"Gurman also believes that Apple is also still planning a new higher-end iMac with a 32-inch display, but that isn’t scheduled to launch until late 2024 or 2025"
So a bigger imac is still in works

If it's just an M2, why did they wait so long?

Not as profitable as other stuff? Profit drives all at modern AAPL.

My guess is it WILL be M2. Roll out anything M3 now and then months from now the wonder product launching with "old technology" makes little sense. However, update the last M1 to M2 and the holiday season marketing can be "Now ALL of our Macs have our latest & greatest tech inside: buy now!"

Through the business mind lens, I don't know what makes more sense than that... unless M3 across the board is ready and the wonder product will also be upgraded with M3.

Roll out 1 or 2 Macs with M3 now and all other Macs immediately get the "dated tech" psychological tag... encouraging all who can wait a bit longer TO wait for M3 versions. That's NOT how you maximize the most lucrative quarter's sales.

Please update all peripherals to USB C! Threw some tea over my Magic Keyboard recently and want to replace it but really want to phase out all my lightning ports.

This will simply happen when Lightning inventory thins out, one product at a time. This is not really news worthy, nor would it seem to command much press. As lightning inventory thins, quietly replace with USB-C versions. Eventually, all "old" inventory is sold out at full price- and full profit- without any disruption of new inventory not yet in stock.

Probably branded PRO and priced like the old iMac Pro, which is much higher than most are expecting (because they are recalling the old "stating at..." pricing of iMac 27").

My own best guess is "starting at..." at least 2X the old iMac 27" level and that with specs too low to be comfortable by anyone who gets minimum RAM and SSD shortcomings. Nicely specced (upgrades to starter RAM and SSD) gets it right up and into former iMac Pro price levels.

We'll see of course... but I see no way to have ASD with stand option MSRP'ing towards $2K and rolling out a bigger ASD screen with a whole Mac inside, accompanied by a free* keyboard and mouse for a "starting at..." price of about $2K. So is ASD going to get a huge discount to MSRP or is it the floor price and an iMac "bigger" will need to add-on the cost of the Mac guts + keyboard + mouse + bigger screen premium (if bigger than 27")? We know Apple well. So place your bets.

1) An M2 IMac released at this stage would be disappointing - mainly because it would presumably delay the release of an M3 IMac for another year at least

2) There is no 27” iMac coming. There is clearly a 32” iMac coming in 12-18 months. Those waiting for a big iMac have a clear line of sight towards one. If you want a 27” screen - Apple Studio Display is your way to go.

Ah, the nostalgia for the old Apple, constantly struggling financially, on the road to ruin after IBM entered the PC market, death spiral clocks being started on a regular basis, the Diesel hiding under his CEO desk, being bailed out by Bill Gates, the Newton, the Cube. Making a profit is such a dirty business when you purport to Think Different but have to make shareholders happy.

My uneducated guess is M2 iMac spec bump and that's it.
No. It would be monumentally stupid to only put in an M2 after all this time. And if an M2 then why not release it earlier?
who da heck uses 24 inch monitor these days.....
Lots of people. I’m in retail and lots of people buy 24s.

Yes, it would be very disappointing. After all this time I’d be more disappointed to see an M2 iMac released within the next couple of weeks then waiting till next spring for an M3.

Apple is planning a Mac-focused product launch, likely including the announcement of a refreshed 24-inch iMac, for the end of this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

imac-purple.jpg

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that Apple is "planning a Mac-centered product launch around the end of this month" that could see the the release of a refreshed 24-inch iMac model, which is long overdue a hardware update. The current model launched in April 2021 and it is the only current-generation Mac left with the M1 chip. Gurman has repeatedly said that Apple's next iMac will skip the M2 and feature the M3 chip instead, but he declined to mention which chip the new machine will feature in this newsletter.

Gurman noted that Apple retail stores are now in short supply of the iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and many configurations now will not arrive until mid-November, in what he believes is "a clear sign that something is about to happen" regarding these three machines. He added that Apple has "made headway" on new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. While the current, M2 Pro and M2 Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models launched in January, he thinks that an "additional update the same year would be unusual, but not inconceivable."

Gurman believes that the upcoming Mac announcement will take place on Monday, October 30 or Tuesday, October 31, followed by Apple's earnings call on Thursday, November 2. He does not expect any of the new Macs to feature major changes other than new processors, but mused that there could be minor improvements to their displays.

