I have a 2019 27-inch iMac that still seems to work pretty well. I’d prefer the option of sticking with that size screen but 24 inches might not be a deal-breaker. However - at least for me - the next iMac needs to offer an M3 Pro chip in addition to the base M3 - just like the Minis have offered to base and Pro chips. I’ll happily leave the Max and Ultra chips to the Mac Stdio and a potential iMac Pro. No Pro chip, them perhaps a Mini or out of the ecosystem. I wouldn’t even give an M2 iMac serious consideration.
A 2019 Intel iMac works well for you but M2 doesn’t… yet an M3 will?

Interesting :)

M2 & M2 Pro
Maybe.

I’m running an M1 Mac mini 16 GB 1 TB with Huawei 28.2” 4K 3:2 monitor (in my sig).
If I didn't have my M1 Mac mini with 28" monitor, I'd continue to use my 2017 27" iMac.... until I got an M2 or M2 Pro Mac mini. I have zero interest in a 24" iMac.

For my laptop though, I already have an m3 MacBook. In fact, I'm typing on it right now.

Gurman, "Apple halted the iMac Pro plan a while ago due to cost concerns... positioning the Mac Studio and Studio Display combination as a high-end iMac replacement."

Well it didn't work for me as replacement for my multiple 27-in iMacs. I want 32-inch iMac all-in-one systems and in the meantime I am not buying. What is soooo difficult? The 27-in model was introduced 13 years ago, we now need more screen real estate.

Th M1 MacBook is still a solid device and still has years of life left as a budget offering… I agree with SE!

The M1 MacBook Air is a solid device for the lower end and education market. I’m glad Apple keep devices like these around as it provides an opportunity at a lower price point. It both gives people opportunity to buy apple… and apple the opportunity to expand user base.

Devices like M1 devices are a better buy than most other companies products.. great build and longer life/support
I wouldn’t even say just “lower end and education” - they handle photo editing and music recording very well at a higher-than-low end level. Semi-professional.

At some point, the 16 GB max memory will start to become a problem, though.

Very doubtful there will be a M3 this year…
So iMac with M2 and maybe M2Pro…
The Pro models? They’ll need M3Pro/Max and I cannot believe that would happen

Apple is planning a Mac-focused product launch, likely including the announcement of a refreshed 24-inch iMac, for the end of this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

imac-purple.jpg

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman said that Apple is "planning a Mac-centered product launch around the end of this month" that could see the the release of a refreshed 24-inch iMac model, which is long overdue a hardware update. The current model launched in April 2021 and it is the only current-generation Mac left with the M1 chip. Gurman has repeatedly said that Apple's next iMac will skip the M2 and feature the M3 chip instead, but he declined to mention which chip the new machine will feature in this newsletter.

Gurman noted that Apple retail stores are now in short supply of the iMac, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro, and many configurations now will not arrive until mid-November, in what he believes is "a clear sign that something is about to happen" regarding these three machines. He added that Apple has "made headway" on new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros. While the current, M2 Pro and M2 Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models launched in January, he thinks that an "additional update the same year would be unusual, but not inconceivable."

Gurman believes that the upcoming Mac announcement will take place on Monday, October 30 or Tuesday, October 31, followed by Apple's earnings call on Thursday, November 2. He does not expect any of the new Macs to feature major changes other than new processors, but mused that there could be minor improvements to their displays.

Gurman also reiterated rumors that next-generation MacBook Air models with M3 chips will not launch until early 2024 and that a larger "pro" version of the iMac with a 32-inch display and a new design is tabled for late 2024 or 2025. Mac redesigns are apparently likely to occur when Apple begins adding touchscreens to the lineup further in the future.

FILE UNDER: “Probably not gonna happen,” but…

If Apple announces and releases a new M3 MacBook Pro 16-inch this fall, 2023 (even just a spec bump, no design changes), I’ll be buying the maxxed-out model with the M3 with the fastest and most CPU and GPU cores, the largest amount of RAM Apple offers as well as the largest SSD storage available.

