I have all my house connected with nest thermostat, samsung tv's, switches/lights/temperature/door sensors from Xiaomi!

What bother me is that Apple is f********* us and force to update/upgrade devices. My mother has an 5s on iOS 10 and it's not supported! I can't setup any automation that includes her (for example everybody leave the house). It force me to update on iOS 11 or upgrade the phone! Sick of this **** from Apple ...

I am amused by the rampant blinkered bigotry on this thread and all about switching a light bulb.
You all need a good slap.

The first time a kid from next door hacks someones "smart house" and turns on their stove, unlocks their doors etc, this entire thing will end up DOA. Somethings, tech should just stay away from.

Great example.

But the question is: why can't siri do that?

Yeah man the first time someone someone's anti lock brakes don't work this entire thing will end up DOA. Keep technology out of cars, some things tech should just stay away from.

Who would even want a button that unlocks your car door when some kid next door will obviously just hack it?

Why even have light switches? Let's go back to rubbing sticks together for warmth.

Seen several apparently decent automated home setups and been totally underwhelmed by them all - I think Apple and Google need to convince me that this is tech I need rather than whoop I just turned the lights up or down by 5% or changed their hue slightly.

Or don't actually benefit from being connected devices.

The 5,000 number sounds impressive but what does it mean? How many devices realistically can one household have and benefit from. Reminds me of Android in their land grab days, fragmentation city. Lets get as many irrelevant connected devices as possible never mind what they are!

I'm just wondering would you use the same argument in a article that compares ARkit with ARcore? saying the fact that ARkit has more support and apps is in the end meaningless. I doubt it.

The 5,000 number sounds impressive but what does it mean

It means that almost any(or most) smart home devices on the market offer support for Google's/Amazon's platforms.

We're talking past each other. Do they sell 'MallardDucks' Profile? You're right, they don't explicitly do that, but that's just a fig leaf - in practice that's exactly what happens.

LoL so you are contradicting your self in the same sentence. You admit they don't sell your(individual and personal) profile info like you claimed at first and finish claiming (based on your subjective and disingenuous point of view) that in practice that's exactly what happens.

Congratulations Google. I bet about 4000 of those products are garbage. The best stuff works with multiple platforms anyway: Lutron, Hue, Schlage, Hunter, ecobee, etc. Why do I care if low-end junk also works on your platform?
Well one of those products is Nest Thermostat which is arguably the best connected stat on the market.

It would be nice if these companies could get together and create common standards for smart home devices. It's kind of ridiculous that so few of them work with HomeKit/Siri.

Ya I agree. I’m getting the temp sensor which was the one thing I didn’t like about it but I knew it was coming out when I bought it.

Also getting the smoke detector and eventually the security. And maybe cameras.

Yeah, I’ve got all of that. Nest protect, Secure, and thermostat (with additional sensors), and indoor cams. Works really great.

Later this year I’d like to get the Doorbell and outdoor cam.

And google sends everything you say to their DB and AI systems. Congrats.

Just a bit of advice. All platforms, including siri / Apple's send data home to their own servers for analysis.

MacOS for example sends spotlight searches back

it's reasonable to believe that SIRI and it's use also does the same. if you are concerned about your data leaving your own network, no smart / home automation is going to be for you.

I’m not sure what you’re getting at. Though speaking of Harmony, I’m hoping the next model supports HomeKit. The Harmony Elite came out in 2015 so I’m sure Logitech is working on a new model as we speak.

I meant Siri does not work with Harmony remotes. For example, I can tell Alexa to "turn on the movie" and my movie activity will start. Siri does not support Harmony.

I love that I can control everything with my google home. I just say "Ok google watch a movie" And the TV, receiver, blu ray player all turn on and change to the right inputs/ports. The lights dim as well.

Its so easy and I have it set up for video games/netflix exc.

So you are upset that your moms phone needs the latest updated software to do stuff that cant be done on a previous version on iOS? That is like being mad at my 1080p tv because it cant display 4K HDR content...

Why? most of the homekit compatible deices are also compatible with Google or Amazon, they are not limited to Apple.

I am using some devices with Alexa, they worked most of times as they should and I am going through a phase right now where they are not working at all for no apparent reason. It is either Alexa or the device. I will never find out because the hurdle to make your product compatible is considerably lower (compared to Homekit) and therefore in all likelihood less attention to detail is being paid to proper implementation, especially when things change on the software end.

Any chance that the devices that are not working are iHome plugs?

Home automation is one of those things that you need to have a need for before really going out and getting. Some reason why it makes more sense to automate. I also found that just doing a Full home makover for automation didn't make a lot of sense. Instead it was a slower roll out of products as I found a reason to automate something.

EG: just addign lights doesn't make sense unless you have reason for remote / automation. For example, porch and front hallway lights that turn on after dark as I approach the house so that the pathway and front hall are well lit when I get home.

The nest/thermostat is another one, where, living in a region that can go from 0c to 20c (or reverse) in a day while i'm out can see the inside temperature go from needing to be heated to neeing to be cooled. This can all be done automatically, or voice controlled, not just while inside the house, but from my phone as well. It's really nice to have a house that's comfortable temperature before I walk in the door, instead of hours after I'm already home.

I've also setup automatic switches for an aquarium, that can turn on the tanks UV light in time with sunrise/set, and can be remotely turned on/off if need be.

these aren't things I went out one day and bought all at once. They're things that I slowly implemented as a need was determined. All of which have been good quality of life improvements.
