I'm really happy to hear this. I was very frustrated to see the walk/car/bus option missing. And it seems like it may be quite a while before Apple prioritizes this feature over so many other bugs and issues.

BTW - This is my first post ever!

You and me both! I am not updating to iOS 6 until this App is released. This was a killer feature in Maps

Welcome to the board!

there's a few google map functions you dont get on iphone and navigation is one. Maybe google want to give android users something extra?
That is my guess as well and that is why I went out and bought Navigon. But now that Apple Maps has it I no longer really need Navigon. For the very simple (Apple Like) Maps Navigation is great. I will continue to use it unless Google is way better. Have not seen the version on Android.

thought google was a piece of crap and apple and ios users were better off without them....wow really! Please down vote my comment cause the truth is staring you in the face!

I disagree that Google should provide an app for their maps. They should keep it as a competitive advantage.

All I know is I'm happy to have an Android phone for navigation and my iPhone for work and occasional nav.

Android remains my go-to for around the country navigation. Why would Google give this competitive advantage back to Apple? It's strange from a business perspective.

Google should keep it's maps on Android. Want awesome maps that took decades to build? Don't get an iPhone.

Google should sit back and watch millions of iPhone users complain about the quality of Apple's maps and smile...Google has a true a competitive advantage here and they should protect it, IMO.

They gonna keep shooting themselves in the foot? FFS, get your act together, Apple, and don't release a product until it's ready, and furthermore don't deny a competitor a fair advantage because you messed up. This is why I despise the closed garden system...

Don't 100% of Google's projects get released as Beta versions? Can't recall a single project/product of theirs that wasn't in Beta and not available to public.

yea, but couldn't imagine they'd approve it

Apple has very little to gain by keeping Google Maps off IOS and a lot to lose.

They didn't get to be the most valuable company in the world by making bad business decisions for the sake of sticking it to a competitor.

Come Back Google - All Is Forgiven

I don't know how Apple's Maps app is working in the USA - which seems to be all that matters - but over here in the UK it's dreadful. It's far less detailed than Google and sometimes woefully inaccurate. It also seems to think I have a fifty yard walk to undertake from my living room (current location) to my house.
Google Maps had their limitations - lack of ongoing directions a la TomTom for one - but Maps seems to have no clear idea of what it's setting out to do and so does nothing particularly well

I heard google will give iphone app the ability to store maps on the device like you can on android but they wont give google navigation

this is the most important thing for me and I'm desperate for it. I'm often driving in places with poor mobile reception so getting the map is a pain in the butt. If they add this then I'm so;d.

I do like the use of vector maps tin Apple's maps though. very nice.

Ok, so that's one for Apple's crappy maps

This is the typical new apple consumer thinking. Completely blind and clueless about anything.

Just don't travel too far from home.

I'm don't mean this as a blanket defense of Apple's map app, but it has two main problems and by no mean do they affect everyone. Aside from these problems, the app is quite a bit nicer than the old maps app. It's silly to make a blanket statement that it sucks, because it doesn't suck for many people. It's esepcially silly to call people "blind and clueless" for liking the new app... If the problems don't affect you then you're the opposite of blind and clueless to use it.

BTW, in my opinion the two main problems are:
* poor map and POI data in places (not everywhere)
* no street view (not especially useful in many places anyway)
