Give us YouTube for iPad and Google Maps! Thanks!

www.youtube.com on your iPad.

maps.google.com on both devices.

I for one haven't had any trouble with the new maps and I'd suggest people use it instead of listening to the media gripe. It's a case by case basis, and while it sucks for some people its fine (and better) for others.

Also, the more people use it, the better it will get. I'm in the camp that Apple's decision to move away from Google was good for both camps and the user. In the end, we'll have two awesome mapping options.

My Apple maps app is telling me that I'm 1.5 miles and 6 minutes away from the chair that I'm sitting in right now. Seems legit.

Well that's at least a big advantage over the Google Maps app then (assuming that it is workable ;)).

I'm also a bit surprised that they seem to have such a problem in producing accurate maps. Especially when doing business with Tomtom, they have been around for quite a long time. Were Apple handed over a subset of the Tomtom data?

im not sure about all of that, but seeing as how im a Geography student with emphasis in mapping I wasnt surprised hearing about the glitches that people are having. This stuff takes time. Its a dynamic world out there, things are always changing. If nobody uses the application and sends in the error requests then it wont get changed as fast. I plan on using the app and every time I see an error ill submit. But thats because im a geography nerd :D

ok i have one rule about this and every other part of iOS. IF THERE IS ALTERNATIVE TO A PROBLEM YOU HAVE WITHOUT HAVING TO PAY ANY MONEY, DON'T FU**IN COMPLAIN ABOUT IT! For example, no native youtube app built in, or even maps because there are web apps and other services that work just as well.

web google maps is not the same, why shouldnt we complain? we are the reason the stock keeps on climbing. it would be stupid not to listen to us.

streetview is pretty much ESSENTIAL. can't believe it's gone.

apple really need to come up with their own version...but it's taken google YEARS to gather all those streetview images so i just can't see it happening.

massive disappointment.

This is really great news. I kind of like the new Apple maps (TomTom?) especially the navigation, but google maps was also very useful to me, and I liked the traffic info better.

I wonder if Apple will be more kind to Google now that Google is voluntarily creating an app that that you could argue is necessary for iOS to be a viable platform, somewhat in the way that Microsoft Office for the Mac used to be (and maybe still is) necessary for the viability of the Mac.

Apple's a bit like a teenager. It wants to get rid of Google Maps before it's ready to. Google comes off looking like the benevolent parent, letting Apple continue tinkering with its Maps program while it provides the basics in the mean time, even knowing it is giving Apple a chance to eventually surpass Google Maps.

To me it looks like they're going a step beyond Don't Be Evil. They're not even being strategically competitive with a company that hasn't said very nice things about them. They're just being nice!

"Google is aiming to have it available on the App Store before Christmas".

LOL :D Good move Google.

Excellent work, Apple. The satellite imagery is an absolute joke. It's as if they picked the cloudiest possible day and said "shall we take some snaps?!".

This is the typical new apple consumer thinking. Completely blind and clueless about anything.

This is stupid. Complain all you want about the Maps app but don't call someone who isn't having problems "blind and clueless" just because you're having problems.

I haven't found any problems with the maps app in my area. Am I blind and clueless as well?

Just my 2 cents

They gonna keep shooting themselves in the foot? FFS, get your act together, Apple, and don't release a product until it's ready, and furthermore don't deny a competitor a fair advantage because you messed up. This is why I despise the closed garden system...

If you despise it so, why are you in the system? And why don't we wait until we actually know they reject it?

Hopefully this will put a fire under Apple's ass to make their maps better.

It is getting better every day. And I don't, personally see what is that bad about it. Yes, it is true I don't use the transit maps, etc, so it is a small impact to me, and can understand those that rely on it, but I thought I read an article today about all the apps already updated to support transit and feeds into iOS Maps?

Apple, at least give us customers a choice of map apps or a tech note on how to downgrade to iOS5.

The answer was to not upgrade, it isn't like it was a secret that Google Maps were gone...

I'm really happy to hear this. I was very frustrated to see the walk/car/bus option missing. And it seems like it may be quite a while before Apple prioritizes this feature over so many other bugs and issues.

BTW - This is my first post ever!

Again, I thought I read an article today about all the apps already updated to support transit and feeds into iOS Maps?

Goooooooood :)

Apple Maps can't seem to find anything local to me!

That is Yelp, if you are referring to places other than a physical address. Yelp will also improve for everyone with people using iOS Maps

Color me among those that will stick with Apple's new version of Maps. I like it better than Google's.

Ditto

Must be my living in a town of less than 10K people, getting very quick geo-locating on my current location (instant?) and anyplace that I want to go (all the Yelp reviewed places anyway), and finding that the satellite map shows the shed we built in our backyard 2 years ago that makes me feel pretty good about this v.1 of of Apple Maps. Especially considering that the service providers have us pretty far down on the list for fast connections.

Now if Apple plans to just let all of its customers suffer without taking their own map app seriously, and locking up any competition to keep us from enjoying our product...well, they probably wouldn't be pushing that market cap so hard? Or is it just the sheeple that believe Apple is actually trying to wtfpwn the competition, even if they don't always succeed on the first attempt?

If Google gets another pony in the race and it's better, then I'll use it - much like the Downcast installation and Podcasts uninstall that occurred on my phone 2 weeks ago - this too shall pass. As others have mentioned, there are already nav-app competitors out there, and they were there well before the iOS6 release.

Not sure who's fault it has been for last number of years that the Android has had Maps Voice Turn by Turn and the iPhone has not. But if it was Google then they deserve to be kick off the distribution. I think it would not make any sense for Google not to put our the FULL Google Maps App if they are releasing one. For me the new Apple Maps "simple" Voice Turn by Turn has be very good. I have been using it since the first beta and it has been getting better with each release. I also have Navigon but even though it has a lot of features it can't even get a contacts address correct if it has a suite number. So for me I will give the Google Maps a try and it is better I will use it until Apple is better. Pretty simple for me.

there's a few google map functions you dont get on iphone and navigation is one. Maybe google want to give android users something extra?

feel bad for the people behind Apple maps effort but its just too weak, only tom tom? give me a break apple...

plus I'm sure getting a store here and there wrong is probably ok... but monuments, parks and sometimes entire towns wrong, streets that don't even exist anymore make their app unbearable

plus what happened to the "ease of use" agenda apple loves? the maps are sometimes unreadable you just see lines and lines with no friggin names!! you have to spend time zooming in and out to locate stuff, that's just stupid and unacceptable when your driving or are in a hurry looking for a street, with google maps you can see different streets without even touching the screen

If Apple make another stupid decision and reject the app (unlikely but then look at how they released an app that clearly wasn't ready and took away so much functionality) then my next upgrade (whenever that may be) will be for my Android handset rather than my iOS handset. I like both, and will still use an iPhone for development purposes, but Apple's becoming more and more difficult to like these days.

Oh and I'm not just some clueless consumer moaning about a small issue. I'm a developer and I reported a handful of errors in the numerous betas, both minor and more serious, only to see that none of them have been fixed. I remember seeing the maps app in the first beta and being incredibly sceptical of the the quality of the finished product. It seems I was right to be so sceptical.