Gurman also reiterated rumors that next-generation MacBook Air models with M3 chips will not launch until early 2024 and that a larger "pro" version of the iMac with a 32-inch display and a new design is tabled for late 2024 or 2025. Further Mac redesigns are also likely when Apple begins adding touchscreens to the Mac further in the future.

I can't wait to hear about an old 24" iMac with M2, and maybe hear about the M3 19" iMac finally coming in 2028.

iMac has been tossed off the cliff at Apple HQ lol

I'm wondering what all the people with a 27'' Intel iMac are going to do now that the 2017 model can't be updated to Sonoma. I doubt that most of them would be happy with a 24'' iMac. I guess macMini or Studio and a larger display as it does not look as if there is going to be a new 27'' iMac in the lineup.
Mac Studio + Studio Display is the way to go. It’s cheaper and way more flexible upgrade wise.

I said nothing about not making or deserving to make profit. I was best guessing an answer why iMac is last to maybe get the M2 upgrade. That is my best guess: among all other Macs, iMac MAY be least profitable and thus gets last priority on the upgrade train. Whether that's true or not is unknown... but the alternative answers become stuff like product neglect, attention distraction, too little delegation to get it done sooner than this, etc. and/or there was some plan to have multiple M3 Macs to launch in the Fall but something happened to slow all that down, so M2 iMac is the fallback plan... perhaps solely as a little added cash grab during the holiday season. Also unknown. Maybe this was a genius timing plan all along working right on schedule... and iMac M2 was always intended to launch in OCT or NOV of 2023.

So if they don't make the "monumentally stupid" decision and put in an M3 now, will the Vpro launch months from now with M2 be ultra-monumentally stupid? And why does anyone worried about "latest & greatest" buy any of the OTHER Macs during this holiday season- the most lucrative selling season of the year- if ONE of them clearly illustrates that M3 replacements are incoming... soon?

I fully grasp looking at it through a consumer lens and wanting M3 iMac now... even M3 iMac "bigger" now... but look through the seller lens and it all looks very different. Why put buying obstacles up for those shopping for other Macs? Some would certainly delay purchases to wait for M3 versions. How do we roll out M3 now, stir the press up about how much of an advance it is in a dozen ways... and then months from now, roll out the new wonder product with M2 and not expect to be ripped for pushing old, outdated technology in an "expensive" new product?

Best guess: M2 iMac in the next few weeks. Else, a M3 surprise likely means Vpro gets the M3 upgrade too. And if M3 iMac, I would have to assume surprise M3 updates to the more popular sellers like the MBs too. I just can't see them risking some holiday sales by non-iMac prospects being motivated to delay their purchase to wait for M3 in the Mac they want.

My younger daughter has 21.5 4K 2017 iMac that I purchased used about a year ago. She would get ecstatic if I upgraded her system to 24" iMac, but right now the only thing I plan to upgrade is the slow HDD. Conveniently I didn't realize until a week or two ago, that I had 1 TB SSD from an old computer that has been sitting in a drawer for few years.

While it would be great if we get the M3 iMac and M3 Pro/Max MacBook Pro updates in one fell swoop, it seems doubtful.

I suspect we are getting M2/M2 Pro 24” iMacs because M3 is delayed. I also think the MacBook Pros are going to be centered around the removal of the touch bar model finally, with the new body design getting a cheaper version centered around M2 (similar to what the touch bar model was to it‘s prior design). The 14/16” MacBook Pros will likely get a very small refresh, maybe slightly brighter displays in SDR (only 500 nits still) or even WiFi 7.

As for the rumors, MacOkatara was the only one perfectly correct about the iPad/Apple Pencil refresh…and they also said 24” iMacs were coming soon. So this rumor seems accurate.

Well, I have a 27" iMac, but it's a 2020 model. And I'm going to keep in until its too slow to do what I want, I have no plans to update from it. I also have a Mac Mini Pro with a 24" monitor, but I use my iMac almost exclusively. The mini is a media server pretty much.

A 24" would be big enough for me, but it'll have to have a better screen than the current one and support more RAM/faster processor. I have no desire to get the rumored 32" iMac -- that's too big. Give me a 24" M2/3 Max with at least 64G of RAM, and I probably would update from my 27" :)

Kuo: No new Macs until 2024

Gurman: New Macs this month

Talk about an exciting showdown. :p

I believe both of them have shared the opposite too, so they will be right or wrong depending on which prognostication you recall. Predict new Mac coming and no new Mac coming and you will be right. Predict all variations of new Mac coming and you will be right about that too.

But, that shared, they get paid to do what the rest of us do for free. So they clearly deserve some added attention and respect.
