100% this. Siri was initially introduced as nothing more than a gimmick, but then competitors began developing useful versions and for some reason Apple has never cared to follow suit. Siri remains almost as useless as introduced on the 4S…

Took the words out of my mouth. Siri and HomePod both started as gimmicks with a promise…a promise Apple broke. Many old Apple faithfuls are tired of the same old broken promise cycle.

In all seriousness, the main issue I have with Siri is playing music titles. Usually have to reword it a couple different ways to find the exact track I am looking for, especially if it’s one I don’t have.

But that really doesn’t surprise me with so many different versions, remixes and collaborations.

And as far as ‘take me home’ or ‘find me so and so near me’ I have no issues. Same with timers and alarms.

I’m sure Google is light years ahead. But I refuse to use it so ignorance is bliss being I have nothing to compare it to.

I do not really want Siri "awake" all the time. So easy then to have all of our communications monitored by some outside authority without our knowledge. Read George Orwells "1984" written in 1954 to see how this will play out. We are nearly there now. We power off the Home Pods so we can chat in the living room.
This isn’t an issue with most Apple devices because they do all processing on device in a privacy preserving way. Devices like the HomePod without a Neural Engine still send to the cloud, but that will certainly be fixed in a product refresh. Apple is pretty good about not logging either way. Just turn off improve Siri to make sure it doesn’t capture any 5 second clips.

Honestly, Siri needs more work then “Hey Siri”.
This. Exactly, precisely this.

Every time Apple announces an "improvement" to Siri that boils down to "more sports scores, faster!" because Eddy Cue loves sports, I want to throw something against the wall. I don't care about sports. I just want Siri to get better at understanding what I need and then executing on it.

To this day, my wife STILL can't use personal requests on our HomePods, across three different iOS versions.

Have you ever tried sending a text message or email in a dream? It is an intensely frustrating experience. Borderline impossible no matter how long you try. The words come out garbled and non-sensical every time.

Using Siri feels exactly the same.

Why bother making it easier for me to use something I never ever use anyway. The fact they think this is the issue is the real issue.

Siri is TERRIBLE. Like embarrassingly bad at EVERYTHING. And hasn’t improved at all in years while google assistant and Alexa get better.

Apple’s AI stuff has got so much better with things like photography but language is still awful. It’s not just Siri - the keyboard predictive text is also rubbish and comes up with the stupidest non-sensical predictions.

I’m actually surprised how well Siri picks up the vague titles I give them including those not in my library. Maybe it helps that I mostly listen to metal so they can weight the genre.

Awesome. Apple wants your phone to be listening to everything you say now. Yay privacy!
The trigger (Siri or hey siri) is processed on device so there is not privacy concern whatsoever and anyway there is no difference in that sense with a shorter trigger. The reason you should be concerned about privacy is the recent drift towards the ad business (on App Store, Apple TV etc).

Spending time dropping ‘Hey’ rather than making Siri usable is insane.
True. Siri is definitely a mixed bag. They surprise me with the accuracy some times. Other times– and this had been happening a lot lately, I’m like “Hey Siri pause my Music”. Siri- “There is no music playing on your HimePod.” There clearly is, so I need to get up to tap the top of the HomePod or open the home app to pause.

Apple is working on an updated Siri experience that moves away from the trigger phrase "Hey Siri" currently required to invoke the digital voice assistant hands-free, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple is working on a way for Siri to be able to understand phrases and commands without the need to use the "Hey Siri" trigger phrase but instead simply saying "Siri." Gurman says the change is expected to roll out sometime next year or in 2024.
Gurman also reports today that Apple is working to further integrate Siri into third-party services and apps to provide more context and assistance to users.

Talk about focusing on the wrong thing. Siri doesn't work. It is that simple. How long is Apple going to be in denial about the importance and reality of this and start over. Maybe Tim Cook is a genius at logistics and supply chains but really has no clue about "AI." I mean, in five minutes of using Google I can see it is so far beyond Siri in terms of accuracy and usefulness. They must know the Emperor (Siri) is not wearing any clothes (is flawed at its core). If Apple hasn't figured out how to "fix" it by now (bring it up to even marginal parity with its competitors), that tells me it is so flawed it is not fixable. I really hope Apple is working on something from the ground up in parallel with Siri, developing it behind the scenes, so they can scrap the current Siri and just replace it with something that works as well as Google or Alexa did 3 years ago, and play catch-up from there. They could even just continue to call it Siri if they want. Or they could call it something new and provide instant relief to the millions of Apple users whose first order of business in buying an Apple product is to make sure Siri is turned off (except on HomePod).

Just what I wanted to see on a Sunday morning: Siri bashing part 15,947,678. I can't wait, I bet everyone will have nothing but new insightful observations, facts and revelations and not the very same tired arguments from all sides being restated over and over, in all caps if necessary.

I still don't understand why I can't choose another own name for Siri. If you have a Sarah in the house, Siri becomes...really, really challenging. I imagine the same would be for Alexa. I would also love to differentiate by device or device type (call my HomePods something different than my iOS devices)

If I can teach a dog what his name is, why can't I do the same for devices that have more processing power than 1960's NASA mission command?
