There is a rejected prototype in a drawer deep inside Apples mothership that looks just like this. Looks like we will never see a round Apple Watch. A thin Casio style one would be nice. The bubble glass look would have been better around the aqua interface days. But apple needs to work on products that don’t end up getting cracked and scratched up more than designing them in ways that are prone to that sort of failure.
This google watch is going to suffer from the same issues. Better be cheap enough to replace every few years.

This looks ugly and FAT...
why do people keep designing round Smart watches?, information needs square screens...
they are just trying to be different.
Looks like Google reads the MR forums for design advice.

That is an order of magnitude chunkier than the render.

And yeah, “left behind” really stretches the credibility.
The renders are probably just pulling the 2012 iMac "look how thin this is at this one axis" trick. But in this case, trying to hide the size from one angle just makes it look waaaaay worse from every other angle. It's chunky, but smartwatches still have to be at present. But man it doesn't deal with the bulk as nicely as the Apple Watch.

Apple Watch looks terrible, especially with the silicone band. This is one of the better smartwatch designs. Having used an Apple Watch for a year, I really didn’t thinking provided enough value over something more basic like a Withings (which looks a million times better), or even a regular watch using a chest strap to track workouts.

It really is amazing how well the Apple Watch hides its thickness. If it wasn’t such a “luxury” purchase, and not a “commodity” like the iPhone, it might get more “oohs” and “ahhs” from the public.

What a master level example of good design.

Did you really just start your paragraph with “the Apple Watch looks terrible”, and end with “chest strap”?

so you are telling me someone left a watch, that you normally wear on a wrist at all times behind and the person who found it just happens to know almost immediately that it is a Google Watch prototype? Sounds like PR to me

There's a good chance, if this is real, that it was done on purpose to drum up hype.

It does look a little fat, but honeslty looks pretty damn cool. Looks really Apple-like to be honest. It will be nice for there to be some more competition in the smart watch field. Everyone benefits.

Innovation brought to you by google. Hmm let’s see watches are successful for some, let’s make one. How can we market it? Oh let’s copy that iPhone 4 thing, I mean, how about if we “accidentally “ leave it in a restaurant? Great idea

If it does more than the Apple Watch, has a better screen and more storage, gets twice the battery life, and won’t sell your data (LOL); I’d consider it

I don’t know if the Apple Watch is especially thick. It’s thick relative to a quartz super slim fashion watch, sure, but it’s downright svelte compared to mechanical watch mechanisms. And those super slim fashion watches typically sacrifice to get that slim, either using specialty batteries or LCD/LED displays instead of analog hands. (And there’s good reason to believe that analog faces are faster to read than digital watches, if you know how to read an analog clock, it might have something to do with geometric processing in our brains or about analog watches conveying context that numeric time displays do not convey.)

While neither that hardware design, nor anything Google, is for me, at all, those engulfed in Google’s ecosystem - of which there are way more than are engulfed in Apple’s ecosystem - will likely be pumped to have a Google-first wrist device to add to their arsenal, regardless of hardware aesthetic. They’ll sell enough to make any R&D worth it. And by “enough” I mean “a lot.”

Yeah
It’s as if Google didn’t even try… they just took AW and made it round.
That's a little unfair on Google. I mean clearly they sat down in a board room and used the usual design by committee method to come up with a wonderful design. Then they took it to the lowest bidding mass manufacturer and found out what they had off the shelf that looked like a watch and fudged the whole thing together with compromises galore into what looks like a cheap seaside souvenir rock. Then patted each other on the back, got thoroughly drunk and left it in a bar.

I’m hoping the band will cover the worst of the crimes against aesthetics like it did for earlier Apple Watches. Android users have indeed been waiting for a watch that can match the capabilities of Apple Watch. I hope it will work well. I’ve come close to making an Android my primary phone on a few occasions, but my dependence on Apple Watch has kept me with Apple.

I still want a round Apple Watch. Suspect many users use AW just like me - for health/fitness and very basic time/timer/reminder functions that all can be conveniently done in a round UI. I NEVER type, look at pictures or do any other advanced tasks that would benefit from the square form factor...
