I'm wondering what all the people with a 27'' Intel iMac are going to do now that the 2017 model can't be updated to Sonoma. I doubt that most of them would be happy with a 24'' iMac. I guess macMini or Studio and a larger display as it does not look as if there is going to be a new 27'' iMac in the lineup.
I got tired of waiting last year, and went w/ the Studio to replace my 2012 iMac 27"

Yes, Apple, please! Following the introduction of a new iMac, all Apple input devices will shift to USB-C. Waiting months for this to happen.
Ironically I was considering picking up another keyboard before they switch so as I phase out lightning on my mobile gear I have uses for my lightning cables at home :p

That back and forth of rumors is how Apple catches leakers.

Give certain people specific info such as "no new Macs for 2023" and narrow down who is snitching. Smart.
Seems unlikely. Most of the ‘leakers’ are simply industry analysts who are known entities to Apple, plus the usual ‘influencers.’

Inside Apple, the various HW and SW teams aren’t ‘small’ and regardless of final release dates, they are aware of relative readiness to release, and need to generally work across teams, so the number of ‘discrete single to few people’ info redirections that can really occur - just isn’t that realistic, IMO.

I suppose final release plans could be fudged a bit, but for example if the intended ‘secret‘ release date for something is Q4, the team(s) still have internal milestones leading to ‘ready for production or release’ or similar, and they’d notice the difference in dates being put out for internal milestones on the projects, especially if it’s being claimed internally ‘release in Q2’ etc.

It’s possible in some cases more discrete component teams may not have broader visibility, e.g. ‘next gen NOT butterfly keyboard,’ but it gets more difficult in various product finalization/prep for internal builds, etc.

Similar to how they caught leakers in the early 00's, before the iPhone. Anybody remember the Asteroid?

Some of us don't want a seperate display, and especially one that costs as much as an iMac itself.
Absolutely for the low end because what a great value the base 27" iMac was. However IMO a high end 27" iMac makes much less sense. I think the people holding out because they would prefer an All-in-one (which may be more as the iMac Pro did start at $3999 vs an ASD and Mac Studio being $3699 or so with KB/Mouse) is small compared to the people holding out because Apple currently doesn't offer a good value proposition for those who want a big screen ($1799 for base 27" iMac vs $2299 for ASD and base Mac mini or so with KB/Mouse).

Again, I think a lot of the holdouts would be satisfied if there was a significant drop in the price of the ASD - to say $1199 or less.

I don't doubt a bigger iMac will be really expensive, and that's why I really wouldn't consider it. But I don't like moving my head much when working, so 32" is also just too big. 27" is right on the edge of what I'll use and a 24" sounds like a pretty good idea. (the 24" iMac really isn't spec'd for someone like me in everything other than size.)
It’s kind of funny. Majority of companies doing ‘all in ones’ goes back to late 90s/2K and are mainly Point of Sale type systems. The iMac made sense, to me, from the standpoint of ‘higher quality screen than can easily/reasonably affordable get elsewhere’ for creatives and types requiring higher res screens, but to me, this has been played out, and I personally am surprised by the product line longevity of the iMacs, which to me, remain significantly over-priced as more capable displays have started to be available and prices (displays) will start to drop further on 4-6k displays.

There’s some appeal in ‘all in one’ to some, but besides the fact I personally run an UW (although am looking ofr a HiDPI variant and may still be adding a 5K display (Apple or Samsung) to the mix vertically, I would go Mini + choose my own display(s) in a heartbeat, as in many cases, depending on the specific job(s) at hand, the displays can outlast the computer. With iMacs, there’s just no choice, even if their screens are generally quite decent. and at the price point - wow. Apple, at least on the iMacs, you have certainly, IMO, managed to make people ‘Think Different’ although in a way not great to their savings. :D

Yip - that’s me. Currently treading water…

24 inch too small, 32 too big.

I’m running an M1 Mac mini 16 GB 1 TB with Huawei 28.2” 4K 3:2 monitor (in my sig).

I offered my 2017 27” iMac 24 GB 1 TB to my kid but she doesn’t want it. She’d rather use the 2015 13” MacBook Pro 8 GB 256 GB I got her a couple of years ago for cheap off eBay. She’s fine running Monterey. And my other kid is so far fine with our old 2010 27” iMac 12 GB upgraded to 250 GB SSD, with High Sierra.

