As a recent convert from a series 5 AW to a Garmin Epix 2, if Apple pitches the AW Pro as having multiple days battery life, when using low power mode, I’ll be in line to NOT go back to an AW. I get 2+ weeks of battery life on my Garmin and that includes daily workout, every other day running with gps tracking and sleep tracking every night. I’m also uninterested in another rectangular Watch and much prefer the traditional round form factor.
You not NOT included in Apples target market. That's why there are different companies, brands and products. Enjoy what works for you. Having an Apple Watch with all of its features couldn't have a 2week battery life. How many oled devices do?

As I have said here numerous times, flat sides (and square corners) will never happen on the Apple Watch for OBVIOUS reasons to anyone who has ever owned a watch of any kind.

Damn thing wouldn’t go two hours without a ding. The idiotic rumors about it are just plain weird.
Ummm, you do realize, like half the high end watch brands all have flat sides?

But I am Apple’s target customer and have been going back to the 1980’s and I owned and loved the Apple Watch series 5 I used to own. The only thing Garmin’s Epix doesn’t do is have cellular connectivity, and obviously not all Apple Watches do either and they still only last one day. If Garmin can figure out how to get 16 days of battery life (with AOD disabled), while still providing great health and fitness tracking, Apple should be able to do better.

While I don’t personally need it, my best friend does half-Ironmans. A few years ago he did it with his Series 3. The 3 made it through the swimming part, but the battery died during the bike stage. He ended up buying a 7, but I’d be curious what Apple’s target market would be for a “Pro” version.

There should be an Apple Belt.

Imagine Smart Belts.

They know your weight, height and waist size.

They know when you are bloated.

They know when you need to go toilet.

They tell you ‘Dude you need to lighten up’

btw they also know when you are anorexic and report you to your parents.

Much ado about nothing. I have a series 7 (alu). The screen coating picks up scratches very easily which is disappointing - basically pony up more $ to the steel crystal screen or suffer. But that’s a huge jump in cost.
I tend to replace it every year because of (trade in) & the scratches plus this year the stretchy woven band has turned out to a dud in terms of it now looking like a ill fitting dishcloth now. The series 8 seems to (rumour wise) offer pretty much nothing of interest to me.
Might even still trade in my beat up S7 but actually get an old S6 or another S7 just to freshen it up a bit. (Plus wife would never even realise if I chose the same colour lol so won’t comment on the spend!)

They better do away with the Edition models if they adopt a Pro model. If I have to pay $1200 for the Pro Edition model I’m going to be annoyed. I already have a titanium chassis on this Edition I have. Please don’t make this any more convoluted than it needs to be.

there have been rumors from Gurman earlier that the "Pro" or whatever they call it is indeed replacing the "Edition" models since those were Titanium anyway. The stainless steel will of course stay but those haven't been called Edition models for sometime now.

There are some rumors of software only features on the new "Pro", the biggest of which is some kind of hiking feature... I suspect it will be built in terrain maps similar to what Garmin offers on their Fenix 7 / Epix 2 watches (their highest end, they incorporate ALL the features of running, biking, swimming and other lower end watches and cost $1000 featuring titanium, sapphire, and lengthy battery life). I think the idea behind the watch from Apple is bigger screen (47mm is standard in the "sports watch" world), rugged (but not necessarily rugged looking, this is Apple after all), more sport/hiking specific features (hiking terrain maps, rumored yet to be announced offered coaching plans etc.), much improved battery life offering up to 24 hour GPS recording and 3-4 day battery regular battery life (if you aren't using GPS much.) Most folks will think the extras aren't worth it or useful to them, and the price will be a put off... but the folks who own iPhones but have been buying $1000 Garmins (MANY MANY FOLKS) will suddenly have an alternative in the Apple ecosystem.

The only thing Garmin’s Epix doesn’t do is have cellular connectivity
No LTE. No Siri. No text messaging. No email replies. Poor music implementation. Inferior audio quality. Limited app integration (e.g., airline QR codes). Limited availability of Garmin Pay vs Apple Pay. No unlocking Macs. No unlocking phones when wearing masks.

Don't get me wrong, the Epix is a great sports watch (and better looking that an AW IMHO). And I rely on Garmin to train for and run multiple marathons each year. But the AW smartwatch capabilities are extensive, which is why so many runners I know continue to wear both.

I use both, I’m not a runner but it’s handy to have them both around, they all have their good points but 24/7 HRM is fantastic

I understand that “pro” simply means the more expensive or higher-end model in Apple terms, but I thought that’s what the “edition” was?

I hope they find a better term. A “Pro” Apple Watch/user outside of a rugged outdoor watch doesn’t seem sensible to me.

