i have a good gucci mens fragrance though not interested in the bag
if this sells more aapl product and gives it a bling vibe then i'm ok with it

I think it's silly that the protection for the headphones costs twice as much as the headphones.

If you weren't a fan of Apple's Smart Case that comes with the AirPods Max, high-end luxury brand Gucci is here for you with its own case for the headphones priced at $980.

Gucci's "Ophidia case for AirPods Max" is an online exclusive that brings "vintage and contemporary together through its archive-inspired design elements. Playing with the contrast between past and present, the inside of the accessory is printed with 'Hodiernum'—a Latin word that means 'belonging to the present day.'"

Gucci says the case is made from environmentally friendly materials, features a shoulder strap, brown leather details, and a snap button to secure the AirPods Max in place. Like many AirPods Max accessories, Gucci's case exposes the AirPods Max's canopy allowing for easy carrying.

AirPods Max is priced at $550, meaning Gucci's case is nearly double the

As an Italian myself, it's so heartbreaking to see what cringy end has Gucci gotten to...
It was a very tasteful and respectable brand back in the day.

How far back is "back in the day"? Gucci has long been known for having some "over-the-top" (tacky) and "overpriced" products.

One would have to sell a kidney to afford that. It's kinda funny that Gucci's website says "monthly payments available". The average Gucci customer has enough cash to not need monthly payments; only people who waste their money on luxury despite having an average income would need this.

Not anymore, the average Gucci customer these days is the same as the average Apple user. That needs monthly payments to afford it.

There’s a lot that could be said about the type of human that would purchase and wear an item like this in public (or any overtly obvious designer garbage). So much so that nothing needs to be said, for the one wearing it would feel it in the gaze they invoke from others. Nothing positive

I call bull on this. You wouldn't carry this in public for 5 to 10 minutes if Gucci paid you $980?

Do you make $5,880 to $11,760 per hour?

I'd do it any day and every day.
Hahaha for 5-10 min I would, of course. What I meant was on a regular basis, e.g. to work. I find it sooooo ugly ?

I hate everything Gucci stands for (performative wealth for its own sake) just about as much as anyone could, but I'll play conceptual devil's advocate here:

If--and this is purely hypothetical, since I know nothing about leather or leatherwork--it costs about $1000 per roughly-purse-sized bag to responsibly raise cows for leather while paying small ranchers a good living wage, have small-shop tanners produce high-quality leather while getting paid a good living wage, and have artisans sew together the bags while getting paid a good living wage, then I can accept that $980 is a reasonable price for a small leather bag.

And if--again, purely hypothetical--you have plenty of money and like really nice handmade things, then I can accept paying $980 for a small leather bag. To be sure, I have paid quite a bit of money for things that cost much more than functionally-equivalent "standard" items because I think they're really nice and appreciate the way in which they were produced.

The lesser problem here is that, unless Apple decides to be REALLY consistent with their headphone form factor, the really expensive case you're buying will have absolutely no use, period, when the design changes and all existing headsets age past the point of usefulness.

The greater problem is that the vast majority of purchasers are buying them because they cost $1000 and other people can tell on sight that they do. Just like Louis Vuitton and all the other "brand bags", if the pattern wasn't immediately identifiable as Gucci to other people, almost nobody would want it. Conversely, as long as it cost $1000 and others can tell, it doesn't really matter even if it's made out of cheap pleather by sweatshop labor and falls apart in a month.

Every time I see the claim that I'm some kind of status-symbol junkie because I own an expensive Apple phone or Apple computer and want people to know about it, I would point them to the fact that my iPhone is in a nondescript wallet case without a single logo visible anywhere, and unless you're looking over my shoulder while I'm using it with enough knowledge to recognize the OS and notch size, you would have no idea what model of phone it is, or even what brand. Likewise with the computer, the number of people who are not married to me who have even seen my current iMac after it went into my house are exactly zero, and number who have seen my current MacBook Pro are exactly two.

Certainly not true for all iPhone or Mac users, but for many of us it's not a sports car to drive around so people can ooh and ahh, it's either a sleeper or a sports car you drive on a private track and never show off to anybody.