That’s what I did with the M2 MacBook Pro (M2 Max).

I’ve got two fingers crossed 🤞 that it’ll be a beast — and maybe even use LPDDR5X RAM with a data rate of 8533 Mbps or 33% faster than the current 6400 Mbps LPDDR5 RAM Apple is using now.

You can never feed that M3 too fast Apple!

A 33” iMac (Pro)? Surely they are working on the next Pro XDR, but where would that MacPro fit? It would be very expensive and compete with the Studio and the Pro, I don’t think Apple will go that route, unless, they plan to clutter the Mac offerings as they do the iPads…

You’re probably right — the only chance might be to combat aberrant falling Mac sales (post-CoViD and work-at-home) that’s been all over the news. Apple could choose to sweeten the attractiveness of its Mac line at the same price points in an effort to pump up sales.

I wouldn’t expect a lot of M2 converts, but maybe M1 Mac owners will go for new M3 Macs this year.

I really don’t wanna wait til January or this summer…

But supposedly iPad sales are even further down and yet they don’t seem to offer anything new there…
And my M1MBA and my M1Max Studuo are running just fine, so I would not be in the camp of upgrades… and for anyone still on an Intel Mac, M2 is a huge upgrade…
But, let’s just see what is really going to happen before the end of the month

It's gonna be a press release for 24" M2/M2 Pro iMacs. No way they would announce M3 Macs via press release let alone along with M2 iMacs.
I thought the same, but then I thought, why couldn’t they do a little 20 minute keynote-style introduction video for the iMac & M3? If the new Apple refuses to do anymore live keynotes, they could use that to their advantage for these mini-announcements.

My opinion might be skewed, but maybe as a tribute to its 25th anniversary, and the product that saved Apple from bankruptcy, that it’s the first product to get the M3. At least that’s what I’m hoping…

My 24" M1 iMac is already so ridiculously fast, I am not sure it is worth it for me to upgrade. This thing flies.
If I was confident an M1 iMac with 16GB and 512GB to 1TB SSD I would have bought one already. But I want 32GB RAM for my 3D modelling. With Apple’s silicon chips 24GB RAM might be sufficient.

Good opportunity to EOL the 13" MBP and M1 MBA—which should not exist. Frankly, there are plenty of Apple devices which should not exist... but that makes two of 'em.

I couldn’t agree more.

Apple really needs to “cull” the Mac line.

(The iPhone line could use a good culling, too… At least ditch the stupid iPhone 13. You gotta take risks! — like Steve Jobs used to. He only had one iPhone line going at a time! Tim Cook plays it too safe. I think he’s a nail-biter. Most buyers aren’t gonna switch to Android because Apple dumped the iPhone 13, ffs! They’ll pony up the extra hundred bucks to get a better iPhone — especially if they don’t KNOW there’s the option of an iPhone 13. And they’ll have a better User Experience with the newer, better phone, and it will reflect better on Apple and the Apple Brand, and a better experience will positively impact Brand Loyalty.)

More often than not, when you simplify a product line, sales go up, not down.

(See books, “The Tyranny of Choice” and “The Paradox of Choice.”)

Kuo: No new Macs until 2024

Gurman: New Macs this month

Talk about an exciting showdown. :p
Gurman seems like a covert Apple spokesman for Bloomberg who gets fed info directly from Apple PR people, kind of like Joanna Stern from WSJ does. That's how he always seems to know when exactly something is releasing, and he usually announces it 6-7 days before it actually does, but any timeframe longer than that he is utterly clueless.

Kuo is a supply chain analyst, he just sees what's being physically spit out the manufacturing pipeline in Taiwan and China and makes his predictions from that.

Given that both said no M3 Macs this year, I think everyone saying it's just an M2 iMac and updated USB-C keyboards and mice are right. Why would they launch M3 on such a low-selling product line? If anything it would be the 13 inch Macbook Air. Plus, all 3nm chips are being put in Iphones as a priority.
