Since this won't happen until at least late 2011 - how many iPad's would've Apple sold? And by that time there will be iPad 2 - and Android would still be trying to match iPad 1.
Sorry, but Apple has this "tablet" market on lock down for a while ...

LOL it's not even Android. It's an untested (on a mass scale) debut of a OS developed for Netbooks - Chrome OS. They'll probably play catch up for ages.

@whomever it was, I see you retracted your offer of a bet

ChromeOS is supposed to be fully internet based....

...Don't know how that's going to work in a place without internet. I'm not one of those people to tie myself into a data plan.

So funny that Google is following Apple around trying to copy their success. Kinda sad, really. "Google, please go back to building search crap, that's what you do! Leave the cool products to the company that can do it right!"

in that case...following your intelligent way of thinking, Apple should just stick to making Icrap "ipads, ipods and iphones"...oh waight they just f*cked up on the latest iphone release, so stay away from phones also iguess...Apple should stay away from making computers, since all we seem to get is outdated hardware at hilariously insane prices, the only ones stupid enough to claim Macs are great value are fanboys gone stupid.

and by the way...Apple did his fair share of copying stuff, hell there entire look/design is a complete rip off from 1960 Braun products...also its not as if Apple invented the tablet now is it.

I know this is a forum dedicated to Apple but lets try to keep our minds a little open.

Google brings a failed smartphone launch, a weak marketplace, and a completely subsidized device running an unproven OS.

I guess it's sad for the industry that the only true innovator is one sole company - Apple.

Google ... go for it, but just don't care and I will not buy it because it's just one more thing you will be tracking and storing in your vast database.

And for what else?
Zoom... and?

Read again, I didn't say it's a useless/bad thing. I just said it's hugely overrated. It doesn't come as a surprise that SJ keeps talking about it since they hold the important patents. Doesn't change the fact that people don't zoom that much. In fact, iOS is great BECAUSE you don't have to use multi-touch all the time.

Also, WinMobile or a tablet running a desktop OS would still be fine specimens of rubbish even with multi-touch.

Why is it so important to you to discount others' way of using things?
You don't get the usefulness of multi touch. Great.

Someday Chrome OS and Mac OS will compete while Windows fades away. (assuming Chrome comes to PCS eventually).

Look here . It's a full fledged computer - no crippling involved. The novelty is that it runs everything within the browser - Flash/AIR Apps, Native C++/OpenGL Apps, HTML5/JavaScript/webGL apps everything goes! You can even install apps locally.

Whoa there pardner. If the iPad isn't being recognize as a 'full fledged computer' then no way is a chromeOS device one. It's a just browser, no matter what extensions you're allowed to run inside it.

That's fine. Google does web We get that.
But don't pretend they do much else than collect data on us in order to sell ads. Google is just geeky Mad Men.

256 Mb

2 gigs of RAM.

And how much does the iPad have?
256MB which is a little thin for iOS 4.0. IPhone 4 is a prime indicator of minimal memory requirements for 4.x and beyond.
(Note: I don't consider this a real knock against the iPad -- yet -- I'm actually quite impressed that it can hold its own as well as it does. Efficient programming is a good thing on embedded devices.)
Yes iPad obviously does well but it isn't exactly a long term investment. It is in the best tradition of Apple rev one products. That is it breaks the mold, gets a new idea accepted in the marketplace and exposes Apple to minimal risk. Long term though the limited memory will have a significant impact on app growth. On top of that I/O will be updated to iPhone 4 levels which I imagine will keep Apple happy for a couple of years.

In otherwords iPad is fantastic for a rev one device but it is incredibly easy to see where Apple will be taking iPad.

. I guess you've missed the note about how iTunes tracks every purchase you make and Apple are selling that information to ad partners.

.

The difference is that apple isn't insinuating itself into every click to capture the info. Its capturing the results of my conscious decision to interact with iTunes or an iAd. Choice vs subtrufuge. Get it?

I kept trying to tell all of you that Google is going to move beyond Android and focus on Chrome instead. That's why Android is not on this tablet. To Google, Android is a temporary step, but Chrome is the future.

Android is hot right now, but its days are numbered, at least from Google's perspective.

Interesting, but it seems a strategic gaffe for Google and their partners not to leverage Android in a device like this. I guess we have to wait to see the final product before passing judgment but with all the steam Android is picking up, I don't understand maintaining a separate operating system for a tablet device.

This maybe far out but they may be tired of working on just android.... I'm not Saying people are stupid but some people don't realize that android = google, but this is strictly chrome OS and people know chrome as google... Just a thought

I bet many of you have forgotten that apple still has to re-release iOS for iPad, It is supposed to come out in september and my guess a new iLife suite will be in the mix of new up dates for the iPad.

And if google is so far... just copying the iPad then the chrome tablet and the rest of the android tablets will be out dated when that new software comes out, who doesn't want iphoto or a more powerful version of imovie or iweb on the iPad plus features we wont know about. (multitasking on iPad!!!)

Plus there wont be any new hardware for iPad till next year all though it is possible a smaller sized iPad could be in the mix, other wise nothing new and nothing for apple to worry about. If the new software makes the other tables out dated before they are available then its safe to say iPad wins for the year and makes google and the rest of the competition behind for another two years (or at least another 12 months)

Wow the "cult of apple" is out in full force here. Of course t is just typical apple fanboy behavior, defending the complete money sink that is the ifad.

What a mature and profound contribution to the discussion.

This seems like a failed proposition to me, but there's one think I really like about it: it's going to send Balmer up a freaking tree!

The whole reason they buried Netscape was the fear of the browser becoming the operating system-- now it's coming to pass and Microsoft is in no better position to defend against it.

Is it really a threat? No. But that doesn't seem to matter-- it's like the monster under the bed.

Since when is apple a he? Get out of this website and go play with ur buggy ass android phone and enjoy watching ur purchased pc crashed. And if ur trying to compare hardware, apples stuff isn't behind by the consumer standard (have u seen the new mac pros or imacs?) if ur building the computer that is different but apple builds computers for people who don't want to build one themselves u ****. So not a far comparison. You pay for the software on them not just hardware (windows sucks).

Who gives a **** about google products. And why are you giving them the time of day on this web site