Edition was their word for higher end "fashion" materials in the past. According to an earlier Gurman report Apple is moving away from a high end fashion focus on the watches (they will obviously keep Aluminum and Stainless Steel options) and will get rid of all the "Edition" models to focus now on a high end sport model instead. So the Edition will go away and the only titanium models will be part of the bigger, rugged, sports focused models.

I’m glad Apple and others build obsolescence into their product line. Technology is moving fast. Incremental feature sets matter. Embittered Apple consumers should heed this “ great thinker’s sage adviceA Man’s got to know his limitations” Clint Eastwood Magnum Force 1973 See It!

I'm not saying they will but with extra potential battery in the high end focused models it would be trivial for Apple to finally offer 24/7 1 second HRM like Garmin, Fitbit and others have offered for the last 5+ years. They could market it as one of the "extra" sports focused features you get with the new watch. DC Rainmaker a popular Youtube/web reviewer of sports tech (in particular watches) said in testing WatchOS 9 there are hidden hints to features not yet announced that imply either coaching or readiness/recovery analysis such as higher end Garmin's offer... perhaps that will be associated with the high end sports Apple Watch this fall, or maybe it is something coming to the whole new lineup but they are saving it for the reveal.

The resentful complainers here should leave the Apple Ecosystem. They bemoan Apple’s pricing ad nauseam. In the past 10 days I’ve read on various Apple forums that Apple is Greedy, elitist and Racist. (Along with some wild-eyed and amusing Marxist rhetoric). As “food insecurity” increases and home affordability rises above the reach of many, so too the price of high End electronics is a reality check. Some lash out on these consumer forums because they can’t keep up. I’m glad Apple and others build obsolescence into their product line. Technology is moving fast. Incremental feature sets matter. Embittered Apple consumers should heed this “great thinker’s” sage advice. “A Man’s got to know his limitations” Clint Eastwood “Magnum Force” 1973

Apple is just targeting an existing market that sports and outdoor enthusiasts already know existed the last decade, so called "super watches" from the likes of Garmin, Polar, and Coros that already cost $1000 and offer sports kitchen sink features combined with rugged sapphire and titanium builds with oversized 47mm+ screens. For people that don't want or need to spend $1000 on a crazy overkill sports watch there will be brand new Series 8 Apple Watches with new features like skin temp tracking and more offered FOR THE EXACT SAME PRICE as the last several years.

Oh it’s very much meant to be a status symbol. Let those with the cash who either love the design or who want the status symbol go for it. It’s a free country.

That was the case with the iPhone X. I both had the cash and loved the design including both the larger screen and even the notch because I really dug Face ID, still do and I still to this day don’t get the backlash against the notch. The technology wasn’t there yet for Face ID without a notch or something like it to hide the cameras. It’ll be notch free soon enough.

If the non-pro S8 simply adds a body temperature sensor and say 10% more battery, I’m not sure that’s enough to convince very many S4-S7 owners to upgrade.

remember the core Apple Watch relies on small incremental changes to users of several year old Apple Watches to get them to upgrade. while they would love you to upgrade every year they know few will do that (and the ones that do, well... they pretty much do it no matter what the new features are ✋). so realistically the typical Series 8 buyer who already has an Apple Watch isn't just getting a SKIN temperature sensor (not internal body temp) and 10% more battery, they are also getting a bigger screen, slight redesigned look etc. and all the features of the past few years too right? That for many adds up to a worth while upgrade. It is VERY seldom Apple makes such a large leap in a single year that many users are tempted to upgrade immediately, but when you look at the small updates added up over 2-4 years the new watch many look worthy to many, many users. The "Pro" watch is going after users who want the absolutely most amount of features and premium materials no matter the cost, plus a significant market of "expensive" sports (marathons, ultras, triathlons etc.) and outdoor enthusiasts who typically are affluent, use iPhones, but choose high end $1000+ Garmin sports watches for the battery life and sports specific features Apple has yet to offer.

a more durable formulation of titanium to make it extra rugged.
Wouldn’t steel be the most “rugged” choice? I thought titanium was like super-aluminium - really, really high strength to weight ratio, but still not as strong as steel for the same volume (but lighter)?

My 4th gen Apple Watch continues to work like a champ. Is it the same team working on Watch that worked on the MacBook Pro? That team is out of touch. The Air team got it right this year.

I think the new Watch should have flat sides as per the rumours. I'm not a huge fan of the rounded edges of the current Apple Watch design. A full-flat screen would be a nice change.

Don’t think I’ll buy another Apple Watch, they lose so much money I payed £800 for mine I’m lucky to be offered for £150 a year and a half later. Still not sold it yet!

I hardly ever used it and gone back to my old mechanical watch, it really isn’t that hard or an effort to pull your phone out your pocket.

I love my gadgets but can’t seem to love the Apple Watch I find it a bit pointless…
