Other then generating fake homework papers, what can AI do?
AI delivers answer's not Ad’s when asked a question. All Google search delivers, those Ad’s that pay the most get top billing. Has become totally useless and a waste of time. AI delivers!

Is anyone else barely using AI tools because you're just so used to doing things the "old way"?
Keep doing things that way, you'll be better off cognitively in the long-run. AI is a very much an if it aint broke don't fix it situation, sovling for problems that weren't there. Creeps me out how many people are so uncritically onboard with the incoming wave of tech (AI, automation, VR etc), all of which removes us yet another step from the people around us and is ultimately only a tool for an increased flow of capital and control.

You cannot be serious to publish this. Gurman and Bloomberg couldn’t get the date of the iPhone event correct but we’re supposed to believe they have “sources within Apple”? Cook would have axed anyone feeding them tips long ago.

you really don't know???

I mean, AI might not be useful for your work or the way you think, but to suggest that's all it's good for is either terribly misinformed or you're just trolling people here.

I haven't used AI much, but a few weeks ago, I had to create a power of attorney letter in German (I speak it but not perfectly and I don't know German law). AI helped me do in 10 mins what would probably taken about 2 hours and I got a great letter that a German lawyer friend of mine proofread and said was excellent.

So yes, there are MANY use cases for AI. Experiment, play, and have fun :)
There are already lawyers who have used AI for briefs with false citations. How many people do you think will have domain experts read their AI creation before releasing it?

2 years is a lot, but Apple isn't the only tech giant that was caught off-guard with ChatGPT and scrambled to catch up. As Cook just mentioned, Apple is more about being the best than being the first, and considering its track record, I trust that Apple Intelligence will in time become as good, if not better, than rival offerings (as we've seen with iPhone vs Blackberry, Silicon vs Intel, etc.).

I rather they clean up the OS and make it more efficient, than allow me to have full blown conversations with Siri like ChatGBT. It’s fun, but what is it doing for me. And if they’re 2 years behind, where are all the AI phones. Meta Glasses aren’t cutting it.

It's only a matter of time before AI becomes ad-driven, if internet history is any indication. Tech giants don't usually invest billions without profit in mind.

Some Apple employees believe that the company's in-house generative AI technology powering Apple Intelligence is more than two years behind industry leaders, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

apple-intelligence-black.jpeg

Writing in his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman's sources within Apple tell him that the company's own studies suggest its upcoming AI features lack the "wow factor" of rival technologies currently offered by the likes of Google, OpenAI, and Meta.

For example, internal studies at Apple reportedly show that OpenAI's ChatGPT is 25% more accurate than the new Siri and can answer 30% more questions. Of course, Apple has already conceded as much, given that part of its strategy includes a partnership with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its operating systems, providing users with the option to tap into greater generative AI assistance if they want it.

Despite the setback, Gurman notes that Apple is in the unique position of presiding over a vast ecosystem of tightly integrated devices, which gives it the advantage of being able to quickly deploy new technologies across its product line. This could prove advantageous as the company works to close the AI gap with competitors, and its history of successfully entering new markets suggests it shouldn't be counted out.

Apple's latest iPhone 16 series supports Apple Intelligence, as does its Macs and its iPad lineup (with the exception of the entry-level model) following last week's iPad mini 7 announcement. The first set of AI features are expected to roll out to these devices next week.

Meanwhile, a new iPhone SE 4 with Apple Intelligence support is set to launch in March, with an AI-capable entry-level iPad said to be coming later in the same year. In addition, Apple is working on bringing the technology to Vision Pro, and given that AI notification summaries can be delivered to Apple Watch, Gurman suggests that by early 2026, "nearly every Apple device with a screen" will run Apple Intelligence.

Personally, I hope it is at least 2 years behind!

The latest chatgpt is fantastic. I use it almost every day. It’s night and day from where it was even 6 months ago. And Google’d AI implementation is quite good. In fact, very good. Also, chatgpt didn’t come out of nowhere. It’s been known for at least 3 years at this point, and insiders like Apple have known about ML work for at least 5 years. Inexcusable they never began working on this until recently.

But if generative is so flawed (a rightful point): https://www.macrumors.com/2024/10/14/apple-study-reveals-flaws-in-ai-reasoning/

Then Apple should not continue to waste money pursuing it. So, which way is it?

(Current corporate craze over such a flawed technology just also shows the lie of 'fiduciary responsibility'.)

Also to note is the 'Death March' Apple pursued for a decade in pursuit of the Apple Car, wasting billions of dollars.

Lol at Apple commissioning a study to support their failure to begin work on ML as early as their rivals.

The main thing I use is rephrasing emails to C-Level folks with ChatGPT, but beyond that, I don’t really feel the need for it in my day-to-day.

You must be thinking that the AI tools are only for text-based use. They will be in most apps, even Apple Music and in Photos. Today "photoshop" features require at least some minimal skills but later you can say "Siri, remove the utility pole and make Kattie's jacket pink"

Or "Siri, find the car repair invoice for last spring, when does the warranty end?"

yep
"Siri, show me the vacation pictures from March 15th"

Nice future state would be device control as well.

"Siri, clear my browser cache and reboot my phone tonight at 2AM."

I really hope it can answer questions about my phone. For example, "How do I change the font on my home screen?" or "How much storage do I have left on my phone" or "How do I make a sticker in messages?" or "Turn off notifications for this app." or "Does this phone support satellite messaging"

I feel like we're talking about taking people's jobs, but it can't even do the easiest possible stuff yet.

Or with a growth mindset

It’s quite literally being used right to make businesses more efficient and allow employees to do more with less. It should increase wealth as general as we become more efficient across a wide range of tasks allowing people to focus less on relative tasks and more on meaningful work. New jobs we haven’t even imagined yet will be possible as AI extends to more and more fields.
Its replacing jobs. no business is going to see AI and not thing cost savings and fewer work force, ergo less taxes less hassle less training less costs.
Anyway a discussion for elsewher.

Easily 2 years behind if not more. Siri is absolutely hopeless “I’ve found this on the web”
This comment makes no sense! You’re comparing the current Siri, even if you’re maybe using the 18.1 beta, and acting like that’s what this is? Or is 2 years behind? Makes no sense.

Apple's limitations with Siri were related to privacy and security, it's nothing like what you're describing here.

I was with you until this part. People keep saying that, but I just don't see it. Apple's limitations with Siri were that they bought it from someone else, realized pretty quickly it was not as good as they thought it was and couldn't be meaningfully improved, and just left it that way.

I've already given Apple willingly all the information they needed to make Siri good for me. I even opted in to letting them use my input to improve Siri, so there goes the privacy angle. And now they're finally about to start using it. Now that it works they call it "context aware" but for the last many years they could have used the information they have in Calendar, Contacts, Maps, etc etc to be more useful for me.

Google went down this road a little with Assistant back when Siri was still somewhat competitive. But then being Google they saw something shiny and got distracted. And that was it for competition. So nobody cared until OpenAI came along and scared everyone.
