Just like that.

It's that easy.

And that's iOS 18.

Yes, we still have the same marketing people from 2005.

Hum… hum… icons normally show a color and a shape of a brand. Is Apple allowing users to destroy a brand?
Am I destroying Apple's brand by putting a case on my iPhone? It completely hides the Apple logo!

Oh, and I replaced the Google Chrome app icon with the Internet Explorer icon on my Mac. Hopefully the brand police won't find out.

I never understood why people wanted to be able to put blank spaces on their home screens. Wouldn't you want your home screen filled with apps so you don't have to scroll home screens as much?
When I delete an app, I don’t want the remaining apps to rearrange themselves to fill the hole, killing my muscle memory. Now I won't have to find a hole-filling replacement app/shortcut anymore each time.

Bloat means features that consume excess memory. Having icons covering a panel doesn’t consume barely more memory than having none.
on a comp sci level, I’ll gladly accept that definition of bloat—I’m talking about bloat from a UI/UX standpoint. I think it’s very telling that when we had the original, much smaller iPhone, there was exactly one (1) home screen with quite a large amount of blank space (before the App Store of course). sorry to harken back to him, though I imagine Steve knew in his vision that seeing a screen full of icons would be immediately overwhelming to some. this has changed as iPhones have become the de facto smartphone standard, though it would be a nice return to form—I’d previously said I would edit this to simply give another person credit for this idea, but they laid it out so well, I’m compelled to put the full quote:

Better that iOS and iPadOS adopted the icons from MacOS.

But it is wise of Apple to release a few simple functions at a time, so there is also some content for the next iOS. I only use the App Library, so custom colors of the apps are not relevant, but now you are in business (Apple) - can you give us the opportunity to customize the App Library, for example remove the latest folder (for those of us who do not downloads apps all the time), and let us move various apps into the desired categories ourselves.

(great ideas for App Library as well.) maybe I’m proselytizing over nothing here—as someone who very literally grew up with iPhones, I feel as though I have a decent clue of what the main demographic Apple is aiming for wants out of their device. this feels like a step forward, forgive me if my use of the term “bloat” was ill-placed (not in a tongue-in-cheek way, have to clarify with how MR is…).

Not the killer must-have feature if you ask me. You want to customize your home screen to organize your apps? Create folders and name them appropriately. With a little thought, you can probably get all your frequents on the home page.

Ok. Can we get multiple user profiles and the ability to sync apple watch with iPad. If they still want to ball and chain watch to iPhone, they could require iPhone for watch activation but still allow the watch app on iPad for syncing / managing watch once it's been activated on iPhone.

Which is useless. The passwords it generates are not accepted by 99% of websites.
I use randomized passwords from Safari/iCloud Keychain's password manager (in the four-four-four character an dash format) and only on rare occasion had an issue with websites not accepting them.

I’ve gotten rid of some apps and when I do I have to put something else in their place so others remain where they are. Muscle memory. Plus I want some apps on the bottom and to do that I have to fill the page.

Massive update. Change colors on icons. AI emojis. What else? Well, that alone is massive! We are living in the future!

Apple's iOS 18 update will introduce new features for further customizing the iPhone's home screen, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In the latest edition of his "Power On" newsletter, Gurman claimed that Apple will allow users to change the color of app icons in iOS 18. For example, "you can make all your social icons blue or finance-related ones green." This kind of home screen customization is currently only possible by creating single-action shortcuts with a custom icon that serve to launch an app.

Gurman also corroborated previous reports that iOS 18 will allow users to place apps anywhere on the home screen's grid. This will enable users to arrange icons more freely, similar to how widgets can currently be placed.

iOS 18 is expected to be previewed alongside Apple's other major software updates at WWDC in June, before officially releasing to the public in the fall.

But I like how every icon is green blue or orange and so generic you can’t tell them apart. it really makes me look twice and appreciate the outdated rounded squares and excess negative space between them.

Be nice to have customizable zoom view option. Not just on or off. Love the large icons but then messages looses the icon beside the messages. Should be able to do both, not require the pro max only feature.

Nope. I never fill a Home Screen. I choose backgrounds with a sky and landscape. I keep the bottom two rows open to see the landscape. With a billion users there will always be variations with how people use the software.
