Round is such a stupid form.

Round wristwatches were that way because they were easier to manufacture and the minute hand determined the diameter.

But the way we get info today is rectilinear. A round display because it can’t display full height and width without cutting off corners is forced to compress images to fit them within a square circumscribed by a circle.

It’s not ideal. There’s a reason tvs and smartphones aren’t round. Nobody outside the silent service likes looking at a little round screen.

Obviously just your opinion.
With all the hype about the new Apple Watch Ultra, somehow I cannot picture my Garmin Fenix in a rectangular shape.
Then again I can't quite picture my AW7 in circular form.
Currently I own several watches, some standard, some smart; the Apple Watch 7 is the only rectangular one.

Personally, I will be interested to see just what Google comes out with.

I actually quite like the design, but it seems like a round iteration of the Apple Watch with some minor tweaks in the details.

And I bet all their band makers (if that is such a thing) have to start from scratch.

Ouch!

Like my Fenix is only a watch.
If you reread my post I didn’t say that a digital watch couldn’t be round, just that is not a good design decision.

Garmin chose to stick with a traditional design for a specific market.

If you look at the Fenix, it displays the very things that make a round digital watch that is designed to act as an information source a bad design idea. The Fenix appears to be aimed a specific demographic which allows trade offs to meet their needs, but it still appears to limited data to one item set and cuts of text in the upper and lower areas, based on the photos at their website.

You can make a round digital watch but there are inherent limitations that make it a bad choice for use to display information such as texts, emails, etc.

Again,YMMV.

Does this watch have any redeeming factors? Samsung has a very strong offering for less money and is almost solely responsible for resuscitating Wear OS from the dead, Apple's Ultra is a really nice offering, and Google... I can't really think of anything great to say. These guys seem to have lost touch with reality.

It's a good looking watch. I can think about using it during formel occasions. I don't bother about bezel as it can serve it's purpose as just a designer watch. Hope no one asks about time though.

By the way, it's not bezel around. It's called Dynamic ring!

This watch cannot even display three pieces of info without cropping. Who would green-light such a design?

Not sure about the bezels - will need to see it in person before judging. It's possible they can integrate it well and it's a non-issue.

I personally think that analog watch faces on a rectangle apple watch look a bit silly, so the Pixel would (in my mind) do that better. The rest of the UI makes more sense on a rectangle screen.

But overall, I really like the look of this watch. Kind of reminds me of one of these...(and I need a watch face like this ASAP).

I love the Ressence watches. However they are actual mechanical timepieces….and they also cost about $35k.

If you look at the tech specs the 31mm screen is actually 4mm bigger than the 41mm Apple Watch width. The 41mm for Apple is the diag dimension and Googles 41mm is the total width of the circle. When you do give up the 4mm in height that the square version gives. Don't mock bezels since an iPhone still has thick bezels too.

I like the looks of the classic circular design but it’s not too practical at displaying information.

Sometimes I think people go a liiiitle overboard with claims of copying.

BUT, there are ways to stage your press shots that aren’t a clear and direct aping of another’s advertising shots.

That profiles shot, with the bands looping, is a direct copy of apples presentation of their 1st gen watch. That exact photo was turned into icons, and used all over apples original apple.com launch.

All they had to do was turn the damn thing a few degrees but clearly some exec at Google slapped down a picture of apples watch advertising and said “give me that”.

Very pretty watch. Takes a LOT of cues from the Apple Watch, but overall, it is a fantastic design.
