My father's father has unlimited data and hasn't upgraded since the original phone, which is pretty cool because it means my grandfather is grandfathered. I assume there is no way he can transfer that plan to me right?

If you upgrade online through most authorized dealers such as best buy and Apple their systems no longer let you keep unlimited data.

Att however still does. So if you want to keep the data plan preorder through att.

No. You would have to take over his line and number and he would get your line and number.

One of the smartest moves I made this year was to drop the unlimited on 2 of our phones. 10gb shared data. Eliminated the overage that the phone with 2gb had. Picked up tethering and dropped ipad plan. $100 a month savings.

Is this true?

I heard you will still have the option to keep the plan when pre ordering though Apple.

Doesn't know what he's saying - if you have an unlimited plan tied to a line that's eligible, then go ahead and throw a 5s in an online shopping cart from apple.com. It gives you the option, it wouldn't be any different preordering a 6.

Yup. I just confirmed this for my line. All good to keep the unlimited. As I use 30Gbs of data a month no way am I getting rid of this.

From what I understand, the unlimited is indeed still in place and can even be moved to the next plan. This is, of course, on an individual plan and not a shared plan. So the only difference between the contract and Next is buying subsidized and on a 2-year hitch or buying full price with the option of upgrading more frequently.

All this back and forth with these reps, I feel I can be a rep now :D

I was told you can apply trade in credit to new phones that are on contract but not on the next BUT these reps say one thing to another.

So bottom line, I highly doubt the unlimited is going away as the common denominator with all the reps is that the unlimited will still exist and warned not to get rid of it because you can't go back.

my unlimited data plan seemed have been taken away..

I order via att website and was not presented with any option to choose anything.. in the confirmation email it says the unlimited plan was removed... :(

Whoa.

I ordered from Apple, chose "replace my current phone", was given no other ATT options.

A minute later I got my confirmation email from Apple and on it it specified my dataplan as 'unlimited'.

Same as bolt for me. Ordered through app- unlimited specified both before I hit confirm and in confirmation email.

Ordered through apple app. Not only was I able to keep the unlimited data but also my 5$ 200 text....which I was never able to before. Every time I had to call and get them to add it, and every time they initially told me they weren't sure if it can be added back.

Im 2nd guessing as to whether i should have done the next plan so i can upgrade vs waiting 2yrs, have a full "real" 10gb plan vs being throttled under my current unlimited plan & being able to tether on the real 10gb plan.

But when i ordered my 6+ this am i selected 2 yr.

Single line, unlimited data (average 8gb), typical bill is $90.

Is there anyway at this point to switch over to next even though I preordered through apple?

I am the same as you except my email never said it was removed. I called and they said I still have unlimited. Also I was never given a screen to choose a new plan. So I'm thinking I still have it.

Do these carriers know why they are hated so much now ? All these cheap little tricks they do to fool people. Feels like I'm dealing with the devil here.

What did you upgrade from? I was upgrading from a 4S. I called att and they told me that my unlimited plan has no expiration date and that it was "removed" before i won't be using "Data Unlimited on 4G for iPhone 4S" for the ip6. I hope what she told me is legit... I see no reason why they would have taken it away though.

44% of ATTs customers are on UDPs
They will never ever ever do away with it, at risk of jeprodizing that amount of customer loyalty.

They will loose more money getting into the cutthroat marketing that the other 3 carries use to steal customers from eachother, than they would make off of forcing tiered data plans.
By letting their existing customers keep their data plans, they basically keep half of their customer base.

When I went from a 4 to a 5, they removed my unlimited plan and replaced it with the unlimited LTE for iPhone plan. I would think they would just transfer you from the non-LTE plan to the LTE one this time as well.

The rule is, unless you change from the UDP to something else willingly, it's still yours.

This is EXACTLY what happened to me. I have been trying to get through to CS for hours.

Ordered via the Apple Store app on the iPad.

Order confirmation emails states I'm still on my old 700 minute/month, unlimited data plan back when I had my iPhone 3G

Ordered via the iPad Apple Store app this AM. My current unlimited/200 text plan populated and price before checkout and I had to agree to ATT terms for 2 year contract.
