Google should even charge a few bucks for it. I'm sure most would pay for it and it would send a strong signal to Apple that it has bitten of its nose to spite its face.

Assuming the app gets approved, I'm sure Apple will be slightly taken aback by how many people download it.

If they were smart, they’d wait another month to make the Maps tempest grow.

If they were REALLY smart they’d intentionally violate some obscure but important technical rule that will never make sense to non-programmers, with the intention of getting rejected (at first) and thus fueling an even BIGGER tempest.

Yep, came here to say those same two points.

Well that's at least a big advantage over the Google Maps app then (assuming that it is workable ;)).

I'm also a bit surprised that they seem to have such a problem in producing accurate maps. Especially when doing business with Tomtom, they have been around for quite a long time. Were Apple handed over a subset of the Tomtom data?

Now is Apple going to pull the same crap they did with Google voice and delay delay delay it coming out.

Well, that is good news, but lets hope it arrives sooner than freaking Christmas, I bet it is ready to go today!

Not sure who's fault it has been for last number of years that the Android has had Maps Voice Turn by Turn and the iPhone has not. But if it was Google then they deserve to be kick off the distribution. I think it would not make any sense for Google not to put our the FULL Google Maps App if they are releasing one. For me the new Apple Maps "simple" Voice Turn by Turn has be very good. I have been using it since the first beta and it has been getting better with each release. I also have Navigon but even though it has a lot of features it can't even get a contacts address correct if it has a suite number. So for me I will give the Google Maps a try and it is better I will use it until Apple is better. Pretty simple for me.

The maps app is ****. We know it.

It takes time to develop such things. The whole AI and ML behind this insane. Google had a pretty big head start. This will only get better if we use it.

I'm not sure people resulted with the same comments when Google launched it back in the day.

To make Apple maps better, you got to use it. I've moved to the US and have been using it for a month. It works great for me but it was pathetic when I was back in India.

Another instance where consumers just need things ready and cannot accept a change and help to make a technology better. Duh!

While that's true, the lack of transit functionality means that many times, I won't be using it. I don't really use the transit directions where I live much (I work for the transit authority, so I know the system inside and out) but anywhere else I go I depend on them. I'm sure that Apple will improve the app, but if they continue to leave off things like walking or transit directions, it just isn't useful for me much of the time.

But will it offer turn by turn?
The free Mapquest app has been able to do this a long time before iOS6. If googlemaps doesn't, then hopefully the competition from Apple and Mapquest will push it in that direction eventually.

Competition is good for the consumer, as are choices :)

By the way folks, maps.google.com works just fine if you want your precious transit options back TODAY.

I can see it easily becoming the number one downloaded free app. I'll certainly be downloading it day one.

Perhaps apple could quietly introduce an option in a future update to allow you choose which map app is used for things like Siri. Is that even possible? Pipe dream?

You kinda have to feel bad for the people who've worked for hours and hours and hours to try to get this to spec in time, and are now being humiliated around the world..

This isn't a simple process. What Apple's done is released a __.0 release, and gained the largest developer pool they could ask for to find the mistakes and bugs at the cost of some bad PR.

It'll get better from here, but it'll take time. In the mean time, they need to get that google maps-program through the app store !

I'm glad Google Maps will soon be available to those that want it, but I won't be among those downloading it. Apple's Maps seems to work just fine so far in my area thank you.

Somewhere...

Somewhere, deep in his secret bunker in Mountain View, Sergey Brin is leading a team of rebel Googlers in an effort to install Android Jelly Bean on an iPhone 5...

Google made a mess of the YouTube app by removing the fast forward and rewind buttons, I wonder what they'll do to the Maps app. On the bright side, I'll have my Street View back.

Now all we need is for Apple to finally implement a way to change default apps in iOS!

Agreed: browsers, mail, maps, calendars, at the very least. I have no 3rd-party alternatives I prefer (yet) but I support the option! A custom URI scheme is a so-so workaround—it just isn’t the same.

Google should even charge a few bucks for it. I'm sure most would pay for it and it would send a strong signal to Apple that it has bitten of its nose to spite its face.

You’re assuming Apple wanted this separation and Google didn’t? You’re certain that Google didn’t demand unreasonable terms? These are unknowns.

Still, even if it IS Google’s doing, I’m not sorry to see a fire lit under someone (Apple) to seriously compete with Google on maps. Even if it takes a lot of evolution/iteration to get there.