So, that 27” 2017 iMac is just sitting unused for now.

Sometimes the rumors are like spoilers. This time we have two completely contradictory rumors coming from two of the largest leakers, and I have no idea what to think. If it's just an M2 spec bump for the iMac, why wasn't that done sooner? Perhaps sales of the M1 iMac were lackluster and they needed to clear enough inventory before releasing an updated version, even if it has been ready for a long time. If it's M3, it seems awfully soon to be introducing it after the Vision Pro was announced to have M2, not to mention the Air update and the MBP updates earlier this year. And also, would M3 really be relegated to a press release? Maybe so if the performance gains are underwhelming...

As a reminder Apple launched the M2-powered 15" MacBook Air this year at WWDC, a full year after apple announced the M2-powered 13" Air. And Apple launched the first M1 Macs in November 2020 and the M1 iMac and iPad a few months later in March 2021.

There would absolutely be precedent to launch an M3 iMac this fall and refresh the laptops in the spring (the Mini likely won't get a refresh until the M3 Pro is ready to launch later in 2024).
Presumably OP is referring to the $3,500+ Vision Pro shipping with “only” an M2 SoC after M3 has been announced. If that’s the case, either Vision Pro gets M3 as well or some prospective customers will rightfully be asking why they should drop that much money on a previous-generation chip, on an already hard sell.

I’d love it if someone did a blind test and asked a Mac user to test out the latest iMac without allowing any benchmarking.

“The new iMac is amazing, I think it’s a worthwhile upgrade over M1”

“The snappiness in Sonoma is something worth upgrading for”

Then telling them what they had been testing was actually an iMac with M1.

I’m betting on M2 iMac in time for Xmas, no form factor update, and just a press release.

No M3 anything until 2024.
Id wait for M4, M2 is ancient and M3 has been on the rumor mill for a year now and will be meh.

Wait for M4 or possibly M5.

You will be blown away by M6

And utterly blown away by M7

You wouldn’t believe what you can do with M8

And M9? Well wait for the big M10

M10… you will be phasing in and out of this multiverse, forget about augmented reality!

I'm on a Late 2013, stuck on Catalina. So whatever they release, whatever size I don't care. If not, Mac Mini will replace my old iMac.

Baseless speculation, iMac is about to get the Mac mini update to M2, complete with M2 Pro top end.

As for the other models… maybe we are (finally) about to see SSD and/or RAM upgrade price cuts?

Good opportunity to EOL the 13" MBP and M1 MBA—which should not exist. Frankly, there are plenty of Apple devices which should not exist... but that makes two of 'em.
Rebrand the M1 MBA to MB SE and drop starting price to $799 USD. That would still make it a great value.

Gurman says there's very low stock for high-end MBP models.

I could imagine it's some kind of small refresh instead of the M3 Pro/Max, but what? They're not gonna debut a new case design in a press release.

No. It would be monumentally stupid to only put in an M2 after all this time. And if an M2 then why not release it earlier?
No more stupid than releasing an M2 15" MBA in the summer. Maybe the 24" iMac will have both, M2 and M2 Pro, options.

It's gonna be a press release for 24" M2/M2 Pro iMacs. No way they would announce M3 Macs via press release let alone along with M2 iMacs.

Th M1 MacBook is still a solid device and still has years of life left as a budget offering… I agree with SE!

The M1 MacBook Air is a solid device for the lower end and education market. I’m glad Apple keep devices like these around as it provides an opportunity at a lower price point. It both gives people opportunity to buy apple… and apple the opportunity to expand user base.

Devices like M1 devices are a better buy than most other companies products.. great build and longer life/support

I have a 2019 27-inch iMac that still seems to work well. I’d prefer the option of sticking with that size screen but 24 inches might not be a deal-breaker. However - at least for me - the next iMac needs to offer an M3 Pro chip in addition to the base M3 - just like the Minis have offered the base and Pro chips. I’ll happily leave the Max and Ultra chips to the Mac Studio and a potential iMac Pro. No Pro chip, then perhaps a Mini, out of the ecosystem… or wait until my current iMac gets no new updates before doing anything. I wouldn’t even give an M2 iMac serious consideration.
