To me Chrome feels less sluggish than Safari, in sense of clicking stuff, scrolling, etc. I also like the interface better, especially the combined Navigation and Search Window. I absolutely *hate* the separate download window in Safari.

Dunno, but every time i go back and use Safari it feels... old

The equivalent of Click2Flash is available for Chrome
I'm sure it is, but that doesn't justify Chrome for me if I'm happy with Safari.

No argument there - but I did think it was worth clarifying for people who might read your post and assume it's not available.

I'll also mention that the AdBlock and FlashBlock equivalents for Chrome don't offer quite the same level of flexibility in terms of setting up filters, so occasionally I have to jump through another (small) hoop or two to get the result I want.

As far as UI goes, IMO Click2Flash for Safari's is better than the equivalents on both Firefox and Chrome. They all get you mostly to the same place though, which is what's most important.

Two major quirks that have stopped me from using Chrome are:

1) Double clicking in the URL selects the whole URL instead of the section between dots or slashes.

2) Autocompletion in the URL bar requires the use of a dropdown menu, otherwise it executes a google search.

Granted I didn't spend any time trying to find out how to make these behave like Safari... Are there ways to go about doing this?

1- think you may have to live with that one

2- depends, sometime you have to arrow down to closest match, other times it autocompletes right in line... I think it 'learns'this behaviour more you use it.

Having the search and address bar are just such massive benefits for me now I cant go back... feels like stepping back a few years having to navigate seperately... sure someone on the safari got beats from Jobs for not coming up with it first :D It would be such an apple-like minimalist thing to do dont you think?

First time I installed Chrome, I noticed the GoogleUpdater kept trying to access the internet, even when Chrome wasn't even loaded. I tracked the files down and trashed them ASAP.

Maybe to look for updates?? And I suppose if you have apps like google earth installed, the frtequency of these lookups would increase. The google updater has already been scrutinised, its not seeding your data.

All my personal tests show Safari still loading pages faster than Chrome... I don't know if I'm convinced there's any reason to switch.

Aside from that, I don't know how you people are getting Safari to crash unless you're not blocking Flash ads.

Lame

Chrome would have to offer a lot better stability, functionality and ease of use to make it interesting. It doesn't. I'll stick to Safari. I use PithHelmet which is better than Chrome for controlling abuse of resources and Glims which is better than Chrome for short cuts. No reason to bother with Chrome, it just gets dirty fast.

I might be reading too much into this, but Gruber is doing his coy info release thing on daring fireball.

"The other big thing that’s missing (compared to both Chrome and Firefox) is a proper extension API. If only Apple had an imminent developer conference where they could unveil such a thing."

Could be his wish, but considering his history, I think we can view officially Safari extensions announcement a "definite reasonbly possibly maybe" at WWDC.

I'm guessing Safari 5 pushed live for Mac and Windows in just under 2 weeks after the WWDC keynote.

Given this will likely support Webkit 2 features, such as the split process model an updated Nitro engine etc.

I'm most looking forward to this. I've been very happy with the 64 bit version of Safari in Snow Leopard. Fast and stable.

If Safari 5 is delayed or falls below the standard then I may investigate Chrome further. I do have it installed, but use it very rarely.

Aside from that, I don't know how you people are getting Safari to crash unless you're not blocking Flash ads.

Agreed. People should turn off Flash. Almost all it is used for is advertising and glitz. The web is far more pleasant without Flash, Java and other plugins. It's like the difference between watching a DVD (with fast forward) and Television (blah).

I agree, however I think the behavior needs to be a bit more intelligent. For example I type Cmd-L -> 'www.goo' -> ENTER (like I'm used to in Safari) and Chrome does a google search for 'www.goo'. It's obvious (to me at least) that I was trying to type a URL instead of executing a search. I wonder how many times I have to do that until it starts auto-completing properly in line...

Might be nothing new but it's still a nice touch and you don't have to install anything for it to work!
And on my mac it's loads pages alot faster than safari.

Well, you do have to install Chrome to get it to work, which is the same number of steps as installing Glims.

If it works faster for you, that's great.

They're both great browsers. Safari 4 was a very strong release, and with Glims, Adblock and Click2Flash installed is great for me.

Chrome is excellent too, now that it's stable! Really fast and extensions are a plus.

I have all 3, even Flock [the latter is hardly ever touched, so I'll probably trash it]. I prefer Safari, but there are times, and certain sites that only Firefox will perform properly. Chrome still feels unfinished to me; not sure why. Again, that's me, not a reflection on Google...

I tried both Firefox/Chrome for everyday use, but still go back to Safari...

I didn't even know it was a beta.

I've been using it for months.

It's much better than firefox

and firefox is much better than safari. Yuck.

Does this fix the constant Flash crashing? Flash was terrible in Chromes, I cant count how many times the browser locked up because of a flash ad.

safari with click2flash and glims .. i dont need anything else
except for occasional use of greasemonkey in firefox ...

but SAFARI FTW

The one thing I wish Chrome could do was synch bookmarks with Mobile Me to be compatible between my Mac and iPhone. And I have gotten some Flash crashes which would be nice to fix.

Otherwise, I'm with those who say it feels "snappier" compared to Safari. And I'm not a paranoid person re. privacy (Facebook is much worse I agree).

I may just have to start using Bing. I'm not sure when M$ became the lesser of two weevils.

And I'm not a paranoid person re. privacy (Facebook is much worse I agree).

You couldn't get me to go anywhere near Facebook. Or Twitter. Or Latestsocialnetworkmonster. All garbage.

Besides the fact they are a complete waste of time and energy, you're just begging for ID theft.
