Wait, why does AOD requires such advance hardware when pretty much any Android phone with an OLED screen has that feature for ages?
And don't tell me that the iPhone 12 and 13 won't get AOD because it requires the faster A16 neural engine...
It doesn’t, from a technical standpoint. Existing phones won’t get it because that would take away a reason for millions of current OLED iPhone owners to upgrade. Can’t have that…

Even in the Galaxy S7 days where there was no dynamic refresh rate and 14nm chips were the name of the game, the battery impact of AOD was <=1%/hr.

Gurman needs to speculate about a titanium chassis for 14 Pro Max.
Easy.

"I believe Apple will use titanium for their iPhone 14 Pro Max chassis. I think the next iPhone could have a better camera. I'm convinced M3 will be the successor to M2; M2 is currently on-track to be released in the Mac mini. I'm confident the Mac mini will remain mini" et al.

I feel like the iPhone 14 Pro is gonna be the iPhone X of 2022. The iPhone 16 is gonna be iPhone 11, but I will upgrade next year to the iPhone 15 because I don't think Apple is gonna support the X beyond 2023.

Absolutely no chance the 14 Pro will be under $1k with the 14 starting at $799 given the spec bump and inflation.

More like:

iPhone 14 = $799
iPhone 14 Max = $899
iPhone 14 Pro = $1099
iPhone 14 Pro Max = $1100

And that's being hopeful, wouldn't be surprised if all of them were $50-$100 higher. Just look at the new MacBook Air prices.
We need to circle back to these posts in September.

The ideas from watchOS are finally being used on iPhone. (Complications, AOD.)

That was all I thought about when watching keynote: watchOS on iOS.

I guess it’s nice to let people experience good interface ideas without owning an Apple Watch? 🤷‍♂️

Personally, I’d prefer the iPhone to go back to a LOT less Siri, and a lot more SIMPLICITY. the battery life was far better, and it didn’t require an overheating iPhone to run it.

I think:

iPhone 14 = $829 (you can’t forget the BS carrier penalty)
iPhone 14 Max = $929
iPhone 14 Pro = $1099
iPhone 14 Pro Max = $1199

The pro is going to look like an absolute steal against the 14 Max price. Even against the regular 14, why the heck would anyone NOT get a Pro at this point.

the Pros are the only good looking phones out of the bunch, too. The peasant phones are for carrier deals and people that don’t care about what their phones look like, slapping it in cases.

The mini is an anomaly, and it should have gotten a true Classic treatment with SS because no one but the small-phone-club (me!) wanted it.

I wish I could hear all the conversations from people in carrier stores: “that little thing? H*** no! Give me a real phone” 🤣

I’m almost certain my next phone will be a Pro. The mini is real nice, the cameras are great…

…but I want my Apple designed best again, and a telephoto lens.

Could be, not important either way.
Important to me… every single device in my house with the exception of our iPhones and my AirPods Pro are USB C… even my kids iPads are USB C. I would love to throw out lightning cables and be done with that annoyance. 14 being USB C would be an instant purchase of 2 phones for me and my wife….. Lightning and we skip

While always on display is nice I turned it off on my Apple Watch 7 and I finish my day with 20% or more battery life than when I have always on active.

So I finish around 52-56% with always on active and around 72-76% with it off. So yeah it does suck battery life

On the contrary, consumers will see the 14 Max as the largest iPhone for $300 less than the 14 Pro Max. I doubt people would be directly comparing the 14 Max with the 14 Pro as they have different screen size.

For us geeks, we might tabulate the price to the features we get, and thus make the conclusion that the Pro is a better deal. The lay consumers have a much more basic decision path, ie. how big is the screen for the dollar. And the 14 Max will also be battery life champion with the tried and tested A15 and 60Hz screen.

So Apple, again, managed to catch both customer segments. For the lay consumers, Apple will be able to charge them $100 with cost saving more by offering a larger screen and previous gen chip, while Apple manage to upsell people like you to pay even more money with dazzling specs and features with the Pro models.

Agree. Makes me sad that this gets me excited. Samsung started offering AODs on smartphones in 2016 (6 years ago!) and other manufacturers began slightly before then. Feels like an example of Apple holding back technology for higher margins and timing upgrade cycles so that they finally give users something they've salivated for years to have. They've created the need for the upgrade by holding it back.

Glad Apple is way ahead of the curve on computers - gives me the sense that they're not that greedy with upgrade cycles.

Apple got people through RAM and storage upgrades on the Macs. I expect even M3 Macs to still only have 8GB RAM and slow 256GB SSD as preconfigured model, while pricing will probably reach $1500 for the MacBook Air by that time.

So, Samsung introduced always on with the S7 in 2016 and six years later it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread on an iPhone? What about dynamic wallpapers other than bubbles - how many years without changes?

USB-C?? If not, why? Everything is USB-C nowadays.

And Apple, I don’t buy iPhones for the Lightning port. In fact, I won’t buy this iPhone BECAUSE of the Lightning port.

Titanium would bump the price up by at least $100.Brushed stainless steel would be better like they had on the iPhone 4/4S models.
iPhone 4/4s was bead-blasted stainless steel, no? Either way, I agree it’d likely hold up much better than the polished stainless steel on the flat sides of the iPhone 12 and 13.

"Like the Apple Watch, the iPhone 14 Pro will be able to show widgets displaying weather, calendars, stocks, activities and other data while the screen remains at a low brightness and frame rate,"

Does Gurman really not know that a OLED-display turns unused pixels off, not low brightness, they're just off. So yes the 'lit part' will be thin lines and low brightness, but 95+% of the screen will be off.

I'll still wait for the purchase until they finally run out of such ideas and they eventually remove the ugly notch from the display.

Too bad no usb c sadly
I’m agnostic about the charger. I don’t understand why people get so heated about it, to the point they beg regulators to get involved. It’s a plug. Socket, meet device. So you may have to carry an extra one… oh the humanity.

But seriously, I’d prefer a phone without a port. Gimme fast wireless charging and wireless data transfers.

Yup. Same.

I never used AOD on the Apple Watch, when you could simply just ‘tap’ the display or raise-to-wake. I wasn’t even concerned about image retention, it really was just about battery conservation, and I just don’t need to see my Apple Watch display all the time.

So even if Apple does include an ‘always on display’, that’s great. It’s not for me, and I would disable it, even though I do think it has its usefulness for those who do want it. So we have options.

Wholeheartedly they do on basic computer RAM and storage upgrades (although the Max Tech review showing resilient M1 processing under significant memory load shows that RAM might not be as pivotal as it is on Intel computers/those with horrible OS hand-off between SSD and RAM). I was more so thinking about how Apple wasn't terribly stingy on technology releases when they released M1 and additional M1 variants that are far superior to Intel - when Apple could have probably stuck to an A14X type of evolution and just barely exceeded Intel results. I guess chip competition is the only thing that drove Apple to outcompete on the computer side.

If that's the case, then it means that competition's implementation of AOD has been fairly weak (black screens with numbers without a "wow" factor). Until Samsung and others release features that actually get iOSers wowed, then Apple will continue to release features on their own delayed timeline.
