What? No. Instead of 'hey Siri', it's using the wrist raise action as a prompt to listen. This is not the same problem at all.
That's the point. Everyone is acting like this is a magic Siri thing they're working on - it's not. It's just a trigger action. The Watch can already do it.

This isn't a job for the Siri engineers. This is a job for the iPhone/HomePod engineers on how to find an alternative trigger action like the Watch does.

Also, anyone saying "Why not fix Siri instead of this" doesn't understand software development.

I don't use Siri at all but accidentally launch it on the keyboard as it is a permanent key on my Touch Bar. It would be great to eliminate it. No call up phrase, doesn't this mean it will listen all the time at everything without being called up?

Why not just scrap Siri and start over. Apple ignored Siri for like 5 years after introduction. Everyone else has moved on to something that works. Changing "Hey Siri" is not going to fix it.
How would you know if you moved on? I have Alexa on my Mach-e and can use Siri at the same time through Car Play. I compare them all the time. They seem pretty comparable to me. Siri tells better jokes. Alexa, however, is activated just by saying Alexa, which I guess is a little nicer.

“A single smartphone today likely has more computing power than the aggregate of all computers in the world when we landed on the moon in 1969.”

This was going to be my response, but the article covered it.

Apple is working on an updated Siri experience that moves away from the trigger phrase "Hey Siri" currently required to invoke the digital voice assistant hands-free, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports.

In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman says that Apple is working on a way for Siri to be able to understand phrases and commands without the need to use the "Hey Siri" trigger phrase but instead simply saying "Siri." Gurman says the change is expected to roll out sometime next year or in 2024.
Gurman also reports today that Apple is working to further integrate Siri into third-party services and apps to provide more context and assistance to users.

Siri used to be good when it was powered by Nuance tech. It has been rubbish from the moment Apple gutted it and replaced it with its own tech. They’ve been shovelling **** up hill ever since.

Touch Bar on the Mac is customizable, just go to System Preferences, Keyboard, Customize Control Strip, then drag from the screen to the Touch Bar or from the Touch Bar to the screen what you want.

Does Apple not realize there are a lot of actual people in the world named Siri? I already get a lot of false activations, I can’t imagine how many more will happen if “hey” is dropped. Alexa’s activation name can be changed, Siri needs that too.

Any improvement to Siri is welcomed, as long as it doesn't break her!
I'm certain it's broken.
Last week, there were several different responses to the command:

"hey siri, turn on mini 3"
1.siri: "uh-huh"...10 secs later light bulb was activted.
2. Siri: "I'm sorry, mini 3 is not in your apple music"
3. Siri: "I'm on it!"
4. Siri: (10 seconds later) "I'm on it!"
5. Siri: "on it!"
6. Siri: unresponsive.
7. Siri: gives me a definition of whatever was misheard.
8: Siri: activates several incorrect devices.
9. Siri: "the mini 3 is not responding" but has completed the request.
10. I'm on the phone and Siri is rattling off non sense with out the wake words being uttered.
(Nudge-nudge.."not eavesdropping eh Apple?")

The home app is the buggiest I've seen in quite a while, so I don't think Siri will ever work correctly until there's a paradigm shift in the base code of homekit, and it is completely re-engineered.
Right now homekit is band aids over band aids.

I just want Siri to be more practical (and more accurate) and less ceremonial. When I am browsing in Safari I should be able to just say "add this page to my news bookmarks and remind me about it at 7pm.", then just a short soft beep or ding to acknowledge it. Sort of a use case of Siri being an assistant while you're on the screen.

They also need to do something about having multiple devices. Why when I say "Hey Siri, turn on my 6 a.m. alarm." from my bed does a different device respond every night? It could be my iPhone that's across the room on my dresser in my bedroom, my HomePod mini that's on my bedroom nightstand, the HomePod in the living room, etc.

Sometimes two or more of them set the alarm.

Very annoying.

I hate saying “hey siri” it feels awkward but Siri alone is likely to get set off too easy. It already responds to random audio from the tv when it thinks it hears it. Siri overall is just a mess. It worked better years ago. Now my scenes I used for years are hard to trigger, it can’t remember my voice and it’s just plain slow. I watched a friend use Alexa to pause her music last night and was amazed at how responsive it was compared to Siri on my HomePods at home lately

Why is this so difficult? Why is Siri so far behind? Why is there so much lag with every voice assistant? Siri is so many generations behind. Apple has the resources, can't they at least catch up with the competition? When it launched, it looked like a killer app that would improve every generation, and instead it's the same mediocre thing.

How about they work on a digital assistant that doesn’t suck ass.

Always wondered what households where there are people named Siri should do – Apple don’t want them as customers? :)

Is that like when I used PlainTalk on my Mac back in 1997 with a word I entered, such as "Computer" and it worked just fine?

Google, Amazon, Microsoft and Apple all have an obvious limitation in their voice recognition/processing software that can be easily fixed. I just don't know why they won't fix it. Amazon won't work in a house that has somebody named Alexa. Same thing with Apple. All they have to do is allow the users to customize their own trigger phrase. It's that simple. Of course, coach users so that they don't use a customer trigger phrase that can be easily triggered by accident.

Regardless, I don't like trigger phrase at all. I'm perfectly fine with holding the device button while speaking the command. I only use the trigger phrase when I'm driving.

Apples fixes bugger all. Just more dung on the pile.

I live in the UK. WTF are shades? we have curtains and/or blinds. It drives the misses potty when siri says "closing the shades"

We use curtains and blinds in the USA also.

The way I’ve come to understand it, Blinds are slats that can be opened or closed to let in/block out light and block/allow visibility.

Shades are the single piece of fabric that can be drawn/rolled sideways or down usually to obscure visibility but is usually translucent. It’s possible that most blinds are also shades being that they meet the specifications above.

Are you unable to rename the item in Home or maybe in the manufacturer’s app? I had to do this in Home after switching a smart outlet from a fan to a heater. We were saying “turn on the fan” to trigger the heater until I modified it in the settings.
