What a joke….Absolutely ridiculous! ?

If you weren't a fan of Apple's Smart Case that comes with the AirPods Max, high-end luxury brand Gucci is here for you with its own case for the headphones priced at $980.

Gucci's "Ophidia case for AirPods Max" is an online exclusive that brings "vintage and contemporary together through its archive-inspired design elements. Playing with the contrast between past and present, the inside of the accessory is printed with 'Hodiernum'—a Latin word that means 'belonging to the present day.'"

Gucci says the case is made from environmentally friendly materials, features a shoulder strap, brown leather details, and a snap button to secure the AirPods Max in place. Like many AirPods Max accessories, Gucci's case exposes the AirPods Max's canopy allowing for easy carrying.

AirPods Max is priced at $550, meaning Gucci's case is nearly double the cost of the product it is designed for. Gucci does offer another case for standard headphones that costs $920, but it isn't designed for the AirPods Max specifically.

There’s not much to understand. It’s there to show that you have money. If it cost less, they wouldn’t buy it. They could also spend less and get better quality and better looking stuff custom made for them, but then no one would know it cost a lot.

That reminds of something I heard while auto racing:

"You can go for show, or go for go..."

The good thing about Gucci, etc. it's mother natures way of warning you someone has high ongoing maintenance costs.

Does it come with a $29.95 cloth to wipe it with?

Or maybe it's a $99.95 bedazzled cleaning cloth instead

but...damn, it looks like someone shot and skinned Grandma's couch

I mean, you’re obviously not buying it to have a case — you’re buying it to have the Gucci case.

You think this is a lot? Look at the price of Hermès leather accessories…

if you are not internationally famous like beyonce and can't afford a private jet, then this bag is not for you. Sorry. Poor people will look dumb on it.

Serious question: Does this case enable the Ultra Low Power state of AirPods Max like the included Smart Case?

When I see someone wear Gucci outside showing off "I'm rich" is just cringe for me.

Real rich people don't show off like that and in fact they live in a real humble life, they will buy expensive items that has value. Gucci has no value just for show.

Overpriced accessories for overpriced headphones... not sure why y'all mad

It's stuff like that makes Apple a little more uncool by each day, they initiated this by making a bra purse and now Gucci makes this. I just can't, this is borderline embarrassing.

Apple's bra case was bad enough and Gucci takes it next level. Surely Gucci must be taking the piss at Apple's bra case. Maybe Gucci hired Apple's designers to realise their dream case. ??

The kind of rich people who stay rich. Don't just buy random expensive junk because they can. That's how a lot of people who become rich end up broke a couple years after their big paycheck stops rolling in.

Their items are all emblazoned with a logo. It looks like it's all designed to stand out. In a horrible way. For people to advertise that they have money. Which leads me to believe their target group is really people who want others to think they are wealthy. People making a decent income and swimming in debt.

Gucci sells to people that want to look rich not actual rich people. Hence the monthly payment s

This is a common misconception. The overwhelming majority of people who buy name brand "luxury" are actually poorer to middle class in an attempt to look richer than they are. Celebrities etc all get this stuff for free to convince fans this is what is needed to look rich.

Your comments are spot on. Have you read The Millionaire Next Door per chance?

I really like fashion, design, art, aesthetic, individuality, expression. Fully accepted I'm not the target audience for Gucci and recognize they have a huge and loyal following. Well aware that one person's $980 is another person's $9.80.
That said, this thing is friggin' wild. I wonder how many units they expect to move. Dozens? Hundreds? Thousands? More? What say the crew here?

One would have to sell a kidney to afford that. It's kinda funny that Gucci's website says "monthly payments available". The average Gucci customer has enough cash to not need monthly payments; only people who waste their money on luxury despite having an average income would need this.
No they don't. The typical Gucci customer is not rich at all. This is a brand that attracts rednecks wanting to pretend they are special, and wanting the experience of everyone thinking they are rich. They save and scrimp to add to their little Gucci collection. I know, I had a housemate like this, she was from a full on redneck background, worked as a shop assistant, was near on broke, but had delusions of grandeur. A couple of times per year she will have saved enough to buy another Gucci item. Tragic.

Genuinely classy people don't buy brands as trashy as Gucci, there are plenty of much more subtle, and higher quality, brands.

Some of you spend thousands of dollars on a computer to surf the internet. What’s the difference?

The absolutely very first thought that jumped into my mind when I saw that picture was to do a quick mental check that it wasn’t April 1st because that looks so like an April Fool’s joke to me. It isn’t April 1st though so sadly it looks like this is a real product.

Would rather spend the coin on some better headphones.
