Am waiting on this new iMac to release just so it will drive down the cost of the M1 iMac a bit more so I can get one for cheap to replace my 2017 4K. I don't really use it for much but I'd like to keep things somewhat current and my iMac is not compatible with Sonoma so it's still running Big Sur which is fine for now but it is getting a bit outdated.

People here really need reading comprehension classes.

Kuo said no M3 Macs this year... Gurman is also saying no M3 devices.
But new M2 Macs - yes.
Quoting https://medium.com/@mingchikuo/4q23...3-macbook-supply-chain-shipments-9cdc1c26b65a:

“There are no new products in 4Q23, and MacBook shipment momentum will be significantly lower than in past peak seasons. The key to no new products is that Apple needs to clear inventory and reformulate new product and marketing strategies for 2024.”

One note is that this is about MacBooks, not iMacs.

There has been more conflicting reports about iPads and Mac’s releasing than I remember seeing in a while

Probably branded PRO and priced like the old iMac Pro, which is much higher than most are expecting (because they are recalling the old "stating at..." pricing of iMac 27").

My own best guess is "stating at..." at least 2X the old iMac 27" level and that with specs too low to be comfortable by anyone who gets minimum RAM and SSD shortcomings. Nicely specced (upgrades to starter RAM and SSD) gets it right up and into former iMac Pro price levels.

We'll see of course... but I see no way to have ASD with stand option MSRP'ing towards $2K and rolling out a bigger ASD screen with a whole Mac inside, accompanied by a free* keyboard and mouse for a "starting at..." price of about $2K. So is ASD going to get a huge discount to MSRP or is it the floor price and an iMac "bigger" will need to add-on the cost of the Mac guts + keyboard + mouse + bigger screen premium (if bigger than 27")? We know Apple well. So place your bets.
Apple alaways spec for spec place the larger macbook pro around $200-300 higher than the larger imac
So expect for example an larger imac with m3 Max to be cheaper compared to the 16" Mbp with m3 max, so not more than $3299 starting price

My guess is it WILL be M2. Roll out anything M3 now and then months from now the wonder product launching with "old technology" makes little sense.
As a reminder Apple launched the M2-powered 15" MacBook Air this year at WWDC, a full year after apple announced the M2-powered 13" Air. And Apple launched the first M1 Macs in November 2020 and the M1 iMac and iPad a few months later in March 2021.

There would absolutely be precedent to launch an M3 iMac this fall and refresh the laptops in the spring (the Mini likely won't get a refresh until the M3 Pro is ready to launch later in 2024).

Is Gurman any more accurate than someone with a blindfold randomly predicting from the available rumor mill options?

I'll hope right with you but don't think that unwritten policy(?) will apply to this launch. That best I can tabulate for a 27" iMac resurrection with PRO & MAX but underwhelming RAM & SSD is "starting at $3499" but my gut guess pushes that up towards $3999 quite easily. It's much harder for me to logically work it DOWN to $3299 or even the psychological level of $2999 without giving up the minimum PRO chip I expect in that one.

If that is a hard pricing policy INSIDE of Apple, I would assume higher priced MBs are on the way, so that policy can work and iMac "bigger" can launch "starting at..." $3499-$3999.

Furthermore, my guts guess that iMac "bigger" will- in fact- be bigger than 27", working with iMac "smaller" being 24" vs. the former 21". I would not be surprised if "bigger" is 30"-32" or so instead of only 27"

But we'll see. Maybe the rest of the iMac parts suffer massive deflation so that Apple can scalp off the big profit in full while pricing it surprisingly low. Of course, like passing through the "no longer paying the Intel premium..." savings to us consumers, I would not hold much breath on such a surprise.

When is a 24 inch display small? Not everyone is interesting in posting photos of ultra widescreen desktop set ups. Most people just work.

Since about 2019/2020. Even bank tellers are using 27-inch models. These days, everyone can get a two pack of 27-inch monitors from Costco for under $300.

The iMac yes, but a 14/16 MBP update so soon smells like iPad 3-4 all over again.

My uneducated guess is M2 iMac spec bump and that's it.
If we get any updates on anything else beyond this, I will be very surprised. I also don’t even know if we will get this. They may just ride to M3 in the spring

Some of us don't want a seperate display, and especially one that costs as much as an iMac itself.

Honestly that is why I bought an iMac 24". I have a MacBook Air, and I thought about purchasing the ASD for working from home and for docking my MacBook. But the ASD costs $1,599. My iMac configuration cost $1,779 and including a matching Touch ID keyboard and trackpad. I use it to remote login to my work Windows machine, browsing, etc. 24" screen is plenty for my work, and the machine works well.

The point is - the exiting 24" iMac is great. Those waiting for a larger iMac are going to end up paying $4,000 for a 6K, 32" screen with a huge footprint. If you insist on a 27" screen - an ASD with a Mac mini will cost much less than whatever 32" iMac ends up being released.

Then do that, pair the screens with a Mac mini, and you are all set!

The poor donkey is looking at the carrot dangling from a stick attached to its head and constantly striving to get it. No matter hard or fast he goes, the target is still just in front of his nose.

A M2 or M3 processor is the carrot of many on this forum while their current product is still working. I have learned in the years since the 70s when I started in computers that I do not want to be on the cutting or bleeding edge of technology any more. Waiting a few months to let the early adopters discover the issues and their getting resolved actually is quite cost effective. I do not waste time trouble shooting the birthing issues. Or discovering I need to wait for the next generation or change path to a different system than I had originally planned to acquire.

Here is the pricing grid going forward:

iMac 24" - $1,599 (ignoring the lowest end model)
Mac mini + ASD 27" - keyboard + trackpad - $2,633
iMac Pro 32" (2025) - likely starting at $3,499 or $3,999

Mac mini + ASD is going to look like a value compared to the larger iMac, so those "waiting" are probably going to be dissapointed

Yes, but now that Apple has proven that most of us will pay the full price of an iMac for the display alone, expect the new pricing to leave old iMac pricing in the dust.

You can't have ASD pricing $1500-$2K and iMac 27" resurrection pricing at $1500-$2K. ASD would have to plunge in price to make THAT pricing work for iMac 27" OR new iMac will build atop well-established ASD pricing. It's not hard to guess which way Apple Inc. will go.

who da heck uses 24 inch monitor these days.....
Me! The M1 iMac has an amazing screen. Way better than any other display I've ever used. Even better than the M1 MBPs and my Pro Display XDR. The uniform backlight is much smoother than mini LED backlight arrays that have edge blooming and strange nonuniformities. I wish I could buy a matching 24" Apple monitor using the same 4.5k panel.

An M2 Pro 24" iMac could be interesting, and would really be the only justification for an m2 based iMac refresh at this time IMO... It would provide an interesting upgrade option fro those on the M1 who want some more power / future proofing.
