I don’t know where this ‘rugged’ requirement is coming from. Extreme sports, endurance, Ironman dont happen in extreme environments. They just need a bigger battery! Apple may just be missing the point with this one.
Well, a bigger screen usually comes with a bigger battery.

And sadly there will be people who buy it because there is an Apple logo on it… not that it is superior quality or workmanship. If you want one of these watches now, just get the cheapest series 7 and dress it up in one of the many rugged cases/straps that are available to you… which by the way covers almost all of the watches exterior… no one seems to be interested in value for $ anymore - or maybe its just not being taught in our education system… basic economics…
People are thinking differently nowadays - there's unprecedented wealth and debt being used to fuel purchases.

So cute!, Apple trying to compete with the serious activity “watches”!!!.
Current Apple Watch is a joke for training and you want to compete?. I guess Apple has been secretly developing a golf app, a much more decent running app, a more decent cycling app, a good app for hiking, etc. as Garming has.
Apple Watch (with the stock apps) until now is gadget, not a sports watch, it can help to be more active but it does not replace one after all these years. I love mine and I am a 2 watches at the same time guy (Apple watch in my right and my real mechanical watch on the left), I don’t see myself wearing a 1000usd slab of “rugged” watch that does the same as the regular Apple Watch.
But surely some people will love it for rugged look.

Not counter effective at all. They advertised months ahead of newer durable Watch, so you buy the 7 now, then buy again when the hiker edition comes out at $999 with even MORE durability.

Now Apple got you twice with a purchase.
But I don’t think that the average user will buy a watch now and then an almost double the price watch after a few months because it is more durable. They will be already convinced their watch is durable enough, especially for the money they paid for it.

Charging something nightly isn’t exactly difficult in any way.

My AW has changed my life. Notifications, paying for things at the store, and controlling my music and podcasts on the go.
It's life changing that you can do that stuff from your wrist and not spend a few seconds pulling out your phone?

I stopped wearing a watch as cell phones got smarter and watches became redundant, but if a watch replaced my phone I would totally switch back.

I agree - there's unprecedented wealth and debt being used to fuel these purchases.
Not sustainable, and those who have wealth aren’t acquiring the debt… they are the ones collecting the interest on it.

Chuckle 😂😂😂
If that is the price range an AW is not even close to being on that buy list!

A watch I use for hiking and other such activities is not the watch I wear everyday. So I cannot see buying this as an occasional accessory.

Is there any limit to Apple's greed?
I don’t think it’s greed. They’re in the business of growing their business (like any of us would, even as mom and pop proprietors). Looking at the prices of these kinds of watches, they’re gambling on what they believe the market can bear for a certain type of smart watch. This is a niche they haven’t yet adequately addressed. Unlike Jony Ive’s ultimately pointless Edition vision, they’re supposedly building form to advance function for a certain kind of buyer.

In the years I’ve been on here, I’ve read many comments from many men complaining the existing watches weren’t big enough, tough enough, didn’t have the look and battery life they wanted and they would be willing to pay big for what they wanted. Now it looks like Apple might have a product for them.

Time will tell if this market is lucrative enough to sustain this product or if it goes the way of the iPhone mini sized phones, for which there was also vocal support but not enough purchasers to make them worth Apple’s time.

Yes people spend $1000+ on a watch for sports. Not everyone is a hobby jogger or beginner. Some people need long battery life and rugged cases

Fair enough, but never underestimate the number of people who are not wise with their money, have more than they know what to do with, are addicted to shopping, and will have no problem spending money twice.

If the 2+ years of lockdowns has taught me anything, it's that a smartwatch is unnecessary unless you really need it for a specific purpose.

Apple is not going to make an extremely durable and feature watch that could last a long time without charging for it. Apple likes its upgrade or ‘gotta have the latest version‘ revenue.

Given inflation and the current exchange rate between the Euro and the US dollar I highly doubt many Europeans will be willing to shove out extra money for a “more high end model” that is, at the same time costlier to them due to the USD/EUR parity.

Apple needs to stop pegging their prices to the USD and be more sensitive towards individual markets and Purchasing Power Parity (PPP).

You can’t just increase or decrease pricing based on exchange rates. They don’t do it with the USD, although after all, it’s pretty much made in China.

1. No way in heck would I pay $999 for a freaking watch, especially when that price is the same as a G-D phone.
2. I can buy a $10 case on Amazon to get the same rugged effect.
3. How'd these high prices turn out for Apple Watch Edition? Answer: it flopped.

It would take major battery improvements for me to consider this over my Fenix. More than doubling current battery life would be the first thing. I have had an Apple Watch and it has no features that make it better for me, battery could make it an equal.

Do you really think 1K and 5K are even on the same order of magnitude for this? Some SS Apple Watches with a good strap cost more than 1K, so I’d say 1K is totally reasonable (low for what I would have said), and would sell well. I recall what people thought the original AW was going to cost…

I been an owner of the iphone since the original 2g version and to this date I have never own nor wanted an apple watch. Never understood the whole idea of it. I much prefer a simple Swiss watch than something I need to worry about charging.
Oh, they’re pretty nice. Sleep tracking has been a great feature, for example. Heart rate is informative. I have answered the phone with it, despite misplacing my phone, which is very handy. But the battery life suffers by comparison to many other notable brands: Garmin, Citizens. My Garmin Enduro needs charging…wait for it…every 50 days.
