn't the first tablet computer. Of course it wasn't really a computer to MR forum goers -- just a big iPhone.

All these product categories existed way before Apple came to market w/ a competitor. Apple just refined them to be usable and desirable. But being first to market isn't a marker for anything. If a product is crap, it's crap even if it beats the competition by a year. And that is Apple's philosophy throughout the Jobs Era - wait until a product is ready for market rather than put out a imbecilic "First! :p" post.

And as for ATV -- Apple has a product. I doubt a few more months is going to make consumers go elsewhere so they can use apps on TV.

Original Thought

Can't these Tech Giants come up with an "ORIGINAL THOUGHT" of their own without "borrowing" someone elses? When and if they do come up with their own idea, make sure it knocks our socks off..not just a "some what copy" of another company with the same functions, but with newer, better, easier to install and use...In my opinion these ideas would out shine any other "like" competitors product.

Just goes to show that Apple also rushes products out.

They sold 3 millions iPad third version in under 4 days , so yeah.... they clearly rushed out with that product. I think you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about, sorry.

You would be right if you said that about iOS 7.

No. Phones have had various screen sizes ever since they started using screens
Do you think different TV manufacturers are copying each other just because they all have similar screen sizes.

Did Apple copy other competitors when it released a smaller sized iPad?

Again No Apple has used various screen sizes for its products iPhone,iPad,Ipod Touch so has been using different screen sizes for a long time. If Apple use a larger screen size in the next iPhone then its purely Apple releasing a product with a larger screen.

Will Apple be copying other competitors when/if it releases a watch?

Watches have evolved from clockwork to basic digital to the now so called smart watch nobody is copying anyone there.

I agree with you in principle, however the iPhone is the exception. The iPhone actually did change everything.
Sure, but so did the iPod and the iPad, and even the MacBook Air and Apple TV. All represented radical improvements over available products that totally changed the entire market dynamic and in the first stage obliterated competition. After that the rest jumped on the bandwagon.

Apple is never the first in a market segment, but always the first to get it truly right after which the competition jumps in and mimics their strategy.

I agree the only company we should have is Apple!!! There is no need for any other brand and if Apple don't make the device I DON CARE I probly didnt need it anyway.

The UI on my little iPhone looks the same as the UI on my big iPad.

and what about the apps? They look the same on my other xperia x10 mini pro with the 2.5" screen as they do on the Nexus 10".
