Interesting YouTube video but I couldn't finish watching it(very boring). Looks like a lot of the characteristics of the Iphone have been copied but I will wait until I can handle one to give my verdict.

There are thousands of Windows Mobile games, many of them accelerated 3D games, most of these support hundreds of devices.

To put it simply, you're wrong.

My point is not that these things won't exist, but that they will come much slower than they did for the iPhone and it will take longer for the Google platform to grow than it took for the iPhone.

So I'm saying the Android store will take time to grow. You're telling me that Windows Mobile has thousands of games. That fact is related how, exactly?

I don't see the connection.

Looks cool to me. And since t-mo is blows away att, it will most likely be a better phone, the rest we'll see.

First handset, I see. Why not make it a good one.
Being open and all can be good but from a marketing perspective, if you launch this thing and it's a mediocre device, people will connect that to Android (which doesn't look all too fascinating now, does it).
The handset it butt-ugly.
I agree. Also who is going to buy that ugly a$$ brick? With all this Android talk/hype, I was rather disappointed with the design. It seems to be very important for a phone to be aesthetically pleasing as it helps move the products. It may function well and have tons of apps but I can see this thing having a lot of problems being open especially in the realm of security. I'll stick with my iphone 3g thanks.:apple::D

i like how android has freely movable icons and "widgets" on a sort of desktop...

it is like a good mesh of iphone meets desktop....

and yes... i would definitely install this on my iphone if apple doesn't keep up.

But people don't have to download it. Diligent users would only download apps from reputable sources and only to fill a purpose they want. You could say the same about Windows software that is made to purposely kill your system.

Not exactly. (btw, in general I agree that the app store should be more open).

There is an implicit "trust" when you are downloading from the official "Google Android Market". That's expected to be a "reputable" source, at least for non-techie users.

In response: Apple is now hard at work on its next iPhone-based operating system (officially iPhone Software 3.0) ---- code named BLADE RUNNER.

Blade Runner is the Android killer (Harrison Ford movie). :D :apple:

I saw the UI screenshots and they look horrible, as much as WinMobile...so no, they are not for me.

If I have to buy a new phone, it's gonna be an iPhone, period.

Look and Are - Horrible are two entirely different items. It's nice to be around so many judgemental folks. Image is everything.

I think Google is jumpin' on the bandwagon a bit late. Way too many models to choose from, but right in line with what they might sell at WalMart or Target. I wonder how much more Google stock will plummet after tomorrow? Pretty big gamble on Google's part, and their future looks pretty dismal IMHO...

No they're not. A user-interface cannot work well if it looks horrible to the user. I challenge you to come up with a single piece of software that you think looks horrile, but you still love to use.

Apple Newton !
Apple's Classic OS looked like ****, people loved it.

Astroids
PAC MAN
Dig Dug

basically anything in the 8-bit or prior era.

Linux and DOS, pre GUI era? People loved them and still covet them. Some Unix/Linux users still prefer the command line to a GUI.

I think anything Google does will at least draw enough attention to get Android off the ground and running. Now that's not to say they won't run into problems down the road, but having the massive amount of resources that Google has can't be a bad thing. I think we should all hope for the best as that is what will eventually benefit the consumer. ;)

Keynote speaker…

BORING AS HELL!

Everything is "kinda fun" or "kinda cool" according to this guy --> I want a phone that is VERY FUN and VERY VERY COOL! He even said "pointless but fun" about something he was demo-ing... wow. Amazing.

Iphone Clone that is all this demo shows.

Snooz-o-rooney
Snooz-a-thon
Snooz-ola
Just plain Snooze.

I'm sorry, but you're going to have to explain what "looks horrible" about any of those programs.

A command line is not ugly. It's simple and elegant. Astroids is not difficult to see or understand. Pac Man is fantastically clear and easy to use.

I'm not sure you know what a horrible user interface looks like if this is what you think I'm talking about.

I don't think you understand the difference between USABILITY and beauty. You said it LOOKS horrible; meaning you used your VISION to feebly attempt to bash the USABILITY of the OS. This is simply not possible without hands on experience. PACMAN may have been simple to use but it "LOOKS HORRIBLE".

People who would have bought an iPhone will still buy an iPhone, or future improved versions of iPhones. And people that hated Apple to begin with, they never were a potential Apple customer anyways, so those are the ones that would buy the Andriod. Google sales will be fine. And I don't see it cannibalizing Apple sales too much.

If anything, Google phones will cannibalize non-Apple devices.... since Google phones will be a direct purchase choice REPLACING phones in the same market space and same online stores like T-Mobile Store, etc. So Google will most likely cripple sales of dying struggling breeds like Sony-Ericcson, Nokia phones, and the no-longer-relevant Motorola (Hello Moto!!) cellphones. Google phone looks physically a lot like the Blackberry with the keyboard scheme, so it might send a punch in the nose to Blackberry sales. As a horde of Blackberry loyalists suddenly drop their berries, and see something that LOOKS a LOT like their berries, but is newer with more novelty factor. And so many of them will at least be tempted to try out the Android. Ouchie for Blackberry sales. ;)

...
The different screen sizes isn't such a bit deal... look at Java apps on mobile devices today.

Exactly. Look at Java apps on mobile devices of today. Do I want the apps of today for the next couple of years on my mobile device? Nope.

I know that the iPhone has a lot of flaws (especially in the approval process), but these application don't seem like mobile applications, which is what I'm expecting from Android apps.

I'm sure there will be a few standout apps that are very well designed... for two or three devices, but not for them all.

You said it LOOKS horrible; meaning you used your VISION to feebly attempt to bash the USABILITY of the OS.

I haven't said anything like that. Perhaps you are meaning to respond to someone other than me, because I didn't bash anything.

I said that the way a program (any program) looks directly affects how usable it is. That's pretty much it. Although you could apply that lesson to the Android OS, I certainly didn't.

I haven't even watched the YouTube video, so I really doubt I'd be commenting on something I haven't seen!

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/525.18.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.1.1 Mobile/5F136 Safari/525.20)

This is just a speedbump on the iPhones road to glory.

You put that very nicely indeed. Agreed 10/10

Don't forget to add Dope Wars to the list.
Hmm I wonder if that is on the App store. Gotta check :p:D
