Needs to be a lot more then this to convince me to upgrade from my current 13Pro Max.

The problem is those margins are getting extremely slim anyway because duh, duh, duuuuuuuuuh… people are keeping their iPhones longer. Major reason not enough significant feature changes to warrant upgrading even every few years.
I’m not sure if margins are getting smaller or whether they simply cannot afford to buy a new phone outright every year. So they take it on finance or on a 2 year network contract, which slows down the upgrade cycle. I agree there’s no significant feature updates to drive upgrades, but I think the high cost is the biggest blocker.

(My iPhone 4S was less than half the cost of my 14PM. Granted the 14PM is significantly more powerful and has much greater storage, a better camera, etc, but that’s still a massive price jump at a time when money is getting very tight)

Apple plans to expand the Dynamic Island to all four iPhone 15 models launching later this year, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The hardware-dependant feature is currently limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said the iPhone 15 series will offer the same four screen sizes as the iPhone 14 series, meaning that customers can expect a 6.1-inch iPhone 15, 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus, 6.1-inch iPhone 15 Pro, and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Pro Max. Following in the footsteps of the Apple Watch Ultra, Gurman previously suggested that the iPhone 15 Pro Max might be named the iPhone 15 Ultra.

The Dynamic Island is a pill-shaped area at the top of the iPhone's display that replaces the notch found on previous models. Aided by software, the Dynamic Island morphs into different shapes and sizes for Live Activities, system alerts, and other information. Display analyst Ross Young previously claimed that the Dynamic Island would be available on all four iPhone 15 models, and this rumor is now backed by Gurman.

As widely expected, all four iPhone 15 models will be equipped with a USB-C port instead of Lightning, according to Gurman. USB-C is a more universally adopted charging standard and offers faster data transfer speeds than Lightning.

Gurman also corroborated rumors claiming that iPhone 15 Pro models will feature a titanium frame with haptic volume buttons. Instead of physically moving, two new Taptic Engines inside the device would simulate the feeling of the buttons being pressed, similar to how the iPhone SE's Home button and newer MacBook trackpads work.

Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 15 series in September as usual.

For those of you focusing on the weight difference a titanium frame would make, have you considered that if you lose 1 lb. of body weight your iPhone 15 will effectively weigh 16 ounces less?

The problem is those margins are getting extremely slim anyway because duh, duh, duuuuuuuuuh… people are keeping their iPhones longer. Major reason not enough significant feature changes to warrant upgrading even every few years. The new Dynamic Island feature for example could have at least been added to the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. There is nothing ‘Pro’ about that. Many of the 3 month later reviews are concluding it’s clever but not much of a big deal. Details are even unraveling regarding the A16 SoC using the same GPU cores as the A15.

It’s almost like the iPhone is starting to hit a brick wall. Sure, services like Emergency SOS are great benefits; how much is this moving the needle and why this couldn’t have been implemented as far back as iPhone 12.

The drip dropping of features on top of even realizations about the iPhone camera making photos look worse and actually not doing well in major a/b testing polls from MKBHD prove the iPhone is or has already lost its gold standard status.

What keeps me loyal is the stickiness of the ecosystem.

Cost to manufacture the 14 Pro Max is around $500 US. With the current price points they have some leeway.

The iPhone 15 Pro might be a big update. It might get the new mid-plate design that makes the phone more drop proof and repairable. The A17 processor might be a big update possibly adding realtime raytracing and a die shrink.

A/B testing usually selects for photos with unrealistic range or saturation for photos that pop more. I don't think that really represents the gold standard, just that Android phones tend to saturate photos. That is something you can always adjust on your photos afterwards if you prefer it. I doubt that affects sales since professional reviewers know better and don't count that as a negative. Actual photo quality across iPhone and flagship Android phones is generally pretty similar. Professional photographers generally prefer the iPhones signal processor choices, but photo quality has been mastered by the industry and is to the point where what is right is now very subjective since a image on a screen will never fully reflect how our eyes see the world. It depends on what compromises are chosen.

No one uses the port to transfer data tho so what’s the point
People shooting raw photos or ProRes video are using the port. It may be a niche use, but iPhones are increasingly becoming the tool of choice for professional video production. I'd actually like to see an SD card slot, but that might not be reasonable for a waterproof phone. Maybe there is a place for an iPad Mini Pro with cameras that are as good as the iPhone Pro and an SD card slot.

Most of the photo comparison tests I have seen are based on what the viewer sees on device or a compressed export.
RAW is a bit different. Problem is that the majority of what we see (excluding true RAW) is more computational than hardware related.

Pro models are bit havier than non-pro. Hopefully, replacing with titanium will help reduce weight.

If the regular iPhone models also get USB-C, Dynamic Island, and 48MP cameras, there's going to be even less to differentiate them from the Pro models, unless Apple puts some extra effort into handicapping their non-Pro phones. 🙃

USB-C at “Lightning” speed, 48 MP locked to binned 12 MP with no ability to use ProRAW

What’s really important to me is the finish, not the material. I hate the feel to the touch of the aluminum sides they use, but also dislike the fingerprints on the stainless steel sides of the iPhone X onwards. If they used the same finish of the SS of the iPhone 4 it’d be the sweet spot to me. No fingerprints, good grip, nice feel to the touch, looks great.
Also, bring back polished chamfered edges so you can have a matte phone that still has some of that cool shine that looks premium.

Can't wait to titanium. Much better than stainless steel in every single way.
These simplistic comments make no sense at all other than reflection of fanboyism.

How? Titanium is more prone to scratches than Stainless steel as its hardness is lower. Stainless steel has also more tensile strength.

Ti's elasticity is also more than stainless steel, would be more prone to bending.

Ti's performance is better in the same unit mass though, meaning if they keep the same volume of the raw material, Ti case would only then outperform ss.

20 million votes and counting is pretty much an admission that the iPhone doesn't have the best still photo camera. MKBHD still thinks the camera is great because it does great at video while also being a decent still photo camera and of course, it has the ecosystem stickiness.

The problem is that iPhone is split into so many options right now.

What throws off a lot of people is the new flagships are ridiculously expensive.
The actual present day successor to the iPhone (2007) model is iPhone SE3 which is 399.

You’ll get no argument from me about the product range. When Jobs came back from Next, he declared each market segment should have 2 products in it. iPad and iPhone have a stupid number. Personally, I think all iPhone needs is SE3, 14 and 14PM. Forget selling the 12 and 13.

For a man who is supposed to be about logistics, I don’t understand Cook’s approach. I’d want to minimise my product diversity to reduce the range I have to manufacture and then manage stock for. I never understood soldering RAM and storage onto Macs for the same reason, given it means you need to make every permutation of ram and storage combination (and CPU when still using intel).

i hope apple will not only enhance audio quality but also reduce latency. for the latter apple has to implement another transfer mode than bluetooth, that would be industry leading. Latency is important to “millions“ of users who make! music with macs and ipads and dont want or cant use wired headphones.
Anyone serious about making music isn't doing it wirelessly....

Do [lots of] people [still] actually consider the 13/14 Pro Max models 'heavy'? Unwieldy because of the size but heavy?

Anyone who's owned an older Plus model, like the 8 Plus, would feel that the dimensions are very similar for the length and width yet the weight difference is ~1.3 Ounces compared to the newer 13/14 Pro Max models.
Pro max is too heavy. Taking pics and texting one handed is a chore. I have a 13 Pro Max and will def get the 15 Pro instead.

There shouldn’t exist a Pro vs. standard model for this device. There’s no differentiation, and they’re manufacturing eWaste. Make one or two colors of two iPhones, and call it a day already.
